The concept of affect plays a key role in nearly all frameworks developed to indicate and describe psychological phenomena in Freudian theory. Nevertheless, there is no unambiguous definition for affect, which leads us to consider it as one of the obscure marks in Freud’s psychoanalytic theory and, therefore, an aspect that requires full investigation, even in face of the several consummate advances and interpretations on the author’s work. The present work aims to track affect meanings presented in Freud’s early theory, as well as its implications on the comprehension about the origins of Neurosis. In order to accomplish those objectives, we have performed an epistemological on Freudian early work, employing textual and conceptual analysis tools for the purpose of enlightening its outlines, its projection lines and the articulation of theses among themselves. The use of the term affect will be investigated in the following texts: “Report on my Studies in Paris and Berlin” (1885-1886), “Observation of a severe case of hemianaesthesia in a hysterical male” (1886), Hysteria (1888), “Mental or psychic treatment” (1890),“Some points for a comparative study of organic and hysterical motor paralyses” (1893), “Extracts from the Fliess papers” (1892- 1899), “Studies in Hysteria” (1893-95), “The Defense Neuro-psychoses” (1894), Project for a scientific psychology (1950 [1895]), “Obsessions and Phobias” (1895), “The Justification for Detaching from Neurasthenia a Particular Symptom-Complex as “Anxiety Neurosis” ” (1895) e “ A Reply to Criticisms on the Anxiety Neurosis” (1895)

Suicide and Mortality Patterns in Anxiety Neurosis and Depressive Neurosis
Archives of general psychiatry, 1994Co-Authors: Christer AllgulanderAbstract:Background: The diverging views on suicide risk in patients with morbid Anxiety called for a sufficiently large study to estimate the suicide risk in patients with Anxiety Neurosis and depressive Neurosis. Methods: The identities of all 9912 patients with Anxiety Neurosis and all 38 529 patients with depressive Neurosis in the national Psychiatric Case Register in Sweden between 1973 and 1983, without any other psychiatric diagnoses, were matched with the national Cause-ofDeath Register. The observed causes of death among the 9910 patients who died in 1990 or earlier were compared with those expected in the general population. Results: There were 1481 determined and 265 undetermined suicides among the patients; ie, 18% of all deaths. The standardized mortality ratio of suicide before the age of 45 years among men and women with Anxiety Neurosis was 6.7 and 4.9, respectively; for depressive Neurosis, 12.6 and 15.7, respectively. The suicide risk was much higher within 3 months of leaving the hospital. Standardized mortality ratios of death caused by ischemic heart disease and traumatic injury were marginally elevated among men in both diagnostic groups. Women in both categories were at increased risk for death caused by alcohol abuse and cirrhosis of the liver. Obstructive pulmonary disease was another notable cause of death, reflecting the aggravation of Anxiety-depressive symptoms by airway obstruction or the effects of tobacco smoking. Conclusions: The risk of completed suicide among former inpatients with primary Anxiety Neurosis was higher than in previous, smaller studies and higher yet in patients with depressive Neurosis. This hazard may hopefully be reduced by optimizing immediate and longterm treatment for the severely affected.

Causes of death among 936 elderly patients with ‘pure’ Anxiety Neurosis in Stockholm County, Sweden, and in patients with depressive Neurosis or both diagnoses
Comprehensive Psychiatry, 1993Co-Authors: Christer Allgulander, Philip W. LavoriAbstract:Abstract The survival probability and distribution of causes of death were estimated among all 255 male and 685 female inpatients with "pure" Anxiety Neurosis in Stockholm County between 1969 and 1986 who had survived until 71 years of age. When controlling for sex, age, time period, and catchment area, we found three determined suicides among the men ( v 0.8 expected) and four suicides among the women ( v 1.1 expected). The shift in the distribution of causes of death was significant in women ( P = .024). There were 55 heart deaths among the men versus 46.1 expected. Among 2,331 patients with depressive Neurosis and among 1,641 patients with both Anxiety and depressive neuroses, suicides were more common than expected in both elderly men and women.

apigenin the anxiolytic constituent of turnera aphrodisiaca
Pharmaceutical Biology, 2006Co-Authors: Suresh Kumar, Anupam SharmaAbstract:AbstractTurnera aphrodisiaca. Ward (Turneraceae) has been traditionally used for the treatment of Anxiety Neurosis and as aphrodisiac, but no attempts have been made to investigate the plant systematically for its traditional claims. The current investigation was carried out ot isolate the bioactive constituent(s) from T. aphrodisiaca. using bioactivity-guided fractionation. AntiAnxiety activity-guided fractionation of methanol extract of the plant led to isolation of 5,7,4′ -trihydroxy flavone apigenin. Its structure was elucidated by UV and NMR data. Apigenin exhibited significant anxiolytic activity at a dose of 2 mg/kg, p.o., in mice using elevated plus maze model of Anxiety. It is concluded that apigenin is responsible for anxiolytic effects of this traditionally used plant.

anti Anxiety activity studies on homoeopathic formulations of turnera aphrodisiaca ward
Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2005Co-Authors: Suresh Kumar, Anupam SharmaAbstract:Turnera aphrodisiaca Ward (Turneraceae) has been traditionally used for the treatment of Anxiety Neurosis, and as an aphrodisiac. Mother tinctures (85% ethanol extracts) of T. aphrodisiaca have also been used for the treatment of central nervous system disorders. In the present investigation, T. aphrodisiaca mother tinctures formulated by three reputed manufacturers of homoeopathic medicines (NLK, DWSG and SBL) were evaluated for their anxiolytic activity. Dried mother tinctures of T. aphrodisiaca were subjected to anxiolytic activity evaluation at various doses, i.e. 50, 75, 100, 125 or 150 mg/kg p.o. in mice using elevated plus maze apparatus. Dried mother tinctures exhibited significant anxiolytic activity at 50 mg/kg (NLK), 75 mg/kg (DWSG) and 125 mg/kg (SBL), respectively, with reference to control as well as standard (diazepam, 2 mg/kg p.o.). Mother tinctures of T. aphrodisiaca available in the market, have significant anxiolytic activity. Amongst the three mother tinctures of T. aphrodisiaca analyzed, the dry residue of NLK possesses the highest amount of anxiolytic constituent(s). To ensure uniformity and consistency of biological effects in herbal formulations, these should be standardized on the basis of bioactive markers. The authors are actively involved in isolating the bioactive constituent(s) from T. aphrodisiaca so that the plant can be standardized on the basis of biologically active constituent(s).

anti Anxiety activity studies of various extracts of turnera aphrodisiacaward
Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy, 2005Co-Authors: Suresh Kumar, Anupam SharmaAbstract:Turnera aphrodisiacaWard (Turneraceae) has been used traditionally for treatment of Anxiety Neurosis and as an aphrodisiac. Yet, the plant has never been subjected to systematic biological investigation. In the present investigation, petroleum ether (60–80°C), chloroform, methanol, and water extracts of T. aphrodisiacaaerial parts were evaluated for anti-Anxiety activity in mice using elevated plus-maze apparatus. Among all the extracts, only methanol exhibited significant anti-Anxiety activity at a dose of 25 mg/kg with respect to control as well as standard (diazepam, 2 mg/kg). The bioactive methanol extract was shaken with petroleum ether, chloroform, and n-butyl alcohol, and all the shakings as well as the remaining methanol extract (RME) were further evaluated for anxiolytic activity. Butanol fraction and RME were found to exhibit anxiolytic activity in mice at the dose of 10 mg/kg and 75 mg/kg, respectively.

Hysteria: A Critical And Historical Review Of Its Concept [histeria: Uma Revisão Crítica E Histórica Do Seu Conceito]
2015Co-Authors: Gomes De Matos E., Gomes De Matos T.m.Abstract:The concept of hysteria has been modified several times troughout the history of Psychiatry. The aim of this paper is to present these modifications establishing a critical review of the concept of hysteria. The text was divided in three parts: a) since the beginning of the Greek medicine until Charcot's classical description, in the 19th century; b) Freud's ideas, which predominated until the 1980's; c) the modern age: the development of the classificatory systems, epidemiological researches and new psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic approaches.5414956Bleuler, E., (1967) Tratado de Psiquiatría, , Madrid: Espasa-Calpe S.
