State-of-the-art of polymer Tribology

A broad overview of the general area of polymer Tribology is presented in this paper. The progress in understanding the field over the past decade is reviewed under the three topics of rubber Tribology, plastic Tribology and Tribology of polymer composites. It is hoped that this paper will serve as a valuable source of reference for future tribologists.

Three Axioms in Tribology
Tribology, 2000Co-Authors: Youbai XieAbstract:The importance,undesired situation of development of Tribology and the reasons are described. Problems come from insufficient study on the theory system and method system in Tribology, which can match the definition and nature of Tribology and can support an independent development of Tribology. Since 1966 the methodology of investigating Tribology has not been improved from that for investigating friction, wear and lubrication of a single tribo pair. It is found that there are three axioms in Tribology. They are discussed in detail in connection with examples. Namely,axiom I:the tribological behavior is system dependent that single surfaces or medium substance cannot realize any tribological behavior;axiom II:The property of tribo elements and the systems with tribo elements are time dependent;axiom III: Tribological behaviors are the results of strong coupling of many behaviors of other disciplines, such as mechanics, chemistry, heat transfer, material science, electronics and theory of control. Tribology is the science, which provides theories and technology to describe and control the pattern of coupling between behaviors under tribological condition. No other discipline can meet such a need. A series of theories and lemmas has been deduced from the axioms. It has also been suggested that the state equations and output equations, which are familiar in control engineering can be used to describe the property of a tribo system. It is expected that the axioms,theories, lemmas, concepts and methods given could be used as guidance in establishing the theory system and method system of Tribology.

On the Tribology design
Tribology International, 1999Co-Authors: Youbai XieAbstract:Abstract Tribology design is discussed in a general sense to utilize new possibilities provided by the development of systems engineering of tribo-systems. The contents, target and characteristics of Tribology design are discussed. It is emphasized that the Tribology design cannot be understood only as the design of tribo-pairs, but also as friction plus wear plus lubrication. Results in the design of rotor-bearing–sealing-gear systems, thrust-bearing systems, piston-rings–cylinder liner systems, active magnetic bearings and a smart tribo-material (or structure) in China are introduced. A Tribology Design Division and a division for building a China Tribology Database have been established in the Tribology Institution, CMES. The National Natural Science Foundation of China provides strong financial support in such activities.

The Science Citation Index – Expanded (SCI-E) is used as data source. The study focuses on frequently cited most important papers published after 1966. The result suggests that important papers for the development of Tribology research have been published only after the introduction of the term “Tribology” in 1966.

The study is based on cited references (n = 577,472) in Tribology research publications (n = 24,086). The Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-E) is used as data source. The results show that RPYS has the potential to identify the important publications: Most of the publications which have been identified in this study as highly cited (referenced) publications are landmark publications in the field of Tribology.

The study provides insights into citation relations among Tribology publications. It demonstrates the potential of the CitNetExplorer and suggests possible improvements. It also shows how the CitNetExplorer can be used to analyze networks of publications in a specific research field.

Oral Tribology: Bridging the gap between physical measurements and sensory experience
Current opinion in food science, 2016Co-Authors: Clementine Pradal, Jason R StokesAbstract:Soft-Tribology is emerging as an important field of research for quantifying the physics occurring during oral tribological processes. In a food oral processing context, recent research indicates that Tribology measurements are providing insights into several texture-related sensory percepts, but obtaining quantitative empirical relationships between the two is challenging. Choosing a physiologically relevant tribological ‘system’ is paramount to the successful application of Tribology as an indicator for texture perception; the choice of instrument, surfaces and model food system, as well as the role of saliva, should be carefully considered. Tribology and sensory perception are affected by multiple physico-chemical properties, and therefore integrative approaches that combine Tribology with other characterisation techniques are necessary for mechanistic understanding on their inter-relationship.
