  • Emergence of novel H7N9 Bird Flu: what needs to be discussed next?

    Abstract:

    The recent publication on the “Emergence of a new strain of the avian inFluenza virus” is a very interesting article [1]. The novel H7N9 Bird Flu from China is a present concern in public health. The disease is prevalent in many parts of China [2] and has spread to Taiwan as well [3]. As a result, there have been many attempts, such as development of new vaccine and antiviral drug, to eradicate the virus. The molecular biology and clinical features of the H7N9 virus have been extensively studied. However, in order to control the disease, other important concerns need to be considered. First, travel medicine should be given attention. Since some cases of H7N9 Bird Flu are mild, the affected patients can travel aboard, carrying the disease and thereby enabling its spread to others. Hence, strict emigration and immigration control processes should be put in place, especially for China's neighbors (e.g., Korea and Japan). Valuable lessons of poor port control and the uncontrolled spread of swine Flu should be applied to the present situation [4]. Hopefully, a vaccine against the H7N9 Bird Flu can be developed with the new advanced vaccine technologies available [5].

    The epidemic of H7N9 Bird Flu in eastern China in early 2013 has caused much attention from researchers as well as public health workers. The issue on modeling the transmission risks is very interesting topic. In this article, this issue is debated and discussed in order to promote further researches on prediction and prevention of avian inFluenza viruses supported by better interdisciplinary datasets from the surveillance and response system.

    Abstract:

    Bird Flu or avian Flu, caused by the H5N1 virus, is a new emerging infectious disease. The present review summarizes the details of thrombohemostatic disorders in human Bird Flu infection. According to present evidence, thrombocytopenia is a common presentation of H5N1 infection but disturbance of the coagulation pathway is not. In conclusion, bleeding presentation in patients with Bird Flu might relate to the pathology of platelets. Based on present knowledge, there is no report of thrombotic complication in H5N1 infection.

    Abstract:

    Bird Flu or avian Flu is a new emerging Infectious disease. The H5N1 virus has not only affected the fowls but also the human beings. Severe disease with high mortality in humans in Vietnam and Thailand are reported. This mini-study was undertaken in order to document the Impact of Bird Flu infection on leucocyte and lymphocyte counts among patients of Thailand. This study was designed as a descriptive retrospective study. A literature review on the papers concerning human Bird Flu in Thailand was performed. According to this study, there are 6 cases covering 12 Thai patients with confirmed diagnosis of Bird Flu. However, the complete data were available on only 6 patients. The reported leucocyte count ranges from 1,200 cells/cmm to 5,680 cells/cmm and the lymphocyte count ranges from 454 cells/ cmm to 1,440 cells/cmm. The average leucocyte and lymphocyte counts equalled to 3,230.0 +/- 1,552.7 cells/cmm and 748.7 +/- 348.5 cells/cmm, respectively. According to this study, low lymphocyte count is common. This can support the previous observation for the lymphocyte suppression effect of H5N1 virus.

  • Epidemic Investigation and Control on a Human Bird Flu Case

    Abstract:

    Objective To control the spread of Bird Flu in human, to prevent the out break and enhance the cure rate of the patients infected with the disease. Methods According to the emergency plan for Bird Flu in human issued by government and health authorities of different levels, the report,investigation and control of outbreak were carried out.Results When the case of Bird Flu in human was admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Zhejiang province, it was reported timely and the epidemiological investigation was launched intensively. Samples were collected for laboatory tests. The case was diagnosed by the experts from municipal and provincial health expert groups and controlling measures were put forward to effectively prevent the spread of first Bird Flu case in human in Zhejiang province. Conclusion The case of human Bird Flu in zhejiang was imported from other province. Early report、diagnosis and treatment are the major ways to reduce the death rate of Bird Flu in human.
