Total Workload as related to psychological well being and symptoms in full time employed female and male white collar workers

Thus, comparative knowledge concerning positive aspects of human functioning, such as health and well-being and how they relate to Total Workload of employed women and men, is limited. Our aim in this study was to investigate how Total Workload including paid and unpaid work is related to psychological well-being and symptoms in full-time employed women and men. We obtained data on Workload, general symptoms, and the Ryff scales covering self-acceptance, environmental mastery, positive relations, personal growth, purpose in life, and autonomy from questionnaires mailed to a stratified sample of highly educated white-collar workers aged between 32 and 58 years. Data from women (n =430) and men (n = 400) living in partner relationships with at least one child showed that increasing hours of unpaid work was associated with decreasing levels of self-acceptance and environmental mastery in women, whereas paid work was associated with increasing levels of personal growth and decreasing levels of purpose in life. For men, paid work was associated with increasing levels of personal growth and more symptoms. We discuss factors underlying the gender-specific relationships between paid and unpaid work, psychological well-being, and symptoms.

Total Workload work stress and perceived symptoms in swedish male and female white collar employees

Methods: A questionnaire was mailed to 1300 men and 1300 women belonging to the white-collar sector, with at least 35 hours of regular employment a week and a participant age of between 32 and 58 years. It contained items relating to Total Workload (hours spent on paid work, unpaid household tasks and childcare), subjective indices for work stress and symptoms. The response rate was 65% (743 women; 595 men). Gender difference in symptom prevalence was tested by analyses of variance. Odds ratios were used to estimate the bivariate associations between work-related variables and symptom prevalence. A multivariate analysis estimated the effect of paid and unpaid work interaction, work–childcare interplay and possible synergy. Results: The frequency and severity of symptoms was higher in women than in men (P , 0.0001). Employed women’s health was determined by the interaction between conditions at work and household duties (OR 2.09; 1.06–4.14), whereas men responded more selectively to long working hours, i.e. .50 h/week (OR 1.61; 1.02–2.54). However, childcare (,21 h/week) appeared to have a buffer effect on the risk of a high level of symptoms in men working long hours. Conclusion: Working life and private circumstances and the interplay between them need to be taken into account to curb stress-related ill health in both men and women.

Usually, theory assumes that, within each station, tasks can be executed in an arbitrary precedence-feasible sequence without changing station times. In practice, however, the task sequence may influence the station time considerably as sequence-dependent setups (e.g., walking distances, tool changes) have to be considered. Including this aspect leads to a joint balancing and scheduling problem, which we call SUALBSP (setup assembly line balancing and scheduling problem). In this paper, we modify the problem by modeling setups more realistically, give a new, more compact mathematical model formulation and develop effective heuristic solution procedures. Computational experiments based on existing and new data sets indicate that the new procedures outperform formerly proposed heuristics. They are able to solve problem instances of real-world size with small deviations from optimality in computation times short enough to be accepted in real-world decision support systems.

An ALBP consists of distributing the Total Workload for manufacturing any unit of the products to be assembled among the work stations along the line subject to a strict or average cycle time. Traditionally, stations are considered to be manned by one operator, respectively, or duplicated in form of identical parallel stations, each also manned by a single operator. In practice, this assumption is usually too restrictive. This is particularly true for large products like cars, trucks, busses and machines, which can be handled by several operators performing different tasks at the same time. Only restricted research has been done on such parallel workplaces within the same station though they have significant relevance in real-world assembly line settings. In this paper, we consider an extension of the basic ALBP to the case of flexible parallel workplaces (VWALBP) as they typically occur in the automobile and other industries assembling large products. The problem is defined and modelled as an integer linear program. As a solution approach a branch-and-bound procedure is proposed which also can be applied as a heuristic. Finally, computational experiments documenting the solution capabilities of the procedure are reported.

An ALBP consists of distributing the Total Workload for manufacturing any unit of the products to be assembled among the work stations along the line. The sequence-dependent assembly line balancing problem (SDALBP) is an extension of the standard simple assembly line balancing problem (SALBP) which has significant relevance in real-world assembly line settings. SDALBP extends the basic problem by considering sequence-dependent task times. In this paper, we define this new problem, formulate several versions of a mixed-integer program, adapt solution approaches for SALBP to SDALBP, generate test data and perform some preliminary computational experiments. As a main result, we find that applying SALBP-based search procedures is very effective, whereas modelling and solving the problem with MIP standard software is not recommendable.

Since the early times of Henry Ford several developments took place which changed assembly lines from strictly paced and straight single-model lines to more flexible systems including, among others, lines with parallel work stations or tasks, customer-oriented mixed-model and multi-model lines, U-shaped lines as well as unpaced lines with intermediate buffers. In any case, an important decision problem, called assembly line balancing problem, arises and has to be solved when (re-) configuring an assembly line. It consists of distributing the Total Workload for manufacturing any unit of the product to be assembled among the work stations along the line. Assembly line balancing research has traditionally focused on the simple assembly line balancing problem (SALBP) which has some restricting assumptions. Recently, a lot of research work has been done in order to describe and solve more realistic generalized problems (GALBP). In this paper, we survey the developments in GALBP research.
