Design behaviors : programming the material world for responsive architecture
Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2020Co-Authors: Markopoulos AretiAbstract:The advances of material science, coupled with computation and digital technologies, and applied to the Architectural Discipline have brought to life unprecedented possibilities for the design and making of responsive, collectively created and intelligent environments. Over the last two decades, research and applications of novel active materials, together with digital technologies such as Ubiquitous Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, and Artificial Intelligence, have introduced a model of Materially Responsive Architecture that presents unique possibilities for designing novel performances and behaviors of the Architectural Beyond the use of mechanical systems, sensors, actuators or wires, often plugged into traditional materials to animate space, this dissertation proves that matter itself, can be the agent to achieve monitoring, reaction or adaptation with no need of any additional mechanics, electrical or motorized systems. Materials, therefore, become bits and information uniting with the digital world, while computational processes, such as algorithmic control, circular feedback, input or output, both drive and are driven by the morphogenetic capacities of matter, uniting, therefore, with the material world. Through the applications and implications of Materially Responsive Architecture we are crossing a threshold in design where physicality follows and reveals information through time and through dynamic configurations. Design is not limited to a finalised form but rather associated to a performance, where the final formal outcome consists in a series of animated and organic topologies rather than static geometries and structures. This new paradigm, is referred to, in this thesis, as the Design Behaviors paradigm (in the double sense of "behaviors of design" and "designing behaviors"), and is characterized by unique exchanges and dialogues between users and the environment, facilitated by the conjunction of human, material and computational intelligence. Buildings, objects and spaces are able to reconfigure themselves, in both atomic and macro scale, to support environmental changes and users' needs, behavioral and occupational patterns. At the same time the Design Behaviors paradigm places not only matter and the environment at the center of design and morphogenesis, but also the users, that become active participants of their built environment and play the final creative role. This paradigm shift, boosts new relations among the human's perception and body and the inhabited space. The new design paradigm is also a new cultural one, in which statics, repetition and Cartesian grids, traditionally related with safety, orientation and comfort, give way to motion, unpredictability and organic principles of evolution. Materially Responsive Architecture and the Design Behaviors paradigm define uniquely enhanced "environments" and "ecologies" where human, nature, artifice and technology collectively and evolutionally co-exist within a framework of increased consciousness and awareness. This thesis argues that, while there is no doubt that our future cities will consist in an extensive layer of distributed sensors, actuators and digital interfaces, they will also consist in an additional layer of novel materials, that are dynamic and soft, rather than rigid and hard, able to sense as sensors, actuate as motors, and be programmed as a software. The new materiality of our cities relies on the advances of material science, coupled with the cybernetic and computational power, and can be actuated by the environment to change states (Re-Active Matter), can be controlled by the users to respond (Co-Active Matter), and eventually can be designed and programmed to learn and evolve as living organisms do (Self-Active Matter). The physical space of the city is, thus, the seamless intertwining of digital and material content, becoming an active agent in the dynamic relationship between the environment and humans.

Història, semiologia i etimologia. Col·lecció, eina i pensament. Teoria, ciutat i projecte. Conversa, dialèctica i retòrica. The present research work develops, from the understanding of the essay as an indispensable tool when making criticism, a concrete approach to architecture competitions. With this pretext, in order to deepen the appreciation of the subject, it rubs elbows with a considerable number of contemporary topics raised from the heart of the Architectural Discipline. From the scale, so often immeasurable, of the collectivity present in society to that so intimate referred to the creative processes that take place in the imagination of the artist. At first, from a lateral approach, some appreciations are built that revisit those approaches that usually serve as introductions. History, semiology and etymology. Secondly, from the complete conformation of a compilation of proposals of competitions celebrated in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, an atlas is created. This serves as a foundation for each speculation that is generated during the rest of the investigation. Collection, tool and thought. Next, the main section of the thesis is resolved in three main categories. These play the role of classifying, characterizing and ordering the set of essays displayed. Theory, city and project. Finally, some fictitious dialogues are conceived, deliberately created from the warned position of those who need to denounce and highlight the need for debate on some contemporary issues. Conversation, dialectics and rhetoric. As a whole, the approach has the primary objective of generating, conclusively, some reflections that can question the thoughts already established in our heritage, reaffirm them in the pertinent cases, introduce us to revolutionary notions, or allow us to generate new ones ourselves

"El Bello Dibujo". Exposiciones y Enseñanza de Arquitectura en España, 197x-199x
Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra, 2019Co-Authors: Álvarez M.Abstract:Architectural drawing exhibitions framed the cultural and Architectural debate in the 1970s and 1980s. In Spain, this interest developed in parallel with a renewal of the Schools of Architecture that was taking place during the process of democratization of the country. The new curriculums aimed to confront the pedagogical crisis attributed to the education policies approved during the technocratic period of Franquism. In this sense, the teaching of drawing would be, on the one hand, the result of the international contemporary context of the critique of modernity, and on the other, the possible solution to a highly technified pedagogy of architecture. The numerous Architectural drawing shows and publications constructed a new “drawing ambience” that brought to the foreground not only questions about the status of Architectural drawing within the Architectural Discipline, but also the more crucial debate on the status of the professional architect.

----------ABSTRACT---------- In the early morning of April 10th 1944, Rudolf Vbra and Alfred Wetzler escaped from Auschwitz IIBirkenau concentration and extermination camp. They had remained hidden under a pile of wooden slats for more than three days, during that time they became completely invisible and unnoticeable, having smeared their bodies and the hiding place with chewing tobacco that they had dried in gasoline. This simple but very sensitive gesture made their escape possible because it confused the sense of smell of more than two hundred dogs, who were trained by the Nazi guards and went in search of the men once their disappearance had been confirmed. This successful escape put into practice a form of architecture that does not constitute a built object but rather arises by operating spatially using the smell. That is to say; an invisible and immaterial sensation becomes the protagonist and constitutive axis of what has been called the architecture of resistance. This form of architecture must be understood as the reaction of hypersensitive bodies when faced with forces of oppressive and alienating contexts, in which there is a sensitivity towards small perceptions –usually underestimated by the Architectural Discipline itself–. This thesis will focus on the afore-described concept and will deem it absolutely necessary to follow a theoretical-practical method led by a drawing capable of complementing and detailing the contents of such particular types of architecture. Now then, how can one draw a type of architecture that is not characterized by its forms, but by the development of the forces and sensations of the bodies that build it? The answer is using narrative cartographies. This operative concept reveals the main objective of the research: to use cartography and cartographying in order to make visible, to claim and to promote not only the sensitive condition of architecture but also the types of architecture that are born from its sensitive condition. An example of this is that escape, which was only possible by confusing the meticulous sense of smell of a group of dogs trained to find any fugitive from the camp. Based on this, two lines flow and overlap throughout the research on the concept of cartography. The first forms the conceptual apparatus that integrates and qualifies this cartographic notion from the interaction of three fields: Deleuzian and Foucaultian philosophy; radical geography with its maps at the resistance’s service; and Architectural trends that, beyond thinking and drawing contours or figures, are interested in bodies, sensations and contextual forces. The second line is devoted to the production of narrative cartographies in extremely complex territories in order to show the relevance, possibilities and limitations of the cartographic method, which is evidenced through two major case studies. On the one hand, the precise spatial knowledge exhibited in the cartographies of Bhadra Plaza and its surroundings –the most problematic district of Ahmedabad in India– allows us to address the area’s conflict based on processes, programs and projects concerned with dignifying the life of those who live beyond the norm and what is regulated. On the other hand, the meticulous descriptions narrated by Auschwitz II-Birkenau’s survivors make it possible to map the resistances perpetrated in the concentration camp from what a body feels, can and builds. These extreme situations show us a barrack that was a school, a revolt in the crematoria, and, finally, the escape of Rudolf Vbra and Alfred Wetzler. All these narrative cartographies will help us to delve into the sensitive condition that constitutes the very complex and conflictive architectures of resistance

Architects and artists used photography as a tool for creating and analyzing architecture. This postulate is the basis of this thesis project whose general purpose is the contribution of photographic experiences in Architectural thinking. Here, the notion of photographic experience is used in a sense comparable to the artistic experience defined by the philosopher John Dewey. Dewey understood the experience of an art as an educational tool to learn to think and develop a critical sense. Experience was for him a way to aesthetically approach the world and understand it outside a strictly scientific framework. If historians have already traced the history of photographic experiments of architects, including Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Stirling and, also, have identified the roles of photography in the construction of their respective Architectural thinking, the origins of photographic experiments by renowned architect, artist and theorist Melvin Charney and their contributions in the progressive construction of his thought have not been clearly circumscribed. The specific purpose of this thesis is, consequently, to clarify the surrounding of Charney's photographic experiences and offer a broader understanding of their contributions in the history of his Architectural thinking. Charney's motifs and influences in his photographic experiments and reflections on photography were identified through an investigation into his personal archives held at the Canadian Center for Architecture and the analysis of the content of documents that he produced before and during his studies in architecture. In particular, ramifications in Charney's work of photographic experiments of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Erich Mendelsohn, James Stirling, Walker Evans and Edward Ruscha have been revealed. Finally, partly thanks to the contributions of his photographic experiences, Charney learned from the built environment and to think about the built environment. More specifically, this study demonstrates that working with photography Charney has learned to analyze what is already there to better understand the origin of built forms. Also, photography was for him a tool for the critical figuration of the built environment, for the re-evaluation of the bases of the Architectural Discipline and, moreover, for the critical teaching of architecture. More broadly, this thesis contributes to the knowledge of artistic production as a research strategy in the Disciplines of architecture and environmental design and to the essential recognition of other experiences, between art and architecture, as catalyst of a critical Architectural thinking
