There are numerous other message passing characteristics that can have a dramatic effect on Application performance that should be analyzed when evaluating a new interconnect. One such metric is overhead, which dictates the networks ability to allow the Application to perform non-message passing work while a transfer is taking place. A method for measuring overhead, and hence calculating Application Availability, is presented. Results for several next-generation network interfaces are also presented.

PDCAT - Improving Application Availability in Wireless Sensor Networks with Energy-Harvesting Capability

We propose algorithms that take into account the energy consumption rate of agents as well as energy reserves and harvesting rate of nodes, and decide about the migration of agents in order to improve Application Availability. Initial evaluation results via simulation show that Application Availability can be greatly improved compared to having a static Application placement.

Research on key techniques in passive optical networks and optical grid Applications
2012Co-Authors: Min ZhuAbstract:The bandwidth-intensive Applications, such as interactive video and multimedia services, have further increased the demand of bandwidth. Thus wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is viewed as a promising candidate to realize the next generation optical access networks due to its dedicated bandwidth for each subscriber and more flexible bandwidth management. The first half of this thesis will cover three technologies in a WDM-PON, including multicast overlay scheme, automatic protection switching scheme and tunable Fabry-Pérot laser diode (FP-LD) self-seeding scheme. In the second half of the thesis, WDM optical network is utilized as a virtual computing environment, which connects widely distributed computing resources to support large-scale scientific, engineering or commercial computing Applications. It is so called “optical Grid” systems. Grid Applications may range from the simple transfer of a large data set to the complex execution of a collection of interdependent tasks. However, for such a system involving many heterogeneous computing and network resources, faults seem to be inevitable. This thesis will also address the issue of maximizing grid Application Availability in real-time optical Grid systems through resource-fault-tolerant scheduling techniques.

ICC - Availability-Aware Joint Task Scheduling for Real-Time Distributed Computing Applications over Optical Networks

GellerAbstract:The integrated computing system optical network has been viewed as a promising platform to support real-time distributed computing Applications. For such a system involving so many heterogeneous computing and network resources, faults seem to be inevitable. Therefore, a fault-tolerant scheme is necessary to improve the Availability of the integrated system. However, existing joint task scheduling schemes for real-time distributed computing Applications generally do not consider the Application Availability issues when making scheduling decisions. In this paper, we develop an Availability-aware joint task scheduling (AAJTS) scheme, by both taking into account Availability improvement and timing requirements. The proposed scheme iteratively enhances the Application Availability under deadline constraint to protect data communication tasks from network link failures. Extensive simulations demonstrate the effectiveness and the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

WORDS - Portal replication for Web Application Availability via SOAP

(WORDS 2003)., 1Co-Authors: Simon Woodman, Graham Morgan, Simon ParkinAbstract:The interoperability of SOAP (Simple Access Object Protocol) has eased the provision of B2B (business to business) solutions where Web Applications (Web form submission via browser) are only suitable for supporting B2C (business to client). As many services exist that are delivered to clients via Web Applications, enabling the delivery of such services via SOAP to provide B2B solutions is desirable. One mechanism for achieving this is via the use of portals. A portal may provide clients with a single point of access to geographically distributed services and tailor such services to satisfy client requirements. As a single point of access to many services, a portal may present a single point of failure. The provision of fault-tolerant portals may be viewed as essential by an organization. This paper describes a portal suitable for exhibiting Web Applications as SOAP-based services and presents an approach for replicating portals to overcome the problem of a portal representing a single point of failure.
