    Abstract:

    An expert system for solving Group Technology (GT) problems has been developed, considering simplified models of industrial GT problems. It solves problems of varying characteristics using in-built algorithms, namely average linkage clustering algorithms (ALC), cluster identification algorithms (CI) and generalised p-median model. Depending upon the characteristics of GT problem, a suitable algorithm is selected. The algorithm takes the required inputs for the problem and gives the output, which consists of machine cells with corresponding part families and the bottleneck parts, if any.

    Abstract Group Technology (GT) is a method of organization for factories in which organizational units known as “Groups” each complete a particular set or “family” of parts with no backflow, or crossflow between Groups, and are equipped with all the facilities they need to do so. Production flow analysis (PFA) is a technique for planning the change to GT in existing batch and jobbing production factories. It finds a total division into Groups, using the existing machines and methods to make the existing parts, without any need to buy additional machine tools. Because the change to GT is generally both possible (if PFA is used for planning) and profitable, process organization, in which organizational units specialize in particular processes, is now obsolete.

    In this paper we have planned to give the detailed examination of Group Technology (GT) and its principle of implementation in the field of cellular manufacturing to achieve the drastic change in output of production. Cellular manufacturing system has been proved a vital approach for batch, job shop production and some extend to process industries and Group Technology has been an essential tool for developing a cellular manufacturing system. With the principle implementation of Group Technology act as a traditional concept and still plays significant role in new manufacturing concepts like just in time, total quality management and technologies such as optimized production Technology, computer integrated manufacturing in manufacturing system concept of Group Technology helps to achieve reduction in setup time, inventory levels and logistics of goods and also gives effective control of production and also we narrate some examples to easily understand the Group Technology concept by produce the basic ideas about GT in the field of cellular manufacturing also decision- making and accountability are more locally focused, often resulting in quality and productivity improvements.
