    Abstract:

    The chemical composition of the essential oil of Rollinia sericea (R.E.Fr.) R.E.Fr. leaves was determined by GC and GC/MS analysis. The analysis revealed the presence mainly of sesquiterpenes: beta-elemene (10%), beta-caryophyllene (10.0%), Bicyclogermacrene (9.1%), germacrene-D (8.2%), bicycloelemene (6.2%) and (Z)-nerolidol (5.3%). Rollinia sericea oil was able to inhibit the growth of both fungi Aspergillus niger (16404) and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) as well as the Gram-positive bacterium Staphyloccocus aureus (ATCC 6538) but it was inactive against the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027)

    The chemical composition and the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil from Croton heterocalyx leaves were evaluated. The oil which was analyzed by GC and GUMS was found to contain germacrene D (12.5%), Bicyclogermacrene (11.2%), delta-elemene (9.2%) beta-elemene (8.2%), spathulenol (6.9%), linalool (5.4%) and 1,8-cineole (3.7%) its major components. Croton. heterocalyx oil displayed a high inhibitory activity against the fungi Aspergillus niger (16404) and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231.) as well its the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), hut a very weak activity was observed for the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027)

    The essential oil obtained from leaves and stem barks of the Southern Brazilian native Drimys brasiliensis Miers, a tree with medicinal properties, was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC/mass spectrometry (MS). The oil was characterized by sesquiterpenoids (66%), cyclocolorenone being the most abundant (30.4%), followed by Bicyclogermacrene (11.8%) and alpha-gurjunene (6.0%). Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the toxicity of the essential oil on larvae of the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus by the larval immersion test. It was observed that the oil was lethal, killing 100% of the larvae of both ticks at the doses of 25, 12.5, and 6.25 µl/ml. The lowest dose tested, 3.125 µl/ml, was also toxic, killing 95–98% of the larvae.

    Abstract The essential oils obtained from Southern Brazilian native Drimys brasiliensis Miers and Drimys angustifolia Miers were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The oils from leaves of both species showed predominance of monoterpenoids, while the oils from stem barks were characterized by sesquiterpenoids. Bicyclogermacrene (20.0% in leaves and 25.4% in stem bark) and drimenol (1.4% in leaves and 26.2% in stem bark) were the most abundant in D. angustifolia, and cyclocolorenone (from 16.0% to 32.3% in fresh and dried leaves and almost 50% in stem bark) in D. brasiliensis . The oil from fruits of D. brasiliensis was also analyzed and presented 31.0% of cyclocolorenone. The predominance of this unusual aromadendrane-type sesquiterpene in D. brasiliensis essential oils could be used as a chemosystematic marker.

    Essential oils from M. richardiana, M. arborescens, M. selloi, M. oligantha, M. rostrata, M. lajeana, M. obtecta, M. pubipetala and M. hatschbachii were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Sixty-seven compounds have been identified ranging from 90-99% of the oil contents. All analyzed species were rich in cyclic sesquiterpenes (66-99%), mainly those from the cadinane, caryophyllane and germacrane cyclization pathway, among them b-caryophyllene, germacrene D, Bicyclogermacrene, d-cadinene, spathulenol, caryophyllene oxide, globulol and a-cadinol.     Abstract:

    GC/FID and GC–MS analysis revealed germacrene D, Bicyclogermacrene, α-cadinol and cubenol as major compounds from aril. Germacrene D, Bicyclogermacrene, trans-caryophyllene and δ-elemene are major compounds in fruits. Germacrene D, spathulenol, trans-caryophyllene and caryophyllene oxide are major compounds in leaves. Furthermore, multivariate analysis revealed distinct groups between the composition of essential oils from aril and fruit, when compared with terpene production found in leaves. Lipid composition found in arils could be protected by the presence of non-oxygenated sesquiterpenes, as germacrene D and Bicyclogermacrene. Chemical profiles of essential oils from the fruits, arils and leaves of Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. revealed different compositions, which could be related to environmental pressures.
