  • efficacy of Trichogramma evanescens and bacillus thuringiensis var kurstaki in control of cydia pomonella l in turkey
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry, 2017
Co-Authors: Sevcan Oztemiz, Ali Kuden, Isilay Lavkor
    Abstract:

This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Trichogramma evanescens Westwood (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) release with as well as without Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Berliner) in biological control of Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in the Galaxy Gala apple variety grafted onto M9 rootstock in 2016. Four treatments were analyzed: releasing T. evanescens alone (TE), applying B. thuringiensis var. kurstaki (BT) alone, applying both (TE + BT), and a control (C) without any application at all. The experiment design entailed randomized blocks with four replicates. In each generation of the egg stage, 100,000 parasitoids per hectare were released twice (1440 parasitoids/plot), with an interval of 7-10 days. In the larval stage, BT was applied twice for the first generation and once for the second. Weekly counts were performed regularly. The decrease in egg count was 52.15% in TE, 58.99% in BT, and 65.46% in TE + BT plots. The decrease observed in larval numbers was 68%, 73.33%, and 94.66%, respectively. Egg parasitization rates varied between 58.64% and 69.79%. At harvest, fruit infestation rates were 9.66% and 8.33% in TE and BT plots and just 2.0% in the TE + BT plot, versus 34% in the control plot. Promising results were achieved in biological control of C. pomonella when TE was combined with BT. The combined treatment of both biological control agents significantly decreased the population of the pests and crop damage. The natural enemy alone was not effective in keeping the population below the economic threshold level.

Bu amacla, T. evanescens’in yasinin omur boyunca parazitledigi E. kuehniella yumurta sayisi, parazitleme orani, ergin cikisi ve disi oranina etkisi belirlenmis, ayrica konukcu yumurta yasinin T.evanescens’in parazitleme kapasitesine etkisi arastirilmistir. Deneme, 26±1 oC sicaklik, % 65±10 oransal nem, 16 saat aydinlik, 8 saat karanlik uzun gun aydinlatmali iklim odasinda yurutulmustur. T. evanescens disileri bir gunluk yumurtalari en fazla oranda tercih etmislerdir. E. kuehniella yumurta yasi ilerledikce T. evanescens disisi tarafindan parazitlenen yumurta sayisi azalmistir. T. evanescens’in omru boyunca parazitledigi Ephestia kuehniella yumurtalarinin %75’ini birinci gun parazitledigi ortaya cikmistir. In this study we have tested parasitization performance of Trichogramma evanescens Westwood (Lepidoptera: Trichogrammatidae) in biological control of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The effects of parasitoid age on parasitization performance of T. evanescens during lifespan, parasitism rate, sex ratio and emergence were studied. We also evaluated the host age on parasitism capacity of T. evanescens. Experiment was carried out in climatic room at 26±1 oC temperature, 65±10 % humidity, 16 hours light, 8 hours dark regime. The most prefered host eggs were the youngest (one day-old) and the number of parasitized egg decreased with increasing host age. In the first day of total lifespan, 75 % of E. kuehniella eggs were parasitized by T. evanescens. Most of the parasitizations were performed by T. evanescens during the first day of parasitism, and 75% of the E. kuehniella eggs were parasitized at this day. This rate decreased below 50% at six day, and 34.4 % at eight day. The emergence rate of parasitoid adults was 95.06 %, Female biassed sex ratio was observed and the percentage of female was 83.77. It was determined that the parasitism capacity of T. evanescens was high and caused significant decrease in the E. kuehniella population. It was concluded that this parasitoid can be able to use in biological control of stored product moths, especially E. kuehniella in flour mi

In this study the the effects of gamma radiation on eggs, pupae and adult stages of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma evanescens were investigated. When the eggs were irradiated with the doses between 0-20 Gy, pupation, parasitization and percentage of female decreased depending on the increasing doses. The parasitization of the adults developed from irradiated eggs at 5 Gy was not changed when compared control. The 1-day old pupae of the parasitoid was not affected by gamma radiation with respect to adult emergence, parasitization rate and F1 emergence up to 10 Gy. While adult emergence from irradiated 6-day old pupae was not affected up to the 20 Gy dose parasitization performances of these adults decreased depending on the increasing doses. The F1 generation developed from irradiated 6-day old pupae showed similar parasitization performance when compared with control at all doses. • effects of bacillus thuringiensis subsp kurstaki hd1 spore crystal mixture on the adults of egg parasitoid Trichogramma evanescens hymenoptera Trichogrammatidae
    Biotechnology & Biotechnological Equipment, 2015
Co-Authors: Ugur Azizoglu, Semih Yilmaz, Abdurrahman Ayvaz, Salih Karaborklu
    Abstract:

In the present study, the potential hazard of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) kurstaki HD1 spore-crystal mixture (spore/δ-endotoxin) on parasitization performance and longevity of female egg parasitoid Trichogramma evanescens Westwood was evaluated. For this purpose, Bt kurstaki HD1 was incubated at 30 °C in T3 medium at 200 rpm for seven days. Lyophilized spore-crystal mixture (5000 µg mL−1) was mixed with 50% honey solution and supplied to 0–24 h old T. evanescens adults as a nutrient to ensure the ingestion of the toxins by the parasitoids. The results indicated that spore-crystal mixture of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (Btk) HD1 did not induce considerable decrease in parasitization performance and longevity of T. evanescens adults. Thus, it can be concluded that Btk HD1 products can safely be used together with egg parasitoid T. evanescens in integrated pest management system to compensate the deficiency of each control tactic alone.

When the adult parasitoids irradiated with the doses between 0-80 Gy parasitization, adult emergence and parasitization performance of the F1 adults decreased with increasing doses. Gamma radiation caused reduction in the longevity even at the low doses.

  • novel type of sub retinal pigment shield in the miniaturized compound eye of Trichogramma evanescens
The Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2020
Co-Authors: Tobias Mohr, Ian A Meinertzhagen, Stefan Fischer
    Abstract:

Pigment granules, found in different cell types of the retina in insect compound eyes, fulfill important functions. They isolate the individual ommatidia from stray light, regulate the angular sensitivity, and restrict the light that reaches the photoreceptor according to ambient light intensities. Descriptions of pigment cells within the retina are included in ultrastructural eye descriptions, but knowledge of pigment cell types beneath the retina and basal matrix (BM) are relatively limited in insects. In the miniaturized parasitoid wasp Trichogramma evanescens Westwood 1833, a sub-retinal pigment shield is formed by pigment-bearing cells, which appear in two-dimensional TEM sections to form a separate population beneath the BM. By using three-dimensional reconstructions of serial-section transmission electron microscopy, it was possible to reveal that the sub-retinal pigment shield of T. evanescens is not formed by a separate cell type, but by extensions of the lateral rim pigment cells that penetrate gaps in the BM. The reconstruction is supported by evidence from a statistical analysis of pigment granule volumes of all pigment bearing cell types in the retina and rim region. The study reveals the first known case of the participation of lateral rim cells in a sub-retinal pigment shield in an insect eye. As neither pigmented extensions of secondary pigment cells, nor pigment granules in the extensions of the cone cell projections are present above the BM in T. evanescens, the sub-retinal extensions of the lateral rim cells can be seen as a functional adaptation to miniaturization in order to maintain a proximal shielding function.

  • how small can small be the compound eye of the parasitoid wasp Trichogramma evanescens westwood 1833 hymenoptera hexapoda an insect of 0 3 to 0 4 mm total body size
    Visual Neuroscience, 2011
Co-Authors: Stefan Fischer, Carsten Muller, Benno V Meyerrochow
    Abstract:

: With a body length of only 0.3-0.4 mm, the parasitoid wasp Trichogramma evanescens (Westwood) is one of the smallest insects known. Yet, despite its diminutive size, it possesses compound eyes that are of oval shapes, measuring across their long axes in dorsoventral direction 63.39 and 71.11 μm in males and females, respectively. The corresponding facet diameters are 5.90 μm for males and 6.39 μm for females. Owing to the small radii of curvature of the eyes in males (34.59 μm) and females (42.82 μm), individual ommatidia are short with respective lengths of 24.29 and 34.97 μm. The eyes are of the apposition kind, and each ommatidium possesses four cone cells of the eucone type and a centrally fused rhabdom, which throughout its length is formed by no more than eight retinula cells. A ninth cell occupies the place of the eighth retinula cell in the distal third of the rhabdom. The cone is shielded by two primary and six secondary pigment cells, all with no apparent extensions to the basement membrane, unlike the case in larger hymenopterans. The regular and dense packing of the rhabdoms reflects an effective use of space. Calculations on the optics of the eyes of Trichogramma suggest that the eyes need not be diffraction limited, provided they use mostly shorter wavelengths, that is, UV light. Publications on the visual behavior of these wasps confirm Trichogramma's sensitivity to UV radiation. On the basis of our findings, some general functional conclusions for very small compound eyes are formulated.

  • intraguild predation of orius niger hemiptera anthocoridae on Trichogramma evanescens hymenoptera Trichogrammatidae
    European Journal of Endocrinology, 2017
Co-Authors: Serkan Pehlivan, Alican Kurtulus, Tugcan Alinc, Ekrem Atakan
    Abstract:

Intraguild predation of a generalist predator, Orius niger Wolff (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) on Trichogramma evanescens Westwood (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), was determined in choice and no-choice experiments using a factitious host, Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), under laboratory conditions. Choice and no-choice experiments were conducted in order to assess the level of intraguild predation of O. niger on E. kuehniella eggs parasitized by T. evanescens. In no-choice experiments, approximately 50 sterile (1) non-parasitized, (2) 3-day-old parasitized, or (3) 6-day-old parasitized E. kuehniella eggs were offered to 24-h-old females of O. niger in glass tubes. In choice experiments approximately 25 eggs of two of the three groups mentioned above were offered to 24-h-old O. niger females. In both choice and no-choice experiments, O. niger consumed more non-parasitized eggs of E. kuehniella. However, intraguild predation occurred, especially of 3-day-old parasitoids, but very few 6-day-old parasitized eggs were consumed. The preference index was nearly 1 indicating O. niger preferred mainly non-parasitized E. kuehniella eggs. A lower level of intraguild predation is expected under field conditions but needs to be investigated using further experiments.
