  • optimization simulation based framework for the evaluation of Supply chain management policies in the forest product industry
    Systems Man and Cybernetics, 2012
Co-Authors: Wassim Jerbi, Jonathan Gaudreault, Sophie Damours, Mustapha Nourelfath, Sebastien Lemieux, Philippe Marier, Mathieu Bouchard
    Abstract:

This work describes a framework for the elaboration and evaluation of management policies for production and Transportation Supply chains in the forest product industry. The approach deals with the issue of coordination between the tactical and operational decision levels. First, we introduce LogiLab, a software system allowing to model the network and to optimize product flows in the Supply chain. We than show how one can use this tactical aggregated plan to identify management policies that will guide day to day operations at the operational level. Finally, a discrete event simulation model allows assessing with more details what would be the impact of implementing these policies at the operational/execution level.

  • Decision Support Tool for Motorways of the Sea Intermodal Corridor
    Transportation Research Record, 2013
Co-Authors: Dimitrios A Tsamboulas, Panayota Moraiti
    Abstract:

Motorways of the sea, or marine highways, is a relatively new concept that is intended to shift freight traffic from the road network to more sustainable maritime links through the establishment of frequent, high-quality sea-based intermodal Transportation Supply chains. As with any other concept of this magnitude, the realization faces a series of challenges in technical and organizational barriers, market and policy framework support, and socioeconomic acceptance. A decision support tool was proposed for assessing whether a particular Transportation Supply chain connecting two ports located in different countries could successfully evolve into a motorway of the sea, that is, an intermodal corridor. Three proposed components addressed the three agents whose involvement was essential for implementation: shippers and forwarders, maritime operators, and port and other national infrastructure authorities. These key components were (a) an estimation of the minimum threshold of traffic volumes for use of a spe...

  • IMPACTS OF TELECOMMUTING ON VEHICLE-MILES TRAVELED : A NATIONWIDE TIME SERIES ANALYSIS
    2020
Co-Authors: Sangho Choo, Patricia L. Mokhtarian, Ilan Salomon
    Abstract:

This report presents an aggregate study of the impact of teleworking on Transportation. In the study, the authors use a multi-variate time series analysis of aggregate nationwide data spanning 1966-1999 for all variables except telecommuting, and 1988-1998 for telecommuting. Three dependent variables are modeled, in direct and per-capita forms: ground vehicles miles traveled (VMT), airline passenger miles traveled (PMT), and the sum of those two variable. The report describes the Box-Jenkins Methodology for Time Series Analysis that was used. The study relied on secondary data sources and addressed some of the key issues, such as definition, quality, and quantity, associated with measuring telecommuting. The analysis was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, each dependent variable was modeled as a function of conventional variables representing economic activity, the cost of Transportation, Transportation Supply, and demographics. In the second stage, the residuals of the first stage (1988-1998) were modeled as a function of the number of telecommuters. The authors assess the change in annual VMT per telecommuter and discuss the modeling results.

  • does telecommuting reduce vehicle miles traveled an aggregate time series analysis for the u s
    2005
Co-Authors: Sangho Choo, Patricia L. Mokhtarian, Ilan Salomon
    Abstract:

This study examines the impact of telecommuting on passenger vehicle- miles traveled (VMT) through a multivariate time series analysis of aggregate nationwide data spanning 1966-1999 for all variables except telecommuting, and 1988-1998 for telecommuting. The analysis was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, VMT (1966-1999) was modeled as a function of conventional variables representing economic activity, Transportation price, Transportation Supply and socio-demographics. In the second stage, the residuals of the first stage (1988-1998) were modeled as a function of the number of telecommuters. We also assessed the change in annual VMT per telecommuter as well as VMT per telecommuting occasion, for 1998. The models suggest that telecommuting reduces VMT, with 94% confidence. Together with independent external evidence, the results suggest a reduction in annual VMT on the order of 0.8% or less. Even with impacts that small, when informally compared to similar reductions in VMT due to public transit ridership, telecommuting appears to be far more cost-effective in terms of public sector expenditures.

  • Impacts of Home-Based Telecommuting on Vehicle-Miles Traveled: A Nationwide Time Series Analysis
    2002
Co-Authors: Sangho Choo, Patricia L. Mokhtarian, Ilan Salomon
    Abstract:

This study estimates the impact of telecommuting on personal Transportation using a multi-variate time series analysis of aggregate nationwide data spanning 1966-1999 for all variables except telecommuting, and 1988-1998 for telecommuting. Three dependent variables were modeled, in direct and per-capita forms: ground vehicle miles traveled (VMT), airline passenger miles traveled (PMT), and the sum of those two variable, loosely referred to as total miles traveled. The first part of the analysis modeled each dependent variable (1966-1999) as a function of conventional variables representing economic activity, the cost of Transportation Transportation Supply, and demographics. In the second part of the study, the residuals of the first part (1988-1998) were modeled as a function of the number of telecommuters. Secondary data sources were used for the study. After the modeling results are presented, the study offers several public policy recommendations, based on the conclusion that telecommuting appears to have a statistically significant, albeit modes in magnitude, effect on reducing travel.
