r as a lingua franca advantages of using r for quantitative research in Applied Linguistics
Applied Linguistics, 2016Co-Authors: Atsushi Mizumoto, Luke PlonskyAbstract:In this article, we suggest that using R, a statistical software environment, is advantageous for quantitative researchers in Applied Linguistics. We first provide a brief overview of the reasons why R is popular among researchers in other fields and why we recommend its use for analyses in Applied Linguistics. In order to illustrate these benefits, we report recent works and developments in quantitative data analysis seeking to move the field toward more appropriate practices, many of which take advantage of the flexibility and functionality of R. Finally, in order to facilitate the use of R, we also introduce an R-based web application developed by the first author.

an a z of Applied Linguistics research methods
2015Co-Authors: Shawn Loewen, Luke PlonskyAbstract:It is often difficult to reconcile, for example, the distinct epistemological stances of quantitative and qualitative approaches (see findings of Hashemi & Babaii's, 2013, systematic review of mixed methods research in Applied Linguistics).

bootstrapping in Applied Linguistics assessing its potential using shared data
Applied Linguistics, 2014Co-Authors: Luke Plonsky, Jesse Egbert, Geoffrey T LaflairAbstract:Parametric analyses such as t tests and ANOVAs are the norm—if not the default—statistical tests found in quantitative Applied Linguistics research (Gass 2009). Applied statisticians and one Applied linguist (Larson-Hall 2010, 2012; Larson-Hall and Herrington 2010), however, have argued that this approach may not be appropriate for small samples and/or nonnormally distributed data (e.g. Wilcox 2003), both common in second language (L2) research. They recommend instead ‘robust statistics’ such as bootstrapping, a nonparametric procedure that randomly resamples from an observed data set to produce a simulated but more stable and statistically accurate outcome. The present study tests the usefulness of bootstrapping by reanalyzing raw data from 26 studies of Applied Linguistics research. Our results found no evidence of Type II error (false negative). However, 4 out of 16 statistically significant results were not replicated (i.e. a Type I error ‘misfit’ five times higher than an alpha of .05). We discuss empirically justified suggestions for the use of bootstrapping in the context of broader methodological issues and reforms in Applied Linguistics (see Plonsky 2013, 2014).

second language acquisition Applied Linguistics and the teaching of foreign languages
Language Learning Journal, 2003Co-Authors: Claire KramschAbstract:Given the current popularity of second language acquisition (SLA) as a research base for the teaching and learning of foreign languages in educational settings, it is appropriate to examine the relationship of SLA to other relevant areas of inquiry, such as foreign language education, foreign language methodology, and Applied Linguistics. This article makes the argument that Applied Linguistics, as the interdisciplinary field that mediates between the theory and the practice of language acquisition and use, is the overarching field that includes SLA and SLA-related domains of research. Applied Linguistics brings to all levels of foreign language study not only the research done in SLA proper, but also the research in stylistics, language socialisation, and critical Applied Linguistics that illuminates the teaching of a foreign language as sociocultural practice, as historical practice, and as social semiotic practice.

Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics: A Bibliometric Portrait of Ten Publication Years
2021Co-Authors: Syahid AbdulAbstract:Bibliometric portraits of a single journal appear to be rarely taken in the field of Applied Linguistics. Viewed from the angles of publication, citation, and indexation, one of the journals worth a bibliometric portrait is the Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics. Casting local and regional concerns on the global Applied Linguistics, the journal has ranked among the big five Open Access Journals in the Asiatic region since its foundation in 2011.Comment: 23 pages, 4 tables, 9 figure

Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics: A Bibliometric Portrait of Ten Publication Years
DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 2021Co-Authors: Syahid AbdulAbstract:Bibliometric portraits of a single journal appear to be rarely taken in the field of Applied Linguistics. Viewed from the angles of publication, citation, and indexation, one of the journals worth a bibliometric portrait is the Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics. Casting local and regional concerns on the global Applied Linguistics, the journal has ranked among the big five Open Access Journals in the Asiatic region since its foundation in 2011. Capturing a corpus of 426 documents by 824 authors from 144 organizations through two free bibliometric tools, i.e. Publish or Perish and VOSviewer, this study portrays the journal from 2011 to 2020 through the lens of Microsoft Academic, one of the largest yet free academic search engines and bibliographic databases. The portrait exhibits the journal’s scientific productivity and quality, including the most prolific authors and their affiliations. It also depicts the co-authorship, keyword co-occurrence, self-citation, and bibliographic coupling. How some aspects such as the relative dominance of authors from the university publishing house has evolved before and after the Scopus indexation provide a more vivid portrait of the journal. It could provide not only retrospective but also prospective insights into the ongoing contribution of the journal to the big enterprise of Applied Linguistics

eye tracking a guide for Applied Linguistics research
2018Co-Authors: Kathy Conklin, Ana Pellicersanchez, Gareth CarrolAbstract:Eye-tracking is quickly becoming a valuable tool in Applied Linguistics research as it provides a 'real-time', direct measure of cognitive processing effort. This book provides a straightforward introduction to the technology and how it might be used in language research. With a strong focus on the practicalities of designing eye-tracking studies that achieve the standard of other well-established experimental techniques, it provides valuable information about building and designing studies, touching on common challenges and problems, as well as solutions. Importantly, the book looks at the use of eye-tracking in a wide variety of Applied contexts including reading, listening and multi-modal input, writing, testing, corpus Linguistics, translation, stylistics, and computer-mediated communication. Each chapter finishes with a simple checklist to help researchers use eye-tracking in a wide variety of language studies. Discussion is grounded in concrete examples, which will allow users coming to the technology for the first time to gain the knowledge and confidence to use it to produce high quality research.

using eye tracking in Applied Linguistics and second language research
Second Language Research, 2016Co-Authors: Kathy Conklin, Ana PellicersanchezAbstract:With eye-tracking technology the eye is thought to give researchers a window into the mind. Importantly, eye-tracking has significant advantages over traditional online processing measures: chiefly that it allows for more ‘natural’ processing as it does not require a secondary task, and that it provides a very rich moment-to-moment data source. In recognition of the technology’s benefits, an ever increasing number of researchers in Applied Linguistics and second language research are beginning to use it. As eye-tracking gains traction in the field, it is important to ensure that it is established in an empirically sound fashion. To do this it is important for the field to come to an understanding about what eye-tracking is, what eye-tracking measures tell us, what it can be used for, and what different eye-tracking systems can and cannot do. Further, it is important to establish guidelines for designing sound research studies using the technology. The goal of the current review is to begin to address these issues.
