Hydronopylformamides: Modification of the Naturally Occurring Compound (-)-β-Pinene to Produce Insect Repellent Candidates against Blattella germanica.
Molecules (Basel Switzerland), 2017Co-Authors: Shengliang Liao, Liu Yan, Si Hongyan, Xiao Zhuanquan, Guorong Fan, Chen Shangxing, Peng Wang, Zongde WangAbstract:The development of a novel repellent plays an important role in the integrated control of Blattella germanica. A series of novel hydronopylformamides derivatives were synthesized from a naturally occurring compound (-)-β-pinene. The structures of these hydronopylformamides derivatives were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-NMR and 13C-NMR), and electron impact mass spectrometry (EI-MS). Repellency of these hydronopylformamides derivatives against Blattella germanica was evaluated by the using petri dish arena method. The results showed that four derivatives (compounds 8a, 8b, 8c and 8e) exhibited repellency against Blattella germanica at a concentration of 20 mg/mL. Compound 8a was the most active compound among these derivatives, where the repelling ratios of compound 8a against Blattella germanica were 66.10%, 50.46%, 48.26%, at concentrations of 20 mg/mL, 10 mg/mL, and 5 mg/mL, respectively. In addition, compound 8a showed better repellency than the traditional insect repellent N, N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET), which indicated that compound 8a had a good application prospect in the prevention of Blattella germanica. This research hopes to promote the value-added utilization of (-)-β-pinene and the development of novel German cockroach repellents.

Repellence and toxicity of Schinus molle extracts on Blattella germanica.
Fitoterapia, 2007Co-Authors: Adriana Alicia Ferrero, C. Sánchez Chopa, J.o. Werdin González, Raúl Adolfo AlzogarayAbstract:The biological activities of ethanol and petroleum ether extracts from leaves and fruits of Schinus molle against adults of Blattella germanica were examined by repellence test and topical application. All extracts produced significant repellent effect and mortality.

Cuticular extracts inducing aggregation in the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.)
Journal of Insect Physiology, 1998Co-Authors: Colette Rivault, Ann Cloarec, Leam SrengAbstract:German cockroaches Blattella germanica (L.) are gregarious insects. An aggregation pheromone contributes to the maintenance of aggregates. Choice experiments checked the efficiency of different solvents, i.e. dichloromethane, methanol and pentane, in extracting attractive substances and compared the attractiveness of extracts of different parts of the body. Dichloromethane and pentane were the most efficient solvents tested for extracting the attractive substances. Methanol whole body extracts appeared inefficient to induce aggregation. The proportion of larvae attracted to conditioned papers decreased in relation to the size of cuticular surface washed, from whole body to half-body and again to a section of the body cut in three. Attractive substances appear to be present on all parts of the body. Chemical analysis by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) showed that the active extracts contained only cuticular hydrocarbons. In addition to behavioural tests, differences between the composition of methanol extracts and that of the extracts for the other two solvents were revealed by GC. These results indicated that the cuticular hydrocarbons operate as an aggregation pheromone in Blattella germanica. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Spatial Orientation in Blattella germanica L. Larvae
Ethology, 1994Co-Authors: Laurent Dabouineau, Colette RivaultAbstract:The aim of these experiments was to investigate the type of cues used in homing processes by young Blattella germanica L. larvae. Several types of stimuli were tested: path integration with kinesthetic cues and visual orientation with landmark cues. Tests measured the escape direction of larvae from the food box after disturbance. Either type of cue alone, path integration or visual landmarks, was sufficient to allow larvae to orient towards their shelters, but they oriented more precisely when both types of cue were used. When several landmark cues (proximal and distal) were present, their relative angular position seemed important in the orientation process. Macroscopic shapes in the environment appeared to be used as a global image, memorized to reach the shelter.

Resistance of Blattella germanica and Musca domestica to commonly-used insecticides in Shenzhen City
Modern Preventive Medicine, 2014Co-Authors: Su Qing-shenAbstract:Objective The objective of this study was to investigate the resistance of Blattella germanica and Musca domestica to commonly-used insecticides in Shenzhen for providing scientific evidences for its effective control. Methods Membrane method was used for measuring the insecticide resistance of Blattella germanica and trace titration method for that of Musca domestica. Results Blattella germanica in Shenzhen was resistant to all 5 tested insecticides, with the resistance coefficient to beta-cypermethrin, deltamethrin, biothion, propoxur and fenobucarb of 25.27, 10.65, 12.73, 4.55 and 14.59, respectively. The resistance to beta-cypermethrin was the most significant(R20). Compared to the sensitive strain, Musca domestica was more resistant to beta-cypermethrin and deltamethrin, with the resistance coefficient of 87.14 and 285, respectively. To fenobucarb and propoxur, the resistance coefficient of Musca domestica were 3.78 and 4.10, respectively. Conclusion Blattella germanica in Shenzhen has high resistance to beta-cypermethrin, deltamethrin, biothion, and fenobucarb, and low resistance to propoxur. Musca domestica is highly resistant to deltamethrin and also has a high resistance to beta-cypermethrin. Its resistance to propoxur and fenobucarb is relatively low. Insecticides should be used scientifically for the effective control of Blattella germanica and Musca domestica.
