  • Sonochemical Treatment of Orange II Using Ultrasound at a Range of Frequencies and Powers
Journal of Advanced Oxidation Technologies, 2016
Co-Authors: Meral Dükkancı, Mircea Vinatoru, Timothy J. Mason
    Abstract:

A range of methods are reported for the treatment of Orange II in aqueous solution with a variety of Ultrasonic Equipment in the absence of oxidants. The frequencies studied were 20 kHz (using a probe system) and a range of baths at 40, 380, 850, 1000 and 1176 kHz using different power inputs. Using ultrasound alone the higher frequencies were more efficient for the decolorization of Orange II. The most effective decolorization of Orange II in terms of power was achieved at 850 kHz and increased from 4.1% to 49.0% with increasing Ultrasonic power from 2.04 W to 22.07 W over 2 hours. This trend was in good agreement with the corresponding production of H2O2 during the sonication of water in the absence of Orange II. The decolorization followed first order reaction kinetics. A simple economic comparative assessment of the different types of Ultrasonic Equipment in terms of power consumption and effective decolorization revealed that the 850 kHz bath at a power of 22.07 W was the most cost effective system.

  • An introduction to sonochemistry
    Endeavour, 2004
    Co-Authors: Timothy J. Mason, J.phillip Lorimer
    Abstract:

Abstract Although the effect of ultra high-frequency sound waves on chemical reactions was recorded more than 60 years ago it is only during the last two decades that sonochemistry has become an important field of research in its own right. This development is directly linked to the development of Ultrasonic Equipment for other purposes. This article illustrates the diversity of current interest and reviews some prospects for the future.

  • Applied Sonochemistry: The Uses of Power Ultrasound in Chemistry and Processing
    2002
    Co-Authors: Timothy J. Mason, J.p. Lorimer
    Abstract:

Introduction to Applied Ultrasonics. General Principles. Synthesis. Sonochemistry in Environmental Protection and Remediation. Polymers. Sonoelectrochemistry. Ultrasonic Equipment and Chemical Reactor Design. Subject Index.

  • Practical Considerations for Process Optimization
    Synthetic Organic Sonochemistry, 1998
Co-Authors: Timothy J. Mason, Eric Cordemans De Meulenaer
    Abstract:

The main intention of this chapter is to provide a straightforward guide to practical aspects of sonochemistry for a chemist who wants to use Ultrasonic Equipment. There is much difficulty in giving a complete account of the technical aspects of sonochemistry in a limited number of pages, and the reader can find more complete technical descriptions in recent books.1
