  • competitiveness indices and developing countries an Economic evaluation of the global competitiveness report
    World Development, 2001
    Co-Authors: Sanjaya Lall
    Abstract:

Developing countries' policy makers worry about national competitiveness and closely watch indices ranking international competitive performance. This paper analyzes, from a development Economics perspective, if competitiveness is a legitimate concern, and if the leading indices deserve the attention they get. It assesses the best-known index, The Global Competitiveness Report of the World Economic Forum, and finds deficiencies at several levels. Its definitions are too broad, the approach biased and the methodology flawed. Many qualitative measures are vague, redundant or wrong. These weak theoretical and empirical foundations reduce the value of the indices for analytical or policy purposes.

  • ideology and political discourse a critical discourse analysis of erdogan s political speech
    2010
    Co-Authors: Fatih Bayram
    Abstract:

The way we perceive language is the foundation of our social construction and individual or group relationships, and studies in sociolinguistics have tried to explain this relationship between the use of language and the importance of perceptions. A particular discourse, spoken or written, can stem from different sources such as power, cultural or social background, region or social status. This paper aims to discuss the realisation of identity and background by means of language use in a political discourse, which is mainly grounded in Norman Fairclough‟s assumptions in critical discourse analysis. For this aim, the discursive strategies of the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a debate in the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2009 will be examined within the context of his ideological, cultural and language background.

World Economic Forum and INSEAD, Insight Report - edited by Soumitra Dutta and Benat Bilbao-Osorio, 2012. It is the result of a collaboration between the World Economic Forum and INSEAD... Over the past decade, the World has become increasingly hyperconnected. This hyperconnectivity is deeply redefining relationships between individuals, consumers and enterprises, and citizens and governments; it is introducing new opportunities but also new challenges and risks in terms of individual rights and privacy, security, cybercrime, the flow of personal data, and access to information. As a result, our economies and societies will undergo fundamental transformations. Mastering and leveraging these transformations to maximize the positive impacts and increase resilience against the risks that ICT can bring to the economy, society, environment, and healthcare are crucial for boosting Economic competitiveness and well-being. The present edition of The Global Information Technology Report (GITR) analyzes in detail the main drivers and impacts of this ICT-enabled hyperconnected World and contributes to the work of the World Economic Forum’s recently launched Hyperconnected World Initiative, which establishes a holistic means of understanding the systemic nature of change in a hyperconnected World...
