    The aim of the experiment was to determine the effect of different sources of tannins on the in vitro rumen fermentation with focus on methane production. In the experiment, a rumen simulation system (RUSITEC) equipped with 4 fermenters (1 L) was used in three replicated runs (6 d of adaptation and 4 d of sampling) to study the effects of Quercus cortex extract (QC), Vaccinium vitis idaea (VVI) dried leaf extract and a mixture of VVI/QC on rumen microbial fermentation. Fermenters were fed 10.9 g/d of dry matter (DM) of a 600:400 forage:concentrate diet. Treatments were control, QC (2.725 mL), VVI leaves 0.080 g) and mixture of QC/VVI (1.362 mL+0.040 g) and were randomly assigned to fermenters within periods.     Abstract:

    We examined the host-pathogen system of an evergreen dwarf shrub Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea and its fungal pathogen Exobasidium splendidum in two habitats, a cleared forest (disturbed habitat), and an untouched forest (undisturbed habitat). Our aims were to find out how environmental factors, plant community characters, and the characters of V. Vitis-Idaea vary among the two habitats and whether these characters correlate with the frequency of E. splendidum. Our results suggest that environmental factors in the disturbed habitat are more favorable for the disease through increased growth of the host V. Vitis-Idaea and possibly by increased growth and reproduction of the pathogen. The high emergence rate of new V. Vitis-Idaea ramets in the disturbed habitat resulted in a younger ramet age structure as compared with the undisturbed habitat. Consequently, the ratio of growing to nongrowing ramets was higher in the disturbed habitat. We consider growth to be a prerequisite for V. Vitis-Idaea becoming infected. Thus, a low amount of growing ramets may be seen as a characteristic of undisturbed V. vitisidaea stands, which buffers the plant against E. splendidum. On the other hand, shoot and ramet death caused by E. splendidum may induce compensatory growth in V. Vitis-Idaea, thus supporting the survival of the fungus.

    Abstract:

    Abstract The aim of this paper is to review the experimental studies performed with two important species (i.e. Vaccinium myrtillus and Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea) of the shrub layer of boreal forests. The focus is on ecophysiology and stress tolerance under conditions of air pollution and global change. Our objective was to make an overview of studies of abiotic stress related to global change on the above species, and discuss the reported effects of these environmental factors. These issues include nitrogen, heavy metals, radionuclides, salt, ozone, carbon dioxide, warming climate, declining snow cover, periodic droughts, fire and elevated UV radiation. The findings suggest that both species are relatively tolerant to many abiotic environmental stresses: increased nitrogen and metal supply have negligible impacts on these species, as the atmospheric gaseous compounds reported. In some cases the effects are even positive, since extra nitrogen may improve the frost hardiness of V. Vitis-Idaea, and V. myrtillus may even benefit from elevated CO2. Both species also seem to recover well from fires. However, the reports demonstrated that both have species-specific areas of weakness: (1) V. myrtillus is susceptible to stress caused by warming winter, and (2) frost hardiness of V. Vitis-Idaea may be reduced under enhanced UV radiation.

    Abstract:

    : The aim of this study was to investigate plant frost hardiness responses to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, since the few results reported are largely contradictory. It was hypothesized that functional adaptation of life forms could explain these contradictions. Dwarf shrubs and tree seedlings, representing both evergreen and deciduous forms, were tested (Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea, Vaccinium myrtillus, Pinus sylvestris, Betula pubescens and its red form f. rubra). The research was performed in Sodankyla, Northern Finland (67°N), with enhanced UV-B- and UV-A-radiation treatments between 2002 and 2009. Plant frost hardiness was determined using the freeze-induced electrolyte leakage method in early autumn, during the onset of the frost hardening process. Additional physiological variables (malondialdehyde, glutathione, total phenols, C and N contents) were analyzed in V. Vitis-Idaea to explain the possible responses. These variables did not respond significantly to UV-radiation treatments, but explained the frost hardiness well (r² = 0.678). The main finding was that frost hardiness decreased in the evergreen shrub V. Vitis-Idaea, particularly with enhanced UV-A radiation. No significant responses were observed with the other plants. Therefore, this study does not support the idea that enhanced UV radiation could increase plant frost hardiness.

    Clonal propagation and limited dispersal of seeds lead to genetic population structures in which most potential mates are relatives. If the species suffers from inbreeding depression or is self-incompatible, the number of seeds matured per fruit may be limited by the lack of outcrossing by unrelated pollen. We tested for distance-related genetic structure by hand-pollinating plants at increasing distances and measuring fruit set (berries/pollinated flowers) and seed number per fruit in natural populations of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and lingonberry (Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea L.). Bagging of the flower buds without natural (pollination by insects) or hand-pollination yielded almost no fruit or seed, suggesting that the species are obligately insect pollinated. Self-pollination led to a significant reduction in seed number per fruit and increased seed abortion compared with cross-pollination.   • Acceleration of frost hardening in Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea by nitrogen fertilization.

    Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea L. plants were grown in open-top chambers in northern Finland under CO2 enrichment (600–700 ppm) with or without elevated (double ambient) O3. Half of the plants received ammonium nitrate fertilizer equivalent to 200 kg N ha–1 year–1. Frost hardiness during the period of frost hardening was determined three times after the end of the experiment, at the beginning of August, September and October. The results indicate that frost hardening of the Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea is accelerated by N fertilization. However, CO2 and O3 enrichment had no measurable effect on frost hardiness.
