The genital plates were removed after dissection of the posterior part of the abdomen, and were stored in microvials contain-ing glycerin, attached to the respective exemplar in the collection of the Museu Nacional of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A key to males of the species of the genus is also presented. Illustrations of T. neospectrum and T. guttulosum are provided to clarify the comparisons with the new species described here

Zootaxa, 2018Co-Authors: Vitor Dias Tarli, Philippe Grandcolas, Roseli PellensAbstract:The genus Monastria Saussure, 1864 includes medium to large sized (40–55 mm) dark brown or black cockroaches found in the understory of the Neotropical Atlantic Forest from the Northeast of Brazil to Paraguay and Argentina. The genus shows evident sexual dimorphism: males are elongated with fully developed wings extending beyond the apex of cerci and females are oval and brachypterous. This study is a revision of the genus with redescription of the three already known species, Monastria biguttata (Thunberg, 1826), Monastria similis (Serville, 1838) and Monastria angulata Saussure, 1864, and description of five new ones, Monastria itubera sp. n. and Monastria itabuna sp. n. from state of Bahia, Monastria cabocla sp. n. from state of Sergipe, Monastria kaingangue sp. n. from state of Sao Paulo and Monastria sagittata sp. n. from state of Minas Gerais. The morphology of the genus and all species is described in details, including male genitalia. Based on this revision, we proposed a new combination for Hiereoblatta papillosa (Thunberg, 1826) comb. n. , excluding it from the genus Monastria . For the first time, the juvenile stages of Monastria are characterized and compared to other genera of Blaberinae of the Atlantic forest. Three determination keys are provided. The two first are aimed at identifying the adults and juvenile stages of the five genera of the Blaberinae radiation endemic to the Atlantic forest, respectively. The third concerns the identification of the species of the genus Monastria . A map indicating the localities where species were sampled is also provided.

In the Blaberidae cockroaches, a well-defined monophyletic family comprising several model species, no such phylogenetic tree is available despite several earlier contributions. Here, using six molecular markers (12S, 16S, 18S, 28S, COI and COII), we investigate the relationships of Blaberidae and compare our results with the traditional morphology-based classification. This resulted in a broad spectrum of situations, from congruent and well-supported hypotheses (e.g., the monophyly of Blaberidae, Oxyhaloinae and (Geoscapheiinae + Panesthiinae)) to incongruent and weakly supported results (e.g., polyphyly of Perisphaerinae). We emphasize that interesting and contrasted situations lie between the two extremities of this spectrum, especially concerning the genera Thanatophyllum Grandcolas, 1991, Phoetalia Stal, 1874, Laxta Walker, 1868 and Pronauphoeta Shelford, 1909. We also discuss the phylogenetic position of two incertae sedis genera ( Eustegasta Gerstaecker, 1883 and Gynopeltis Gerstaecker, 1869). We conclude that in-depth signal analyses should be performed to better understand molecular evolution and its consequence on tree reconstruction for this group. As for phylogenetic relationships per se , new markers should be searched for, especially to decipher deeper relationships in Blaberidae.

Miroblatta baai, a new very large cockroach species from caves of Borneo (Blattaria: Blaberidae)
Zootaxa, 2007Co-Authors: Philippe Grandcolas, Louis DeharvengAbstract:A new species of the genus Miroblatta Shelford, 1906 is described from caves of Borneo in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. This new species, M. baai sp. nov., is similar to the epigean species M. petrophila Shelford, 1906 also found in Borneo. It differs by a larger adult size, longer legs, shorter wings, longer pronotum showing a remarkable central bulbous structure, lighter colouration and genital morphology (especially sclerite L1 shape). The genital morphology as well as morphological evidence for ovoviviparity confirm that the genus belongs to the family Blaberidae, subfamily Epilamprinae. Contrary to its epigean relative M. petrophila, this new species has been found exclusively in karstic caves of the same underground river system and these occurrences as well as the elongated legs and reduced eyes allow one to assume that this is a truly troglobitic species, so far the first one recorded in the family Blaberidae.

Phylogenetic analysis of social behavior evolution in [Zetoborinae + Blaberinae + Gyninae + Diplopterinae] cockroaches: an update with the study of endemic radiations from the Atlantic forest
Studies on Neotropical Fauna and Environment, 2007Co-Authors: Roseli Pellens, Frédéric Legendre, Philippe GrandcolasAbstract:We updated the phylogenetic analysis of the evolution of habitat choice and social habits in the cockroach group of [Zetoborinae + Blaberinae + Gyninae + Diplopterinae] (Dictyoptera: Blaberidae) elaborated by Grandcolas (1998b). The original phylogenetic matrix was updated with new data obtained in the Brazilian Atlantic forest for the genera Parasphaeria and Zetobora (Zetoborinae), Monastria, Petasodes (Blaberinae) and Pycnoscelus (Pycnoscelinae) (one outgroup). These new data did not change the tree topology but showed that the fauna of the Atlantic forest has a complex evolutionary origin with several different radiations, one of which is local, and behavioral convergences or originalities.

New species of Blaberidae and Ectobiidae (Blattaria) from Brazil
Zoologia (Curitiba), 2014Co-Authors: Sonia Maria Lopes, Edivar Heeren De Oliveira, Vitor Dias TarliAbstract:We describe three new species collected from the Reserva Ducke (02°55'-03°01'S, 59°53'-59°59'W), near Manaus, state of Amazonas: one new species was included in Blaberidae (Epilamprinae): Epilampra manauara sp. nov: , which is similar to E. sagitta Rocha e Silva & Aguiar, 1978. It differs from that species in the generally darker coloration and the internal genitalia, which has the right phallomere hooked, developed, wide medially and distended apically, bearing an apical spine-like structure and a median sclerite with a larger prepucium, rounded and with apex more sclerotized and with better-defined apical crests. Two new species were included in Ectobiidae (Blattellinae): Chromatonotus amazoninus sp. nov: , which is similar to Chromatonotus caruaruensis Lopes & Khouri, 2009 in the parallel brown marks on the pronotum, but differs in the shape of the subgenital plate, the median sclerite with a more-sclerotized tip, left phallomere with angulate apex (90 degrees) and apex curved, right phallomere with basal stem more slender and with apical arms dilated; and Dasyblatta spiculata sp. nov: , which has an asymmetrical genital plate and the median sclerite shaped as a spine apically, differing from other species of the genus. The specimens were collected in the evening, in leaf litter, from fallen logs, or on branches and foliage. The male genitalia are illustrated and the material studied is deposited in the collection of the Department of Entomology of the Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro (MNRJ).

New group, new species and new records from Brazil of the atropos, brasilianus and giganteus groups (Blattaria, Blaberidae, Blaberinae)

A new group is defined, and 12 new species are described. The genitalia of the eight known species are described. The descriptions are based on the morphology of the head, thorax and abdomen, illustrating the structures of the genitalia and variations in the form of the structures, some within the same species. New records for five known species are discussed. All material is deposited in the collection of the Museu Nacional of Rio de Janeiro.

European Journal of Endocrinology, 2006Co-Authors: Leam SrengAbstract:Two principal pheromones are essential in all cockroach sexual behavioral sequences: the volatile sex attractant pheromone released by one partner for long distance attraction and an aphrodisiac sex pheromone produced exclusively by male tergal glands for female mounting and feeding behavior. In the Blaberinae subfamily, the female produces volatile sex attractant pheromones and the male, aphrodisiacs. A close relationship is known to exist between the release of these pheromonal signals from specific glands and the corresponding behaviors (female calling posture and male wing raising). However, in this cockroach group, no data on the glands secreting sex attractant pheromones and aphrodisiacs have been available until now. In seven species of the Blaberinae subfamily: Blaberus colosseus, B. craniifer, B. discoidalis, Blaptica interior, Byrsotria fumigata, Eublaberus distanti and E. posticus; one species of the Zetoborinae subfamily: Schultesia lampyridiformis; one species of the Epilamprinae subfamily: Epilampra maya and one species of the Panesthiinae subfamily, Panesthia sp., the females possess all pygidial glands on the 10 th tergite and the males have tergal glands situated anteriorly, generally on tergites T1 and T2. These glands are formed of type 3 glandular units with two cells, i.e. glandular and canal cells. The uniform presence of female pygidial glands and male tergal glands explains their relationship with their corresponding sexual behaviors.
