  • An Artifact Modeling approach for developing integrated engineering systems
    Building and Environment, 1992
    Co-Authors: Sivand Lakmazaheri, William Rasdorf
    Abstract:

Abstract Engineering problem solving can be viewed as a transformation process in which the initial description of an engineering system (Artifact) transforms to its final description. This paper presents a single yet powerful approach for Modeling engineering Artifacts. The approach involves using (1) a symbolic language for representing engineering Artifacts in terms of objects and relations and (2) a mechanical strategy for manipulating engineering Artifacts. The approach provides a common platform for Modeling different phases of the engineering problem solving process, thus facilitating system integration.

  • ES - Business Artifact Modeling: A Framework for Business Artifacts in Traditional Database Systems
    2014 Enterprise Systems Conference, 2014
Co-Authors: Harry Raymond Joseph, Youakim Badr
    Abstract:

We introduce a comprehensive framework for the deployment of business Artifacts in commercial lines - in the day-to-day running of businesses. The solution is easily scalable from small-scale businesses to large-scale enterprises. An attempt is made to describe Artifacts within the familiar database querying tools. As a specific example, we attempt the Artifact description, through MySQL workbench. A reputed open-source tool - MySQL workbench is used for Modeling Artifacts, by fitting our understanding of Artifacts and mapping them to the corresponding tools available on workbench. We also develop a novel language that is centric to Artifact processing - BASQL. The developed syntax and a few applications of the new language are shown in this work. The BASQL syntax provides easy, intuitive, non-technical and very high-level syntax for use by business professionals. The integration of business Artifacts with analytics and intelligence tools using the developed framework is mentioned.

  • verifiable uml Artifact centric business process models
Conference on Information and Knowledge Management, 2014
Co-Authors: Diego Calvanese, Marco Montali, Montserrat Estanol, Ernest Teniente
    Abstract:

Artifact-centric business process models have gained increasing momentum recently due to their ability to combine structural (i.e., data related) with dynamical (i.e., process related) aspects. In particular, two main lines of research have been pursued so far: one tailored to business Artifact Modeling languages and methodologies, the other focused on the foundations for their formal verification. In this paper, we merge these two lines of research, by showing how recent theoretical decidability results for verification can be fruitfully transferred to a concrete UML-based Modeling methodology. In particular, we identify additional steps in the methodology that, in significant cases, guarantee the possibility of verifying the resulting models against rich first-order temporal properties. Notably, our results can be seamlessly transferred to different languages for the specification of the Artifact lifecycles.
