    AIM: Plant-based diets are recommended in the context of environmental sustainability and health. Since not all plant foods can be considered beneficial, a distinction needs to be made between healthful and unhealthful plant foods. The aim of this study was to investigate longitudinal associations between changes in an overall plant-based diet index, a healthful plant-based diet index and an unhealthful plant-based diet index, with changes in anthropometrics and Blood Lipids as indicators of morphological and metabolic fitness, respectively. METHODS: A 3-day dietary record was completed by 650 Flemish adults (420 men, 230 women) in 2002-2004 and 2012-2014. Three plant-based diet indices were calculated based on quintile scores regarding the intake of animal- or plant-based food items. Associations between 10-year changes in diet indices and changes in anthropometrics and Blood Lipids were tested using multivariate linear regression. RESULTS: Plant-based diet indices did not differ over time. Using the unadjusted model, few significant associations were found between changes in diet indices and changes in anthropometrics and Blood Lipids. However, these relationships disappeared after adjusting for confounding. In women, a positive association was found between changes in overall plant-based diet index and changes in body mass index in the adjusted model. CONCLUSIONS: Index values did not differ over time and few longitudinal associations were found.

Longitudinal research about the association between dietary indices and respectively anthropometric parameters and Blood Lipids is lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the longitudinal association between three dietary indices (Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI), Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) and Diet Quality Index (DQI)) and respectively anthropometric parameters and Blood Lipids. METHODS: A three day diet record was completed by 373 men and 197 women in 2002-2004 and 2012-2014. HEI, MDS and DQI were calculated. Waist circumference (WC) and Body Mass Index (BMI) were used as anthropometric parameters. A linear regression analysis was performed to investigate associations between changes in dietary indices and changes in respectively anthropometric parameters and Blood Lipids, adjusted for potential confounders. RESULTS: Only in men an increase in all three dietary indices was associated with a decrease in WC and BMI in the non-adjusted analysis and for HEI and DQI also in the adjusted analysis. No longitudinal associations were found between dietary indices and Blood Lipids both in men and women. CONCLUSIONS: Only few associations were found between dietary indices and anthropometric parameters, whilst no associations were found with Blood Lipids. An increase in dietary indices was associated with an improvement in anthropometric parameters only in men. As this is the first study investigating associations between changes in dietary indices and changes in respectively anthropometric parameters and Blood Lipids, further research is needed to evaluate these possible associations.

    Background: Blood Lipids are cardiovascular health indicators. High LDL cholesterol values and/or high total cholesterol (TC)/HDL cholesterol ratios are positively related with cardiovascular mortality. Evidence suggests that a Mediterranean diet can reduce the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet is often measured by the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS). However, the association between the Mediterranean diet and Blood lipid profiles seems still inconclusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the MDS, its different components and Blood lipid profiles. Methods: A sample of 506 women and 707 men (aged 18–75 years) was recruited. Three-day diet records were used to calculate the MDS. Blood samples were analyzed for serum TC, LDL and HDL cholesterol. ANOVA was used to analyze Blood Lipids across the MDS tertiles. A multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to investigate the associations between the MDS, its components and Blood Lipids, adjusted for several confounders. All analyses were stratified by gender. Results: Few gender-specific associations were found between the MDS, its components and Blood Lipids. Only in men, the total MDS was negatively related with LDL cholesterol and the ratio TC/HDL cholesterol while positively with HDL cholesterol. In women, respectively two (MUFA/SFA and cereals) and in men three (fruits & nuts, meat and alcohol) of the nine MDS components were related with Blood Lipids. Conclusions: Analyses investigating the relationship between the MDS, its components and Blood lipid profiles indicate only limited influence of the Mediterranean diet on Blood Lipids. More associations were detected in men compared to women.

    BACKGROUND Intervention studies suggest that incorporating walnuts into the diet may improve Blood Lipids without promoting weight gain. OBJECTIVE We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled trials evaluating the effects of walnut consumption on Blood Lipids and other cardiovascular risk factors. Design We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed and EMBASE databases (from database inception to January 2018) of clinical trials comparing walnut-enriched diets with control diets. We performed random-effects meta-analyses comparing walnut-enriched and control diets for changes in pre-post intervention in Blood Lipids (mmol/L), apolipoproteins (mg/dL), body weight (kg), and Blood pressure (mm Hg). RESULTS Twenty-six clinical trials with a total of 1059 participants were included. The following weighted mean differences (WMDs) in reductions were obtained for walnut-enriched diets compared with control groups: -6.99 mg/dL (95% CI: -9.39, -4.58 mg/dL; P < 0.001) (3.25% greater reduction) for total Blood cholesterol (TC) and -5.51 mg/dL (95% CI: -7.72, -3.29 mg/dL; P < 0.001) (3.73% greater reduction) for low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Triglyceride concentrations were also reduced in walnut-enriched diets compared with control [WMD = -4.69 (95% CI: -8.93, -0.45); P = 0.03; 5.52% greater reduction]. More pronounced reductions in Blood Lipids were observed when walnut interventions were compared with American and Western diets [WMD for TC = -12.30 (95% CI: -23.17, -1.43) and for LDL = -8.28 (95% CI: -13.04, -3.51); P < 0.001]. Apolipoprotein B (mg/dL) was also reduced significantly more on walnut-enriched diets compared with control groups [WMD = -3.74 (95% CI: -6.51, -0.97); P = 0.008] and a trend towards a reduction was observed for apolipoprotein A [WMD = -2.91 (95% CI: -5.98, 0.08); P = 0.057]. Walnut-enriched diets did not lead to significant differences in weight change (kg) compared with control diets [WMD = -0.12 (95% CI: -2.12, 1.88); P = 0.90], systolic Blood pressure (mm Hg) [WMD = -0.72 (95% CI: -2.75, 1.30); P = 0.48], or diastolic Blood pressure (mm Hg) [WMD = -0.10 (95% CI: -1.49, 1.30); P = 0.88]. Conclusions Incorporating walnuts into the diet improved Blood lipid profile without adversely affecting body weight or Blood pressure.
