Spatial and temporal variation in predation on reef fishes by coral trout ( Plectropomus leopardus , Serranidae)

KingsfordAbstract:The diet of coral trout Plectropomus leopardus (Serranidae) was studied over a two year period at One Tree Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Rapid visual counts demonstrated that P. leopardus were most abundant on the reef slope habitat and inner edge of the enclosed lagoon. Few P. leopardus were found at sites from “inner” lagoon. It was hypothesized that diet would vary among habitats, times and size classes of coral trout. Ninety-two percent of P. leopardus that contained prey had consumed fish and 87% had only eaten fish. Many types of reef fish were taken by P. leopardus (e.g. Pomacentridae, Scaridae, Blenniidae and Labridae). Most pelagic prey (Clupeidae and Engraulididae) were taken on the reef slope, while some prey were solely or pimarily taken in the lagoon (e.g. Blenniidae and crustaceans). Furthermore, different sizes of fish (e.g. coral trout) may impact assemblages of prey in different ways.

The Lusitania Province as a center of diversification: The phylogeny of the genus Microlipophrys (Pisces: Blenniidae)

Tropical species have expanded their ranges during warm periods and either retreated during cold periods or survived in local refuges. Successive waves of dispersion into this Province could have favored diversification through geographic isolation. Taxa that remained in this large Province may also have diversified in loco. We analyzed molecular markers of the genus Microlipophrys (family Blenniidae) that confirm the validity of this genus and of the seven recognized species. Microlipophrys and its sister clade apparently originated within Lusitania and dispersed into the tropics at a later stage.

Multiscale habitat associations of detrivorous blennies (Blenniidae: Salariini)

WilsonAbstract:The distribution and habitat associations of detrivorous blennies on a tropical coral reef were investigated at several spatial scales and compared with other fish that feed on the epilithic algal matrix to assess density and biomass contributions of small detrivorous fishes to these assemblages. At broad spatial scales total blenny abundance and biomass were highest on the tops of reefs exposed to prevailing winds. On the finer scale of microhabitat use, all species showed a preference for non-living corals, although the type of coral utilised differed between species. The high abundance of blennies on reef tops and non-living corals may be partially related to the quality and availability of detritus in these habitats. Comparisons of total blenny abundance and biomass with other territorial detrivores found that blennies accounted for approximately 60% of this functional group's density and 21% of their biomass on exposed reef tops. Overall, territorial detrivores were found to constitute approximately 37% of the density and 26% of the biomass of the detrivorous/herbivorous fish assemblage on exposed reef tops. Small detrivorous fish therefore represent a substantial proportion of fish assemblages that feed on epilithic algae and associated detritus on coral reefs.

Trophic status and feeding selectivity of blennies (Blenniidae: Salariini)

WilsonAbstract:An evaluation of the dietary resources available to, and selected by, blennies of the tribe Salariini was used to assess their trophic status on the Great Barrier Reef. Gut-content analysis of nine species of blennies found detrital aggregates to be the dominant item ingested. Samples of the dietary resources available to one of these species, Salarias patzneri, were compared biochemically. Of the two main dietary categories (detrital aggregates and filamentous algae), detrital aggregates were the major resource available, accounting for 53 ± 4.6% (SE) of the organic matter present. The mean C:N values for detrital aggregates (17.2 ± 0.8) and filamentous algae (20.0 ± 1.8) were very similar, as were protein concentrations (1.8 ± 0.1 and 2.1 ± 0.1 μg mg−1, respectively). However, mean carbohydrate concentrations were much lower in the aggregates than the filamentous algae (19 ± 2 and 76 ± 13 μg mg−1, respectively). Comparison of the inorganic particles ingested to those available indicated that S. patzneri selectively fed on particles 250 μm, (predominantly algal filaments). The patterns of resource availability, nutritional quality and selectivity suggest that salariin blennies utilise detrital aggregates as their primary dietary resource.

Regarding the structure of parietals and supraoccipital, and the course of the supratemporal canal of the lateral-line system, four different patterns were found. This leads to the differentiation of the genera Lipophrys, Coryphoblennius, Parablennius, Scartella and Aidablennius. Blennius is separated from these genera as it possesses narrow relationships to the tribes Nemophini, Omobranchini and Phenablenniini. The remaining genera of the former tribe Blenniini (Aidablennius, Chasmodes, Coryphoblennius, Hypleurochilus, Hypsoblennius, Lipophrys, Parablennius and Scartella) are joined in the new tribe Parablenniini which possesses strong relationships to the tribe Salariini. Es erwiesen sich nur wenige der angegebenen Merkmale als relevant fur die Taxor. omie dieser Gruppe auf der Gattungsebene: Die Verbindung der Kiemenspalten, die Verbindung der Dentalia und die ubermasige Vermehrung von Zahnen. Reduktionen (z. B. Seitenorgansystem) waren nur brauchbar in Kombination mit anderen Merkmalen. Es wird daher vorgeschlagen, nur noch die Gattungen Blennius, Coryphoblennius, Parablennius und Lipophrys, sowie Chalarodenna, Chasmodes, Hypsoblennius und Hypleurochilus (mit vielen ursprunglichen Merkmalen) zu unter-scheiden. Therefore, we propose to distinguish only the genera Blennius, Coryphoblennius, Parablennius (including Bath'sAidablennius, Bathyblennius, Lupinoblennius, Pictiblennius, and Scartella), and Liophrys (including Bath'sParalipophrys and Salaria), as well as Chalaroderma, Chasmodes, Hypsoblennius, and Hypleurochilus, the latter ones showing many primitive characters. Using the taxonomic criteria of 4 other blenniid tribes, a cladogram is constructed which emphasizes the connective status of Blenniini to Salariini on the one hand, and to Ornobranchini, Phenablenniini, and Nemophini on the other hand.
