  • Real-time kymographic imaging for visualizing human vocal-fold vibratory function.
The Review of scientific instruments, 2007
Co-Authors: Qingjun Qiu, Harm K. Schutte
    Abstract:

A stand-alone kymographic system for visualizing human vocal-fold vibration in real time is presented. By using a dual charge-coupled-device construction, the system not only provides kymographic images but also simultaneously presents structural images for navigating the endoscope to a desired position. With a temporal resolution of 7200lines∕s, the kymographic imaging produces a sufficient speed to investigate most types of vocal-fold vibrations. Moreover, by buffering the kymographic images during the Vertical Blanking periods, the system can retrieve an uninterrupted kymographic image sequence even though the television standard is used. The results from preliminary clinical evaluation present evidence that the real-time kymographic imaging substantially reduces the time required for functional evaluation of the vocal-fold vibrations.

  • A Real-Time Mt System For Translating Broadcast Captions
    1997
    Co-Authors: Eric Nyberg, Teruko Mitamura
    Abstract:

This presentation demonstrates a new multi-engine machine translation system, which combines knowledge-based and example-based machine translation strategies for realtime translation of business news captions from English to German. 1. Introduction Broadcast captioning is derived from a textual transcription of a television broadcast, and is typically prouduced in real-time by a human operator using a stenography machine. The ASCII transcription is then encoded and transmitted in the Vertical Blanking interval (VBI) portion of the video signal. Some broadcasts (such as entertainment shows in syndication), are captioned off-line, but many shows of interest (such as "headline news" programs) are always captioned in real-time, with only a few seconds delay between the audio signal and the transcribed captions. Real-time translation of broadcast captioning poses several challenges for machine translation. The vocabulary and grammar of the source text are uncontrolled. It is not feasible t..
