This article describes Minerva’s major software components, and provides a comparative analysis of the results obtained in the Smithsonian museum. During two weeks of highly successful operation, the robot interacted with thousands of people, both in the museum and through the Web, traversing more than 44km at speeds of up to 163 cm/sec in the unmodie d museum.

It presents a modular and distributed software architecture, which integrates localization, mapping, collision avoidance, planning, and various modules concerned with user interaction and Web-based telepresence. At its heart, the software approach relies on probabilistic computation, on-line learning, and any-time algorithms. It enables robots to operate safely, reliably, and at high speeds in highly dynamic environments, and does not require any modifications of the environment to aid the robot’s operation. Special emphasis is placed on the design of interactive capabilities that appeal to people’s intuition. The interface provides new means for human-robot interaction with crowds of people in public places, and it also provides people all around the world with the ability to establish a “virtual telepresence” using the Web. To illustrate our approach, results are reported obtained in mid-1997, when our robot “RHINO” was deployed for a period of six days in a densely populated museum. The empirical results demonstrate reliable operation in public environments. The robot successfully raised the museum’s attendance by more than 50%. In addition, thousands of people all over the world controlled the robot through the Web. We conjecture that these innovations transcend to a much larger range of application domains for service robots. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Such patterns of interactions are found when service robots operate in public places, for example information kiosks, receptionists, and Tour-Guide robots applications. We describe our approach to spontaneous short-term interaction: a robot designed to be a believable social agent. The approach has been implemented using a mobile robot with a motorized face as focal point for interaction, an architecture that suggests the robot has moods, and a method for learning how to interact with people. Our system was recently deployed at a Smithsonian museum in Washington, DC. During a two week period it interacted with thousands of people. The robot's interactive capabilities were essential for its high on-task performance, and thus its practical success.

We consider a sensing field mixed with multiple independent Tourist groups, each with a leader and several members. Members of a group will follow the moving path of their leader, but may occasionally roam around randomly on their own interests. Sensor nodes have to track leaders' locations and maintain guiding paths from members to leaders. A member may inquire where his/her leader is, and a leader may "recall" his/her members. We propose a feasible solution to such an application by using existing technologies and off-the-shelf components. A group guiding protocol is presented. The design enables reliable group guiding at low cost and low traffic load. Our prototyping system is reported and system performance is discussed.

It consists of three main components: Art Recommender, Tour Wizard, and Mobile Tour Guide. Based on the semantically enriched Rijksmuseum Amsterdam collection, we show how Semantic Web technologies can be deployed to (partially) solve three important challenges for recommender systems applied in an open Web context: (1) to deal with the complexity of various types of relationships for recommendation inferencing, where we take a content-based approach to recommend both artworks and art-history topics; (2) to cope with the typical user modeling problems, such as cold-start for first-time users, sparsity in terms of user ratings, and the efficiency of user feedback collection; and (3) to support the presentation of recommendations by combining different views like a historical timeline, museum map and faceted browser. Following a user-centered design cycle, we have performed two evaluations with users to test the effectiveness of the recommendation strategy and to compare the different ways for building an optimal user profile for efficient recommendations. The CHIP demonstrator received the Semantic Web Challenge Award (third prize) in 2007, Busan, Korea.

This robot was recently deployed in the "Deutsches Museum Bonn," were it Guided hundreds of visitors through the museum during a six-day deployment period. The robot's control software integrates low-level probabilistic reasoning with high-level problem solving embedded in first order logic. A collection of software innovations, described in this paper, enabled the robot to navigate at high speeds through dense crowds, while reliably avoiding collisions with obstacles--some of which could not even be perceived. Also described in this paper is a user interface tailored towards non-expert users, which was essential for the robot's success in the museum. Based on these experiences, this paper argues that time is ripe for the development of AI-based commercial service robots that assist people in everyday life.

As ‘experience’ has come to be considered central to Tourism, research on the Guide as communicator and experience-broker has expanded. Guides broker experience in at least four domains – physical access, understanding, encounters and empathy. This conceptual paper examines, via the literature particularly on the mediatory and brokering roles of the Tour Guide and its intersections with social, economic and political trends, how and why the Guide's role is changing. Together these bodies of literature on guiding and on societal trends are used to underpin a typology of future Guided Tour experiences distinguished by the target market, style of guiding and use of communication, with varying outcomes for the Tourist. Enhancing the visitor experience: Reconceptualising the Tour Guide's communicative role
Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management, 2014Co-Authors: Betty Weiler, Kaye WalkerAbstract:This paper reviews and synthesises research findings to date on (1) the role of the Tour Guide as experience broker, (2) the relevance and efficacy of Guide communication, and in particular the application of nature and heritage interpretation principles to enhance the Guided Tour experience, and (3) visitor demands and expectations of a Tour Guide's communication. These collectively provide a basis for deepening and reconceptualising the communicative role of the Guide beyond a one-way commentator to that of an experience broker. With this as a foundation, the authors report on how the content of one Tour Guide training program, the Tonga Whale Guide Training Program (TWGTP), was selected, developed and delivered in a specific developing country context. Based on pre-post differences reported by training participants, the training was successful in impacting the Guides' self-reported capacity to broker physical access, encounters, understanding and empathy of their Tour groups. The training also improved Guides' understanding of and capacity to apply the principles of interpretation to their Tours. Perhaps most importantly, participants shifted the importance they placed on enhancing the Tourist experience and their capacity to do so. This case study demonstrates that, when informed by theory and research, training can successfully equip Guides to engage visitors, impact their understanding and empathy, and enrich their experience.

Tour Guide training a model for sustainable capacity building in developing countries

It goes on to examine the interpretive guiding component of a six-week training programme delivered in April and May, 1999 in Panama, together with two shorter, more focused interpretive guiding courses, one in Patagonia, Argentina (March 2000) and one in Galapagos Islands, Ecuador (September 2000). The context and process for the development of these courses and the rationale for the selection and development of course content and methods are presented, followed by a description of a multi-level evaluation of the training, including the addition of a training-of-trainers component. These provide the basis for a model approach with recommendations for the design, delivery and evaluation of future interpretive Guide training in developing countries.
