  • Overview of Bluetooth Security
    Bluetooth Security Attacks, 2013
Co-Authors: Keijo Haataja, Konstantin Hyppönen, Sanna Pasanen, Pekka Toivanen
    Abstract:

The basic Bluetooth Security configuration is done by the user who decides how a Bluetooth device will implement its connectability and discoverability options.

  • Bluetooth Security attacks comparative analysis attacks and countermeasures
    2013
Co-Authors: Keijo Haataja, Sanna Pasanen, Konstantin Hyppnen, Pekka Toivanen
    Abstract:

Bluetooth technology has enjoyed tremendous success, and it's now employed in billions of devices for short-range wireless data and real-time audio or video transfer. In this book the authors provide an overview of Bluetooth Security. They examine network vulnerabilities and provide a literature-review comparative analysis of recent Security attacks. They analyze and explain related countermeasures, including one based on secure simple pairing, and they also propose a novel attack that works against all existing Bluetooth versions. They conclude with a discussion on future research directions. The book is appropriate for practitioners and researchers in information Security, in particular those engaged in the design of networked and mobile devices.

  • comparative analysis of Bluetooth Security attacks
    2013
Co-Authors: Keijo Haataja, Konstantin Hyppönen, Sanna Pasanen, Pekka Toivanen
    Abstract:

As an interconnection technology, Bluetooth has to address all the traditional Security problems, well known from distributed networks [25].

  • new practical attack against Bluetooth Security using efficient implementations of Security analysis tools
CNIS '07 Proceedings of the Fourth IASTED International Conference on Communication Network and Information Security, 2007
    Co-Authors: Keijo Haataja
    Abstract:

As an interconnection technology, Bluetooth has to address all traditional Security problems, well known from the distributed networks. In addition, Security issues in wireless ad-hoc networks are much more complex than those of more traditional wired or centralized wireless networks. Moreover, Bluetooth networks are formed by the radio links, which means that there are also additional Security aspects whose impact is yet not well understood. New Bluetooth applications create new Security threats, for example, in printing. In this paper, we describe a new practical attack against Bluetooth Security using efficient implementations of Security analysis tools. In addition, we demonstrate with experimental figures that using our Security analysis tools, attacks against Bluetooth-enabled printers become practical. Moreover, we propose countermeasures that render these attacks impractical although not totally eliminating their potential danger.

  • detailed descriptions of new proof of concept Bluetooth Security analysis tools and new Security attacks
    2005
    Co-Authors: Keijo Haataja
    Abstract:

This report describes the details of two new proof-of-concept Bluetooth Security analysis tools and two new attacks against Bluetooth Security. On-Line PIN Cracking script is a Security analysis tool for on-line Bluetooth device PIN cracking. Brute-Force BD ADDR Scanning script is a Security analysis tool for brute-force discovery of the addresses of Bluetooth devices that want to be private. Scripts of both our Security analysis tools exist and can be demonstrated to Bluetooth device manufacturers or press if required, but they will not be released in any public domain because due to their efficiency they can be very dangerous. Our new attacks, BTKeylogging and BTVoiceBugging, extend On-Line PIN Cracking attack.

  • Security threats in Bluetooth technology
    Computers & Security, 2018
Co-Authors: Shahriar Hassan, Soumik Das Bibon, Shohrab Hossain, Mohammed Atiquzzaman
    Abstract:

Bluetooth allows connecting mobile devices in short range in order to transfer files/videos. It is now a popular means of short range wireless communication. Although Bluetooth is acceptably reliable, there are still some weaknesses in this protocol. Bluetooth is vulnerable to several threats. Since these threats are seldom reported, people are not much aware of them. Existing surveys on Bluetooth Security outline only a few threats without much illustration and categorization. In this paper, we have performed a comprehensive survey to identify major Security threats in Bluetooth communication and presented them with illustrations. Although Bluetooth device manufacturers are doing their part to keep the technology secure, the users should also be aware of these Security threats and take a minimum level of precaution. The objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive survey of existing threats in Bluetooth technology and suggest probable solutions.
