Welded joints with non-matching weld metal-crack driving force considerations on the basis of the Engineering Treatment Model (ETM)
International Journal of Fracture, 1993Co-Authors: Karl Heinz SchwalbeAbstract:The application of the Engineering Treatment Model (ETM) to a weld metal crack in a tension loaded, transverse welded wide plate yields the applied crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) as a function of applied load or applied strain, if the stress-strain-curves of the base material and the weld metal can be expressed as piece-wise power laws. Simple analytical relationships are obtained which can serve for predicting critical loads, critical strains, or critical crack length. Large effects on the applied CTOD can occur if the weld metal's stress-strain-curve deviates from that of the base material.

Estimating the load line displacement of cracked laboratory specimens using the engineering Treatment Model (ETM)

Under contained yielding conditions the Model uses available linear elastic solutions with an Irwin-type plasticity correction of the crack length. The magnification factor (F F y ) 1 n describing the material's strain hardening behaviour is applied for extrapolation into the regime of net section yielding. Comparison of ETM estimates with finite element and experimental results shows that the assumptions of the Model are realistic.

Effect of weld metal mis-match on toughness requirements: Some simple analytical considerations using the Engineering Treatment Model (ETM)
International Journal of Fracture, 1992Co-Authors: Karl Heinz SchwalbeAbstract:The recently introduced Engineering Treatment Model (ETM) relates the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) to the applied load or strain for work hardening materials. The formalisms of ETM were applied to a transverse welded wide plate with a crack in the weld metal. Both the base material and the weld metal were regarded as power law hardening materials. It can be shown that differences in the plastic properties of the weld metal and base material, respectively, significantly affect the CTOD. Quantitative relations are given for the CTOD of a crack in the weld metal normalised by the CTOD a crack in the base material would exhibit. An important result is that the characterisation of a non-matching weld metal by the matching factor M only is not sufficient since work hardening plays an important role. From this, requirements for minimum weld metal toughness can be established in order to make the toughness performance of the weldment no worse than that of the base material.

Journal of Psychotherapy Integration, 2013Co-Authors: Rachel E Goldman, Mark J Hilsenroth, Jesse Owen, Jerold R GoldAbstract:This study examined the relationship between Psychodynamic-Interpersonal (PI) and Cognitive-Behavioral (CB) techniques used in a Short-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy with the therapeutic alliance early in Treatment. Ninety-one outpatient participants rated their alliances, and independent videotape ratings of technique were made. Our findings did not support the primary hypothesis of a relationship between technique integration and overall patient-rated alliance. However, our findings did demonstrate a significant association between the integration of PI and CB techniques with the two alliance subscales Goals & Task Agreement and Confident Collaboration. In addition, specific PI and CB techniques were significantly correlated with higher patient alliance scores on these two subscales. Psychodynamic therapists who are more collaborative in identifying specific goals and explicitly defining the focus of the Treatment with their patients, as well as providing a clear rationale for their Model, may facilitate a stronger therapeutic alliance specific to patient confidence in, and agreement with, the Treatment process.

Impact of the tumor microenvironment on host infiltrating cells and the efficacy of flt3-ligand combination immunotherapy evaluated in a Treatment Model of mouse prostate cancer

SomersAbstract:We have previously reported that Fms-like tyrosine kinase-3 ligand (flt3-L) induced tumor stabilization and regression of palpable ectopic prostate tumors (TRAMP-C1). Although some mice remained "tumor free" for several months following termination of therapy, tumors invariably reappeared and grew progressively in all animals. The lack of a curative response suggests that TRAMP-C1 tumors may inhibit the development of a flt3-L-induced anti-tumor immune response. Consistent with this view, we demonstrate herein that TRAMP-C1 tumors isolated from flt3-L treated animals contained a marked dendritic cell (DC) infiltrate that was temporally correlated with tumor regression. However, tumor-associated DCs, especially in a flt3-L setting, progressively lost MHC class II antigen expression during tumor growth. Treatment with the DC maturation factor trimeric CD40 ligand (CD40-L) either alone or in combination with fl3-L neither prevented loss of DC class II antigens nor disease relapse. Because loss of class II antigens would prevent CD4+ helper T (Th) cell development, we treated tumor-bearing mice with agonistic anti-4-1BB antibody (Ab), which can promote cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) development independent of Th cell function. However, anti-4-1BB Ab alone did not alter TRAMP-C1 growth kinetics, and, when used in combination, was no more effective than flt3-L alone. The inability of the 4-1BB co-stimulatory signal to promote tumor regression may have been related to two additional features of TRAMP-C1 tumors. First, tumor-associated T cells, but not splenic T cells from tumor-bearing animals, were profoundly deficient in expression of CD3-epsilon (CD3ε) and T cell receptor-beta chain (TCRβ). Second, CTLs required 24 h to efficiently kill TRAMP-C1 target cells even after up-regulation of MHC class I antigens by interferon-γ. This rate of tumor cell destruction by CTLs may not be sufficient to prevent tumor progression. Taken together, these data reveal several important immunosuppressive characteristics of the prostate tumor microenvironment (TME) that immunotherapeutic interventions must first overcome to achieve long-term cures. These data also highlight the importance of utilizing Treatment versus vaccination Models in the evaluation of immunotherapeutic modalities.

A New Paradigm of Cardiovascular Risk Factor Modification

While multiple studies have demonstrated that modification of atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) significantly reduces morbidity and mortality rates, clinical control of CVDs and CVRFs remains poor. By 2010, the American Heart Association seeks to reduce coronary heart disease, stroke, and risk by 25%. To meet this goal, clinical practitioners must establish new Treatment paradigms for CVDs and CVRFs. This paper discusses one such Treatment Model--a comprehensive atherosclerosis program run by physician extenders (under physician supervision), which incorporates evidence-based CVD and CVRF interventions to achieve Treatment goals.
