    Abstract:

    : The first reports of methylmercury Intoxication appeared in 1865 and 1866. These reports had sensational effects in European countries, and were introduced not only in journals but also in newspapers. These two reports were referable in Japan at the latest in 1927. The formation of organic mercury in the production of acetoaldehyde was also referable in 1906 in Japan. In 1931 (one year before the start of acetoaldehyde production in Minamata) these important reports cited above were referable in Kumamoto University, and there were warnings about the Toxicity of organic mercury and environmental pollution prior to the start of acetoaldehyde production. However, not only the plant, authorities (Ministry of Welfare), and Kumamoto Prefectural Office, but also the scientists completely ignored these reports. Waste was dumped into the environment without any treatment. Serious pollution of the environment by organic mercury started, which resulted in the outbreak of Minamata disease (=methylmercury Intoxication).

    This issue of Medical Humanities signals a turning point for an area of scholarship that is made up of several ‘contested and fragmented fields’ (p. 17)1 and has been criticised for lacking a central theory, method or politics. At first glance, there may seem to be little in common between recognisable ‘medical humanities’ scholarship—typically engaging with illness experiences, patient–clinician encounters and the history of medical institutions—and Mel Chen's startlingly wide-ranging meditation on instances and tropes of Toxicity and Intoxication. What could the medical humanities possibly have to say about subprime mortgages in the global financial crisis? But Chen's immensely provocative article, ‘Unpacking Intoxication, Racialising Disability’,2 offers an expanded vision of what a critical version of the medical humanities might concern itself with, and in doing so suggests theoretical, methodological and political directions in which the field might move. In particular, Chen's work invites medical humanities scholarship that offers systemic critique of how global capital affects human bodies and takes a politicised approach to oppressive regimes that pose threats to the health of populations and regulate what we understand ‘health’ to be.     Background Exceeding nationally recommended drinking limits puts individuals at increased risk of experiencing harmful effects due to alcohol consumption. Both weekly and daily limits exist to prevent harm due to Toxicity and Intoxication, respectively. It remains unclear how well college students adhere to recommended limits, and whether their drinking is sensitive to the wider sex difference in weekly versus daily drinking limits. Methods This study used a daily-level, academic-year-long, multisite sample to describe adherence to NIAAA daily (no more than 4 drinks per day for men, 3 drinks per day for women) and weekly (no more than 14 drinks per week for men, 7 drinks per week for women) drinking guidelines, and to test for sex differences and time effects. College students (n = 992; 58% female) reported daily drinking on a biweekly basis using web-based surveys throughout their first year of college. Results Women exceeded weekly limits more frequently (15% of weeks [14 to 17%]) than men (12% [10 to 14%]). Women and men exceeded daily drinking limits similarly often (25 and 27%, respectively). In a generalized estimating equations analysis across all 18 biweekly assessments, adjusted for covariates and a linear trend over time, women were more likely to exceed weekly guidelines compared to men. Sex differences in exceeding daily limits were not significant. Over time, rates of exceeding limits declined for daily limits but only for men for weekly limits. Conclusions Female college students are more likely to exceed weekly alcohol intake limits than men. Furthermore, trends over time suggest that college students may be maturing out of heavy episodic drinking, but women may not mature out of harmful levels of weekly drinking. The observed disparity in risk for long-term health consequences may represent a missed opportunity for education and intervention.

  • Mercury Toxicity: Genetic susceptibility and synergistic effects

    Mercury Toxicity and Intoxication (poisoning) are realities that every American needs to face. Both the Environmental Protection Agency and National Academy of Science state that between 8 to 10% of American women have mercury levels that would render any child they gave birth to neurological disorders. One of six children in the USA have a neurodevelopmental disorder according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Yet our dentistry and medicine continue to expose all patients to mercury. This article discusses the obvious sources of mercury exposures that can be easily prevented. It also points out that genetic susceptibility and exposures to other materials that synergistically enhance mercury and ethylmercury Toxicity need to be evaluated, and that by their existence prevent the actual determination of a “safe level” of mercury exposure for all. The mercury sources we consider are from dentistry and from drugs, mainly vaccines, that, in today’s world are not only unnecessary sources, but also sources that are being increasingly recognized as being significantly deleterious to the health of many. © Copyright 2005, Pearblossom Private School, Inc.–Publishing Division.
