    Co-Authors: Warolin Christian
    Abstract:

Denis Garanjon, privileged Apothecary, a victime of the plague in Paris, in the early 17th century – This article is about an Apothecary living in the Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris in the early 17th century. The plague was rife in Paris and decimated his family. The author refers to two works from the end of the 16th century that described how the plague was dealt with Traité de la peste by the famous Apothecary Nicolas Houel, and Traité de la peste by the great surgeon Ambroise Paré.
    'PERSEE Program', 2017
    Co-Authors: Warolin Christian
    Abstract:

The painting by Simon Vouet painter to Louis XIII in the Salle des Actes of the Pharmacy Faculty Paris V – The author confirms that the Apothecary Jacques Grégoire collaborated with Simon Vouet in the choice of the allegorical subject of this painting. He proposes a new interpretation of the work in sharp contrast to the one accepted up to now : «Polydamna, Queen of Egypt, and Helen of Troy, Queen of Sparta, offered to warriors the népenthès magical remedy that cures all pains.»L’auteur confirme la collaboration de l’apothicaire Jacques Grégoire avec Simon Vouet au choix du thème allégorique de ce tableau et propose une nouvelle interprétation de l’oeuvre en opposition totale avec la version adoptée jusqu’ici : «Polydamna, reine d’Egypte, et Hélène de Troie, reine de Sparte, offrent à des guerriers le népenthès remède magique dissipant tous les maux.»Warolin Christian.
    'PERSEE Program', 2016
    Co-Authors: Warolin Christian
    Abstract:

The apothecaries of the Saint-Honoré district of Paris in the 17th century. The apothecaries Antoine and Jacques Grégoire and Louis XIII’s first painter, Simon Vouet – This article presents the biographies of the apothecaries who lived in the Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris in the 17th century. Two major facts emerge from this study. The first concerns the formation of a family network involving the apothecaries and the royal artists. The apothecaries Antoine and Jacques Grégoire became allied with Simon Vouet, the first painter of Louis XIII . Links were also made between Antoine Grégoire and Jacques Sarazin, the King’s sculptor, and then with Michel Corneille, painter to the King. The famous painting by Simon Vouet hanging in the assembly hall of the Faculty of Pharmacy in Paris is probably the fruit of his collaboration with Jacques Grégoire, his brother-in-law and an erudite botanist. The other notable fact concerns the relations between Anne de Furnes, widow of Antoine Brulon, the rich Apothecary to the King Antoine Brulon, and Molière, both in Paris and in the village of Auteuil. The other notable fact concerns the relations between Anne de Furnes, widow of Antoine Brulon, the rich Apothecary to the King Antoine Brulon, and Molière, both in Paris and in the village of Auteuil. Warolin Christian. Abstract:

The union of three families of apothecaries in Paris in the 17th and 18th centuries. The apothecaries François Pihoué, François Regnault, Henry Charas and Marie Fourneau – The family network started with Marie Fourneau, daughter of the Apothecary Jacques Fourneau, married successively two apothecaries first François Pihoué and then François Regnault and whose only daughter Marie A nne married the Apothecary Henry Charas grandson of the famous Apothecary Moyse Charas.
    'PERSEE Program', 2020
    Co-Authors: Lafont Olivier
    Abstract:

Between Delft and Rouen, Apothecary jars from Lille – Apothecary jars manufactured in Lille were of two kinds. Some were inspired by jars from Delft. For this group, it is very difficult to identify Apothecary jars made in Lille from jars made in Tournai or Brussels or even made in Delft. Others imitated jars from Rouen, in that case it is difficult to identify jars made in Lille from jars made in Rouen, La Rochelle, or even Paris. Only a few signed pieces could be attributed unambiguously to Rouen.
    'PERSEE Program', 2019
    Co-Authors: Lafont Olivier
    Abstract:

The Geoffroy : a family of Parisian apothecaries – The Geoffroy family, on six generations, counted seven apothecaries, three Paris aldermen ; four of its members belonged to the Royal Academy of Sciences. Some characters stand out of the crowd, apart from Étienne-François, the author of the Table of Affinities, who has a special position in history of sciences, his father Matthieu François who had the opportunity to meet Louis XIV many times, or his brother, Claude Joseph who was at the same time, an Apothecary, a Paris alderman, an Academy member and a collector. Lafont Olivier. Abstract:

Gromaire and Pharmacy – In 1937, the French government decided to offer to the Faculty of Pharmacy of Paris, a series of paintings by Marcel Gromaire. This painter, knowing nothing about Pharmacy, collected information concerning pharmacy before realising five great paintings : “ the Alchemist”, “ the Apothecary”, “ the Chemist”, “ Medical Zoology” and “ Medicinal Plants”. In all these paintings it was possible to analyse the references to Pharmacy and to detect the sources, which inspired the author.
    'PERSEE Program', 2017
    Co-Authors: Lafont Olivier
    Abstract:

Two books printed in Strasburg during the 16th century present in the inventory of the Paris College of Pharmacy Library – The catalogue of the College of Pharmacy Library, written in 1780, mentioned two books printed in Strasburg during the 16th century. The first one was a Latin edition of PΠερι Υλης Ιατριχης of Dioscorides. The drop caps are enriched by the figuration of episodes from the Bible. The principal interest of this book comes from the identity of his donator, Ioannes Du Boys, Apothecary of the Duke of Alençon, the brother of King Henry III. This Apothecary was also the author of a pharmacopoeia entitled Methodus Miscendorum Medicamentorum. The second one was a compendium of various titles, which had, most of them, in common to have been written by Valerius Cordus. It contains many illustrations and some of them are especially expressive. Its main interest is nevertheless to be a part of a gift made by a group of Parisian apothecaries, in 1570. This gift is considered as the birth of apothecaries’ library, the direct ancestor of actual “BIU Santé pole Pharmacy”. The presence of these two books in the library constitutes a testimony of the importance of printers from Strasburg in history.
    'PERSEE Program', 2016
    Co-Authors: Simon Lorène, Lafont Olivier
    Abstract:

The complex travel of cinchona barks between Peru and Québec Hôtel-Dieu, in the middle of the eighteenth century – Duplessis sisters, who were religious nuns in Hôtel-Dieu (Quebec hospital), were exchanging letters with a French Apothecary from Dieppe in Normandy, named Jacques-Tranquilain Féret. They asked him to send them in Quebec the drugs and medicines their Apothecary needed. Amongst these drugs were cinchona barks that came from Callao in Peru by boat, passed Cape Horn and then sailed to Cadiz, the great Spanish port. Then they embarked to Rouen, which was the French port for goods coming from overseas. The goods from Peru had then to be transported on little fishing boats to Dieppe, where Féret received the barks. The Apothecary sent these drugs to Quebec by boats sailing either from Rouen or from La Rochelle. So these Peruvian drugs had to cross two times the Ocean before accessing to North America.
    'OpenEdition', 2017
    Co-Authors: Vidonne Florence
    Abstract:

From 1720, André-Hercule de Fleury, the lord abbot of Tournus, had a ‘charity house’ built in his town for the accommodation and care of valid indigents and orphans. The Apothecary store of this establishment, forgotten since the nineteenth century, was rediscovered and restored in the 1980s. In 2010, after the decision to sell this charity hospital (property of the local hospital), the town of Tournus, in agreement with the hospital and the regional cultural authorities, agreed to move the collection to the Hôtel-Dieu-Greuze Museum in the centre of town. The collection did not enjoy any historic monument protection and it was consequently a private sponsor who financed this move in 2011. In the visit, the Apothecary store has been installed in one of the rooms of the Greuze museum, not far from another Apothecary, created at the Hôtel-Dieu in 1685. The public can thus compare two extremely rare decorative ensembles, coming from different periods and with different spirits
