    Abstract:

    For over one hundred years, critics have widely regarded Edgar Allan Poe as an Aesthetician of literature as a whole, which has to a great extent oriented the interpretation of his prose narratives. In this essay I revisit Poe9s relevant essays and reveal that Poe9s Aesthetic conception of the subject matter of poetry is due to poetry9s peculiar generic characteristics not shared by prose fiction. Poe makes an unequivocal distinction in prose fiction between structural design and subject matter. While putting the tale9s structural design completely on a par with that of poetry, Poe treats the tale9s subject matter as different in nature from that of poetry——as ““antagonistical”” to Beauty and often based on the ethically related, though not ethically confined, ““Truth.”” In this essay I argue that if some of Poe9s tales convey a moral, then that moral tends to be implicit and inseparable from the structural ““unity of effect,”” and the tale may react or respond to the cultural context in a certain way. In Poe9s ““The Tell-Tale Heart”” we can see a characteristic interaction among a structurally unified dramatic irony, an implicit moral, and the historical ““insanity defense”” controversy.

    This paper argues that it is undue to take western Aesthetics as " authoritative discourse" or " mainstream ideology" in present-day world Aesthetics. The western Aesthetic Theory lacks compatibility and is far from being comprehensive, because it does not cover the highlights of oriental Aesthetics, and nor can it clearly decipher oriental Aesthetics. Oriental Aesthetics has its unique thinking mode and poetic theoretical system. If these are excluded, it is impossible to have global Aesthetics. This is a new subject confronting Aesthetic study in this age of globalization.

    Abstract:

    Kevin Lynch's seminal work of 1960, The Image of the City, continues to be a standard reference book for urban designers and social scientists alike. Nevertheless, the historical context through which this text emerged has remained relatively unexplored. The obscurity of the book's intellectual genesis has been compounded by Lynch's own bibliographic omissions. By revealing Lynch's full range of sources in the often contradictory theories and debates of the early 1950s, this paper illuminates an overlooked moment in the intellectual genealogy of 20th century urban design. The paper argues that Lynch effectively combined but also transformed contradictory strands of early 20th century urban Aesthetic Theory into a contemporary model of ‘urban design’. Rather than presenting some unified, ‘organic’ order, integrating both social and urban forms within some universal idea of ‘modern man’, Lynch's work suggested a way in which a pluralistic urban society, characterized by multiplicity and difference, might ne...
