Transportation Research Record, 1997Co-Authors: Paul Leiby, Jonathan RubinAbstract:The Transitional Alternative Fuels Vehicle model simulates the use and cost of Alternative Fuels and Alternative fuel vehicles over the period 1996 to 2010. It is designed to examine the transitional period of Alternative fuel and vehicle use. It accounts for dynamic linkages between investments and vehicle and fuel production capacity, tracks vehicle stock evolution, and represents the effects of increasing scale and expanding retail fuel availability on the effective costs to consumers. Fuel and vehicle prices and choices are endogenous. Preliminary results that illustrate the role of potentially important transitional phenomena are discussed. This model extends previous, long-run comparative static analyses of policies that assumed mature vehicle and fuel industries. As a dynamic transitional model, it can help to assess what may be necessary to reach mature, large-scale, Alternative fuel and vehicle markets, and what it would cost.

Alternative Fuels an overview of current trends and scope for future

The present article reviews the prospects and opportunities for using Alternative Fuels in different applications. The properties of these Fuels and their performance as a fuel are discussed in detail. Vegetable oils present a very promising scenario of functioning as Alternatives to fossil Fuels. Use of biodiesel in a conventional diesel engine results in a substantial reduction in unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and nitrogen oxides. Different Alternative Fuels have been compared with the conventional Fuels, and clearly the consumption of the latter can be significantly decreased by the use the blended Fuels. Most of the Alternative Fuels have properties similar to those of the existing Fuels, and therefore the technology required to handle them is already well known. Hydrogen is an exception to this, and its ignition properties are quite different from those of the conventional Fuels. Difficulties are thus expected during the storage, transport, and use of hydrogen as a fuel. Other technologies are also discussed such as Alternative routes to equivalents of conventional Fuels, like CTL. Finally, the emulsified Fuels including the use of oxygenates have been discussed.

cement manufacturing using Alternative Fuels and the advantages of process modelling
Fuel Processing Technology, 2004Co-Authors: Ursula Kaantee, Ron Zevenhoven, Rainer Backman, Mikko HupaAbstract:Energy costs and environmental standards encouraged cement manufacturers world-wide to evaluate to what extent conventional Fuels can be replaced by Alternative Fuels, i.e., processed waste materials. Clinker burning is well suited for various Alternative Fuels. In order select a suitable Alternative fuel, a commercial modelling tool (ASPEN PLUS®) is used to model the four-stage pre-heater kiln system of a full-scale cement plant (clinker production ∼2900 tons/day), using petcoke as fuel. The goal is to optimise process control and Alternative fuel consumption, while maintaining clinker product quality. Calculations with varying amounts of different Fuels are compared with a reference case. The dependence of process performance on the amount of combustion air is clearly demonstrated and the energy demand of the process could be predicted for varying fuel mixes.

Truck operators' perspectives on use of Alternative Fuels

PettijohnAbstract:Recent concerns for the nation's environmental resources have rekindled interest in clean-burning Alternative Fuels. Current efforts toward environmental conservation have been directed toward trucking fleets because these fleets usually refuel at centralized locations. To assess interest and the future adoption of Alternative Fuels, a mail questionnaire was sent to 537 trucking firms. The questionnaire was designed to collect three types of information: perceptions of the most viable Alternative fuel; attributes or characteristics of Alternative Fuels that would motivate a conversion decision; and expectations regarding legislative changes or future enforcement of current policies.
