The first chapter presents the current research literature on this topic and addresses the differences between unicode emojis and the former ASCII-signs. Then we discuss a question hotly debated by the public: May emojis be considered the basis of a new universal language? After having shown on both the lexical and the grammatical level that this cannot be the case we move on to the question whether, within our Alphabetic System of writing, emojis may be used as additional graphic signs. The last chapter offers some examples of WhatsApp messages containing emojis in the various functions discussed before (as allographs and ideograms, for instance). Furthermore, a frequency analysis based on the Swiss WhatsApp corpus shows the distribution of emojis in these data

2008Co-Authors: Linnea C EhriAbstract:The hallmark of skilled reading is the ability to read individual words accurately and quickly in isolation as well as in text, referred to as “context free” word reading skill (Stanovich, 1980). For a skilled reader, even a quick glance at a word activates its pronunciation and meaning. Being able to read words from memory by sight is valuable because it allows readers to focus their attention on constructing the meaning of the text while their eyes recognize individual words automatically. If readers have to stop and decode words, their reading is slowed down and their train of thought disrupted. This chapter examines theories and findings on the development of sight word reading. Sight word reading is not limited to high-frequency or irregularly spelled words, contrary to the beliefs of some, but includes all words that readers can read from memory. Also sight word reading is not a strategy for reading words, contrary to some views. Being strategic involves choosing procedures to optimize outcomes, such as figuring out unfamiliar words by decoding (Gough, 1972) or analogizing (Goswami, 1986, 1988) or prediction (Goodman, 1970; Tunmer & Chapman, 1998). By contrast, sight word reading happens automatically without the influence of intention or choice. Reading words from memory by sight is especially important in English because the Alphabetic System is variable and open to decoding errors.

Readers read familiar words by accessing them in memory, called sight word reading. With practice, all words come to be read automatically by sight, which is the most efficient, unobtrusive way to read words in text. The process of learning sight words involves forming connections between graphemes and phonemes to bond spellings of the words to their pronunciations and meanings in memory. The process is enabled by phonemic awareness and by knowledge of the Alphabetic System, which functions as a powerful mnemonic to secure spellings in memory. Recent studies show that Alphabetic knowledge enhances children's learning of new vocabulary words, and it influences their memory for doubled letters in words. Such relatedness is an important linguistic context for the appearance of Xiaojing script, which can also be attributed to the historical fact that the Muslim immigrants in the Central Plains in the turn of Yuan and Ming Dynasties tried to become indigenized. They learnt Chinese language but were not good at it.

2020Co-Authors: R TaufiqurrochmanAbstract:The growth of the Arabic dictionary in Indonesia begins with the emergence of a morphological System dictionary that refers to Arabic grammar, specifically morphology. This System is appropriate for learning Arabic in traditional pesantren, which uses grammar and translation methods. However, in the mid-90s, the dictionary System transformed with the advent of the Arabic dictionary with an Alphabetical arrangement. This new System is considered more comfortable and more practical for learning Arabic, especially for students at the beginner level. This research proves that the Alphabetic dictionary System is superior and gets a positive response from dictionary users in Indonesia. Therefore, the Alphabetical dictionary System continues to emerge because it is needed, its composition is faster, and its use is easier and more practical for students at the elementary level. For students at the secondary level or students who are studying Arabic grammar, the morphological System dictionary is considered more appropriate because it functions as a medium to practice understanding changes in word forms and morphological rules.
