  • Virtual Manufacturing: Scope, Socio-economic Aspects and Future Trends
Materials Forming Machining and Tribology, 2018
Co-Authors: Kaushik Kumar, Divya Zindani, J. Paulo Davim
    Abstract:

Manufacturing environment encompasses a wide range of activities such as product, resources, process and plant and is an indispensable part of any economy. However, the requirement of flexible Manufacturing system has been increasing rapidly because of the increasing complexity of the products and processes that have become highly sophisticated. The challenges can be well addressed through the Virtual Manufacturing environment. The present chapter aims to discuss the scope of the Virtual Manufacturing environment. The chapter also discusses on the socio-economic aspects of the Virtual Manufacturing technology. Finally the chapter discusses on the economic benefits of Virtual Manufacturing technology (VM). Chapter concludes with the discussion on the future trends in machine tool industry, automotive and aerospace industries.

  • Virtual Manufacturing of various types of gears and validation of the technique using rapid prototype
    Virtual and Physical Prototyping, 2012
    Co-Authors: G Pohit, Kaushik Kumar
    Abstract:

Virtual Manufacturing of gears is carried out to illustrate the fairly complicated gear generation process and the associated simultaneous motions being provided to the gear blank and the gear cutter. An attempt has been made to capture the phenomenon of chip formation as well. Generation of various types of gears are shown employing two types of operation, one being use of a gear hobbing cutter having multiple cutting edges. As such validation of the Virtual Manufacturing technique is always a difficult task. Using rapid prototype technology, a novel approach is proposed to ascertain the efficacy of the Virtual Manufacturing process being followed. The methodology is quite general and can be used for validation of any other Virtual Manufacturing process as well.

  • capability based distributed layout approach for Virtual Manufacturing cells
International Journal of Production Research, 2003
    Co-Authors: Adil Baykasoglu
    Abstract:

It is shown in the literature that in highly volatile Manufacturing environments functional job shops and classical cellular Manufacturing systems do not perform well. Classical cellular Manufacturing systems are very sensitive to changing production requirements due to their limited flexibility. In order to adapt cellular Manufacturing systems to volatile Manufacturing environments, the Virtual cellular Manufacturing concept was proposed in the 1980s by the National Bureau of Standards in USA. This concept is similar to group technology where job families are processed in Manufacturing cells. The main difference between a Virtual cell and the classic cell is in the dynamic nature of the Virtual Manufacturing cell; whereas the physical location and identity of classic cell is fixed, the Virtual cell is not fixed and will vary with changing production requirements. The Virtual Manufacturing cell concept allows the flexible reconfiguration of shop floors in response to changing requirements. In the literatu...

  • The Virtual Manufacturing concept: Scope, Socio-Economic Aspects and Future Trends
    2004
Co-Authors: Damien Chablat, Philippe Dépincé, Eric Noël, Peer-oliver Woelk
    Abstract:

The research area "Virtual Manufacturing (VM)'' is the use of information technology and computer simulation to model real world Manufacturing processes for the purpose of analysing and understanding them. As automation technologies such as CAD/CAM have substantially shortened the time required to design products, Virtual Manufacturing will have a similar effect on the Manufacturing phase thanks to the modelling, simulation and optimisation of the product and the processes involved in its fabrication. After a description of Virtual Manufacturing (definitions and scope), we present some socio-economic factors of VM and finaly some "hot topics'' for the future are proposed.

  • Virtual Manufacturing : Tools for improving Design and Production
    2004
Co-Authors: Philippe Dépincé, Damien Chablat, Peer-oliver Woelk
    Abstract:

The research area "Virtual Manufacturing" can be defined as an integrated Manufacturing environment which can enhance one or several levels of decision and control in Manufacturing process. Several domains can be addressed: Product and Process Design, Process and Production Planning, Machine Tool, Robot and Manufacturing System. As automation technologies such as CAD/CAM have substantially shortened the time required to design products, Virtual Manufacturing will have a similar effect on the Manufacturing phase thanks to the modelling, simulation and optimisation of the product and the processes involved in its fabrication.
