    Abstract It has been found that during heterotrophic denitrification, Biocenosis of the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor is composed of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and rotifers. Among these groups of organisms close ecological relationships exist. The scheme of these relationships is proposed.     Abstract:

    The Atacama Desert is the driest non-polar desert on Earth, presenting precarious conditions for biological activity. In the arid coastal belt, life is restricted to areas with fog events that cause almost daily wet-dry cycles. In such an area, we discovered a hitherto unknown and unique ground covering Biocenosis dominated by lichens, fungi, and algae attached to grit-sized (~6 mm) quartz and granitoid stones. Comparable Biocenosis forming a kind of a layer on top of soil and rock surfaces in general is summarized as cryptogamic ground covers (CGC) in literature. In contrast to known CGC from arid environments to which frequent cyclic wetting events are lethal, in the Atacama Desert every fog event is answered by photosynthetic activity of the soil community and thus considered as the desert's breath. Photosynthesis of the new CGC type is activated by the lowest amount of water known for such a community worldwide thus enabling the unique Biocenosis to fulfill a variety of ecosystem services. In a considerable portion of the coastal Atacama Desert, it protects the soil from sporadically occurring splash erosion and contributes to the accumulation of soil carbon and nitrogen as well as soil formation through bio-weathering. The structure and function of the new CGC type are discussed, and we suggest the name grit-crust. We conclude that this type of CGC can be expected in all non-polar fog deserts of the world and may resemble the cryptogam communities that shaped ancient Earth. It may thus represent a relevant player in current and ancient biogeochemical cycling.

    Abstract:

    It has been found that yeasts and yeast-like microorganisms are stable constituents of activated sludge Biocenosis treating municipal wastewaters with a mixture of different industrial wastewaters at B upsilon values in the range of 1.3-1.7 kg COD m-3day-1 and B chi = 0.22-0.42 kg COD kg-1day-1. The number of these microorganisms reached about 10(4) cells mg VSS-1 and as typical species Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida famata can be considered. Considerably less numerous (4-8 cells mg VSS-1) was the mycoflora of high loaded treatment systems of petrochemical wastewaters (B upsilon = 10.3-14.1 kg COD m-3day-1 and B chi = 1.06-1.92 kg COD kg-1day-1) and municipal wastewaters with a mixture of aromatic amines (B upsilon = 1200-2400 mg COD l-1 day-1 and B chi = 0.43-0.94 mg COD mg-1day-1). Typical species for these sludges were Geotrichum candidum, G.klebahnii, G.sericeum, Trichosporon cutaneum and Sporobolomyces lactosus.

    Abstract:

    During denitrification carried out in the presence of methanol, glycerol, acetic and lactic acids as a C-source, the microbial growth parameters such as: maximum attainable biomass production (Px max), “optimal” biomass residence time (Θx), biomass yield coefficients (YN and YC) and specific biomass loss rate constants (bN and bC) were estimated. Also, the following process parameters: maximum attainable biomass N and C removal rates (ΔBx, Nmax and ΔBx, Cmax) and corresponding rate constants (KBx, N and KBx, C) were calculated. The values of these parameters were interpreted in relation to the chemical structure of the C-sources for denitrification and degree of their assimilability by the bacteria and fungi which dominated in biocenoses.
