SECRYPT - Biometrics privacy: Technologies and applications

The main reason for such an interest is that biometric features of individuals are tightly bound with their identities. Moreover, they cannot be easily forgotten or lost. Therefore they provide significant potentials in applications where both security and client convenience are needed. A serious concern in the design and use of biometric authentication systems is the privacy protection of the information derived from human biometric traits, especially since such traits cannot be replaced. The goal is to secure the biometric data and prevent improper access and abuse of biometric information. Some techniques have been proposed in addition to conventional cryptography, by combining cryptography and Biometrics to allow for building protection in the biometric templates themselves. These solutions can increase the confidence in biometric systems when biometric information is stored for verification, even though some critical aspects must be addressed properly to ensure their usability with real Biometrics in real-world applications. This keynote speech introduces the Biometrics technologies and applications with specific emphasis on a comprehensive system design methodology which takes into account the need for privacy protection among the application requirements. Privacy-aware multimodal biometric system and modular structured schemes are presented to adapt the solution to the application requirements. Recent results are discussed.

uncoupling Biometrics from templates for secure and privacy preserving authentication

However, only very few systems succeed in effectively combining highly secure user authentication with an adequate privacy protection of the biometric templates, due to the difficulty associated with jointly providing good authentication performance, unlinkability and irreversibility to biometric templates. This thwarts the use of Biometrics in remote authentication scenarios, despite the advantages that this kind of architectures provides. We propose a user-specific approach for decoupling the Biometrics from their binary representation before using biometric protection schemes based on fuzzy extractors. This allows for more reliable, flexible, irreversible and unlinkable protected biometric templates. With the proposed Biometrics decoupling procedures, biometric metadata, that does not allow to recover the original biometric template, is generated. However, different biometric metadata that are generated starting from the same biometric template remain statistically linkable, therefore we propose to additionally protect these using a second authentication factor (e.g., knowledge or possession based). We demonstrate the potential of this approach within a two-factor authentication protocol for remote biometric authentication in mobile scenarios.

It is unlikely that any individual biometric modality operating alone will completely meet all the desirable criteria for a given task, especially when the variety of issues that are needed are considered in any practical situation. To improve system performance different systems can be used such as adding extra power using a multiclassifier configuration, increasing flexibility using multimodal systems, and using soft Biometrics as additional identity evidence. Resistance to ‘spoofing’ attacks, biometric data integrity, and extending the application domains for Biometrics-based processing are also considered.

Predictive Biometrics has expanded considerably in recent years, with the two most frequently studied characteristics being age and gender using, for example, biometric iris data. Recent studies are taking predictive Biometrics further still, aiming to predict so-called ‘higher level’ individual characteristics, such as those which reflect an individual’s mental or emotional state.

Biometrics and identity fraud protection: Two barriers to realizing the benefits of Biometrics – A chain perspective on Biometrics, and identity fraud – Part II

A recent decision of the Dutch government is mentioned aiming at an identity fraud resistant use of biometric passports. Instead of relying on the fingerprint on the identity document, other fingerprints stored in a separate database will be used when checking someone's identity with fingerprint Biometrics. In Part II discussion continues on the value chain perspective in Biometrics, identity fraud as biometric's major challenge and an overall strategy for identity fraud resistant Biometrics.

Two barriers to realizing the benefits of Biometrics: a chain perspective on Biometrics and identity fraud as Biometrics' real challenge

We need to exploit this variety to manoeuvre Biometrics into place to be able to realise its social potential. Subsequently, two perspectives on Biometrics are proposed revealing that Biometrics will probably be ineffective in combating identity fraud, organised crime and terrorism: (1) the value chain perspective explains the first barrier: our strong preference for large scale biometric systems for general compulsory use. These biometric systems cause successful infringements to spread unnoticed. A biometric system will only function adequately if Biometrics is indispensable for solving the dominant chain problem. Multi-chain use of Biometrics takes it beyond the boundaries of good manageability. (2) the identity fraud perspective exposes the second barrier: our traditional approach to identity verification. We focus on identity documents, neglecting the person and the situation involved. Moreover, western legal cultures have made identity verification procedures known, transparent, uniform and predictable. Thus, we have developed a blind spot to identity fraud. Biometrics provides good potential to better checking persons, but will probably be used to enhance identity documents. Biometrics will only pay off if it confronts the identity fraudster with less predictable verification processes and more risks of his identity fraud being spotted. Standardised large scale applications of Biometrics for general compulsory use without countervailing measures will probably produce the reverse. This contribution tentatively presents a few headlines for an overall Biometrics strategy that could better resist identity fraud.
