    Abstract:

    Background. A dry socket also referred to as Alveolar Osteitis (AO) is a common postoperative complication following tooth extraction, due to the disruption of the clot within the wound. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of concentrated growth factor (CGF) in the healing of Alveolar Osteitis following tooth extraction. Methods. The study was conducted at University Dental Hospital Sharjah, UAE. Patients undergoing tooth extraction at the oral surgery clinic were advised to return immediately if they suffer from pain. Over the following first week after tooth extraction, patients who reported pain symptoms were recalled and all dry sockets were identified. The patients were divided into two groups. Group I patients received conventional treatment with socket curettage and saline irrigation only, while in group II CGF was inserted into the socket. Both groups were observed for pain score and quantification of granulation tissue formation. Results. A total of 40 dry socket patients, aged between 18 and 60 years, from a total of 1,250 patients, were included in the study. 30 patients were given conventional treatment while another 10 patients were given CGF. Patients who received CGF had a pain score of 7–10 at presentation, and the pain score dropped to 0–3 on day 4 and further improved to 0-1 on day 7 ( ). Granulation tissue formation appeared in the conventional group I on day 7 while the CGF group II showed earlier granulation tissue formation by day 4 ( ). The posttreatment pain score is inversely proportional to the amount and rate of granulation tissue formation in the socket. Conclusion. The study suggests that delivery of CGF into a dry socket helps relieve pain and expedite the wound healing process as shown by a statistically much lower pain score and earlier and more rapid formation of granulation tissue when compared to the conventional Alveolar Osteitis therapy.

    Abstract:

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemberian oxygen dental ger pada soket gigi pasca operasi molar ketiga bawah terhadap pencegahan terjadinya Alveolar Osteitis. Alveolar Osteitis adalah komplikasi pasca operasi yang ditandai dengan rasa sakittidak ditemukan jendalan darah dalam soketsoket akan terlihat kosong, kotor oleh sisa makanan maupun jaringan nekrotik. Salah satu penyebab Alveolar Osteitis ini adalah bakteri. Oxygen dental ger yang mengandung chlorine dioxide merupakan desinfektan yang dapat membunuh bakteri, jamur, ragi, virus dan protozoa. Pemberian oxygen dental ger pada soket gigi ini diharapkan dapat mencegah terjadinya Alveolar Osteitis. . Untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemberian oxygen dental ger terhadap pencegahan Alveolar Osteitis dilakukan penelitian di Poliklinik Bedah Mulut RSUP Dr. Sardjito terhadap 60 pasien laki-Iaki, dengan umur diatas 25 tahun, 30 pasien diberikan oxygen dental gefP dan 30 lagi tidak diberikan oxygen dental ger pada soket gigi sebagai kontrol, kemudian dilakukan kontrol pada hari kelima. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa 30 pasien yang tidak diberikan oxygen dental ger pada soket gigi terdapat 8 pasien (26,67%) dengan Alveolar Osteitis, sedangkan 30 pasien yang diberikan oxygen dental ger pada soket gigi terdapat 1 pasien (3,33%) dengan Alveolar Osteitis. Uji statistik dengan menggunakan Fisher\u27s exact test menunjukkan ada perbedaan signifikan antara pemberian dan tanpa pemberian Oxygen dental gefP terhadap insidensi terjadinya Alveolar Osteitis: Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah aplikasi oxygen dental gefP pada soket gigi pasca operasi gigi molar ketiga rahang bawah dapat mencegah terjadinya Alveolar Osteitis

    Purpose To evaluate the effectiveness of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in preventing the development of Alveolar Osteitis (AO). Materials and Methods In a double-blinded study, patients with bilateral impacted mandibular third molars underwent surgical extractions, with one socket receiving PRF and the other one serving as a control. The surgeon and patient were unaware of the study or control side. The predictor variable was the PRF application and was categorized as PRF and non-PRF. The outcome variable was the development of AO during the first postoperative week. Other study variables included age, gender, smoking status, irrigation volume, extraction difficulty, surgeon experience, and number of anesthetic cartridges. Data were analyzed using χ 2 and t tests, with the significance level set at a P value less than .05. Results Seventy-eight patients (mean age, 25 yr) underwent 156 impacted third molar surgeries. The overall frequency of AO was 14.74% for all surgeries. The frequency of AO in the PRF group was significantly lower than in the non-PRF group (odds ratio = 0.44; P Conclusion Based on the results of the present study, PRF application may decrease the risk of AO development after mandibular third molar surgery.

    Abstract:

    Introduction: Alveolar Osteitis (AO) is one of the most common postoperative complications after third molar surgery. Various techniques have been used to reduce the risk of AO. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of Chlorhexidine (CHX) bioadhesive gel in preventing the development of AO. Methods: Patients with bilateral impacted mandibular third molars underwent surgical extraction of both teeth. One socket was randomly received CHX gel and the contralateral socket served as the control. The outcome variable was development of AO and the CHX gel application was the predictor variable. Data were analyzed using chi-square test with the confidence interval of 95%. Results: 41 patients (27 females and 14 males) with mean age of 24.15 ± 5.02 years underwent 82 surgeries. Total of 11 sockets (13.41%) developed AO. The frequency of AO in CHX gel (2 cases, 4.87%) side was significantly lower than control (9 cases, 21.95%) side (P-value < 0.05). No side effects observed following CHX gel application. Conclusion: Application of CHX gel could be an effective approach to reduce the risk of developing AO following mandibular third molar surgery

    Purpose To measure the association between the menstrual cycle and the frequency of Alveolar Osteitis (AO). Materials and Methods In a study with a single-blind design, patients with bilateral impacted third molar teeth underwent randomized surgical extraction: one tooth during the menstrual period and one during the middle of the cycle. The postoperative examiner was unaware of the menstrual cycle status of the patients. The predictor variable was the timing of the menstrual cycle and was grouped as mid-cycle and menstrual period. The outcome variable was AO, which was measured (without knowledge of the menstrual cycle timing) at 2 to 7 days postoperatively. Other study variables included oral contraceptive (OC) use, smoking status, irrigation used during surgery, extraction difficulty, surgeon experience, number of local anesthetic cartridges used, and patient age. Appropriate bi- and multivariate statistics were computed, and the level of statistical significance was set at P Results A total of 145 female patients, with a mean age of 24 years, underwent 290 third molar extractions. The overall frequency of AO was 23.45%. The frequency of AO was significantly greater in the middle of the cycle than during the menstrual period inboth the OC users and nonusers ( P P P > .05). Conclusions According to the results of the present study, the menstrual cycle could be a determinant risk factor in the frequency of AO. We recommend that elective procedures be performed during the menstrual period in both OC users and nonusers to eliminate the effect of cycle-related hormonal changes on the development of AO.
