  • Solar drying of Andrographis paniculata using a parabolicshaped solar tunnel dryer
    Procedia Engineering, 2012
Co-Authors: Nattapon Srisittipokakun, K. Kirdsiri, Jakrapong Kaewkhao
    Abstract:

Abstract Solar drying experiments of Andrographis paniculata were conducted in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand. For this purpose, a new type parabolic-shaped solar tunnel dryer was designed and manufactured. Solar dryer consisted of a flat-plate solar collector and a drying tunnel. The collector and the drying tunnel were covered with polycarbonate plates to reduce heat losses and placed in series. Heated air in solar air collector was forced through Andrographis paniculata by DC-fans driven by 15 W solar cell modules. The total area of the collector was 108 m2. During the drying period, drying air temperature, relative humidity, air flow rates, solar radiation, and lose of mass were measured at different parts of the dryer for every 10 minutes. To investigate its performance, the dryer was used to dry 100 kg of Andrographis paniculata. The dryer could be used for Andrographis paniculata of 75% (wb) moisture content, and they could be dried within 2-3 days, with 7% (wb) remaining moister. The products being dried in the dryer got the heat from both the sunlight and the collectors. They were completely protected from rain, animals, insects and the dried products are of high quality. However, the temperature of the drying air was varied between 35 - 75 oC, depends on the weather conditions.

  • Experimental studies on a parabolic-shaped solar tunnel dryer for Andrographis paniculata drying
    2012
Co-Authors: Nattapon Srisittipokakun, K. Kirdsiri, Jakrapong Kaewkhao
    Abstract:

Andrographis paniculata was dried using a parabolic-shaped solar tunnel dryer developed in the Faculty of Science and Technology, Nakhon Pathom Rajabhat University, Nakhon Pathom, Thailand. It is constructed with local materials, and then tested experimentally in food stuff drying Andrographis paniculata. With this dryer, 50kg of Andrographis paniculata can be dried within 4 hours. The dryer reduces drying losses as compared to sun drying and shows lower operational costs than the artificial drying. The color and the flavor of the food stuff dried with this dryer are comparable to that of a high- quality dried in markets. The dryer could be used for Andrographis paniculata of 80% (wb) moisture content, and they could be dried within 4 hours, with 0% (wb) remaining moister. The products being dried in the dryer got the heat from both the sunlight and the collectors. They were completely protected from rain, animals, insects and the dried products are of high quality. However, the temperature of the drying air was varied between 31 - 46 o C, depending on the weather conditions.

  • Testicular toxicity assesment of Andrographis paniculata dried extract in rats
    Journal of ethnopharmacology, 1997
    Co-Authors: Rafael A. Burgos, E.e. Caballero, Nury S. Sánchez, R.a. Schroeder, G.k. Wikman, Juan L. Hancke
    Abstract:

The possible testicular toxicity of Andrographis paniculata, Nees (Acanthaceae) standardized dried extract was evaluated in male Sprague Dawley rats for 60 days. No testicular toxicity was found with the treatment of 20, 200 and 1000 mg/kg during 60 days as evaluated by reproductive organ weight, testicular histology, ultrastructural analysis of Leydig cells and testosterone levels after 60 days of treatment. It is concluded that Andrographis paniculata dried extract did not produce subchronic testicular toxicity effect in male rats.

    Co-Authors: Guo Bei
    Abstract:

The progress of Andrographis paniculata in pharmacognosy, chemical component, pharmacology, clinical application, preparation, adverse reactions and so on was summarized. Its main components are diterpenes lipids and flavonoids, which have antimicrobial, antiviral, antitumorigenic, antiangiocardiopathy, antihepatoxic, immunoenhancement, anti-reproductive and other pharmacological effects. A further development of Andrographis paniculata should be made.
