  • Magnetic Adsorbents for the treatment of water/wastewater—A review
Journal of Water Process Engineering, 2015
Co-Authors: Dhruv Mehta, Siddharth Mazumdar, S.k. Singh
    Abstract:

Abstract In recent years, adsorption has displayed promising and effective results as a treatment technology for water and wastewater by industries. In the process, a number of Adsorbents have been synthesized and applied for the treatment of pollutants such as metals, dyes, pharmaceutical products in solutions. However, for adsorption to be unconditionally adopted by industries, a few obstacles such as high capital cost, difficult segregation of Adsorbent from solution, and complex synthesis processes need to be addressed. The removal of suspend Adsorbents in wastewater from a continuous flow system is a challenge which if addressed properly would enable us to recover the spent Adsorbent efficiently. The spent Adsorbents can then be regenerated and used again by the industries thereby leading to reduced capital investment. Therefore, studies have been carried out aiming at the incorporation of magnetism in such Adsorbents to aid their removal from wastewater. This review aims to comprehensively list and discuss Adsorbents which exhibit magnetic properties and their adsorption behaviour under diverse conditions. The literature survey presented in this paper renders evidence to the good potential of magnetic Adsorbents to remove various pollutants from wastewater. However, the practical utility of such Adsorbents needs to be explored before they can be commercially applied.

  • utilization of sludge based Adsorbents for the removal of various pollutants a review
Science of The Total Environment, 2017
Co-Authors: Parmila Devi, Anil K Saroha
    Abstract:

Sludge based Adsorbents are widely used for the removal of various pollutants from water and wastewater systems and the available data is much diversified. The purpose of this review is to organize and critically review the scattered available information on the potential of use of sludge based Adsorbents for the removal of various pollutants. It was observed that performance of the sludge based Adsorbents varies depending on the type of pollutants, type of precursor sludge, carbonization time-temperature profile and the type of activation conditions used. The variation in pyrolysis and activation conditions found to directly affect the Adsorbent properties, adsorption capacity and the mechanism of pollutant removal by sludge based Adsorbents. The interaction mechanisms of pollutants with Adsorbent surface found to have a detrimental effect on desorption and regeneration of the Adsorbents and its recycling potential. Therefore, desorption and regeneration technique used for recycle of the Adsorbents is also discussed in detail. Moreover, life cycle and cost analysis of sludge based Adsorbents is assessed to ensure the cost effectiveness of their application in water treatment operations.

  • The use of date palm as a potential Adsorbent for wastewater treatment: a review
Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2012
Co-Authors: Tanweer Ahmad, Mohammad Danish, Mohammad Rafatullah, Arniza Ghazali, Othman Sulaiman, Rokiah Hashim, Mohamad Nasir Mohamad Ibrahim
    Abstract:

Background In tropical countries, the palm tree is one of the most abundant and important trees. Date palm is a principal fruit grown in many regions of the world. It is abundant, locally available and effective material that could be used as an Adsorbent for the removal of different pollutants from aqueous solution. Review This article presents a review on the role of date palm as Adsorbents in the removal of unwanted materials such as acid and basic dyes, heavy metals, and phenolic compounds. Many studies on adsorption properties of various low cost Adsorbent, such as agricultural waste and activated carbons based on agricultural waste have been reported in recent years. Conclusion Studies have shown that date palm-based Adsorbents are the most promising Adsorbents for removing unwanted materials. No previous review is available where researchers can get an overview of the adsorption capacities of date palm-based Adsorbent used for the adsorption of different pollutants. This review provides the recent literature demonstrating the usefulness of date palm biomass-based Adsorbents in the adsorption of various pollutants.

  • evaluation of adsorption of organic solvents to modified hydrophobic silica Adsorbents based on hansen solubility parameter
    Separation and Purification Technology, 2019
    Co-Authors: Nobuyuki Fujiwara, Hideki Yamamoto
    Abstract:

Abstract Adsorption is an effective methodology for the removal of organic matter. Several studies have shown that adsorption performance is dependent on pore size, specific surface area, and the affinity between the Adsorbent and adsorbed material. In this study, we concentrated on the effect of the affinity between the surface of the Adsorbent and the adsorbed matter by examining the adsorption of organic solvents from organic/aqueous mixtures using three types of hydrophobic silica Adsorbents. The Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) of the Adsorbents were determined using the group contribution method. A linear relationship between the logarithm of the amount of adsorbed organic solvent and the difference between the HSP values of the organic solvents and Adsorbents was obtained with a high correlation coefficient. These experimental results suggest that the affinity between the Adsorbent and adsorbed matter can be well-described by the HSPs of the components.
