YeatesAbstract:The endemic Australian bee fly genus Meomyia Evenhuis is revised, including six described species and three newly described: Meomyia hortorum sp. nov., Meomyia kochae sp. nov., Meomyia melanocincta sp. nov. Bombylius tetratrichus Walker is excluded from Meomyia and placed in Dissodesma Bowden Li. Meomyia is characterised by the slender and elongate antennal flagellum, and the black abdominal band and dense black tuft on apex of abdomen. A key to species of Meomyia is provided. Species are found in southern Australia.

(Diptera: Bombyliidae: Anthracinae) emerged from parasitised Pison simillimum Smith (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae) larvae found inside a Sceliphron formosum Smith (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) mud wasps nest. Thraxan sp. larvae are endoparasites of P. simillimum larvae. The endoparasite pupates inside the host larva, kills it, and emerges free of the host body. We describe and illustrate the pupal exuviae of the newly found species and two known species, T. luteus Yeates & Lambkin and T. misatulus Yeates & Lambkin, and we compare these pupal exuviae to those of Anthrax Scopoli.

YeatesAbstract:A restricted Western Australia bee fly genus Pilosia Hull (Bombyliidae, Bombyliinae) is reviewed with the description of two new species, Pilosia incana Bowden & Li sp. nov. and Pilosia flava Li & Yeates sp. nov., and the type species, Pilosia flavopilosa Hull, 1973 is identified as a new junior synonym of Pilosia immutatus (Walker, 1849). This genus can easily be distinguished from other Australian genera in the subfamily by having a three-segmented antennal flagellum, a closed cell cup and a haired mediotergite. A recent morphological phylogeny of Australian Bombyliinae suggested Pilosia is sister to all the remaining Bombyliinae genera (Li & Yeates, 2018). YeatesAbstract:Known as a monotypic genus for over a century, Marmasoma White, 1916 is an endemic Australian bee fly genus belonging to the tribe Eclimini of the subfamily Bombyliinae. A new species: Marmasoma hortorum sp. nov. is described based on a series of specimens from Western Australia and South Australia. This new species can be easily distinguished from the congener by the inconspicuous pale wing markings and mostly white to pale yellow scales on the body, as well as characters of both male and female genitalia. M. sumptuosum is found in south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania, and some specimens have been collected on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. M. hortorum sp. nov. occurs in south Western Australia, and a pair of specimens has been taken just north of Port Augusta in South Australia. A key to species of Marmasoma is provided.

YeatesAbstract:Bombyliinae, one of the largest subfamilies of Bombyliidae, including 78 genera assigned to four tribes, is distributed on all continents except Antarctica. Their larvae are parasitoids, and adults are important pollinators. The Australian Bombyliinae currently has 17 described genera and 87 described species. The purpose of this study is to establish the phylogeny of the Australian members of the subfamily Bombyliinae, including the boundaries and relationships of the genera, using morphological characters. One maximum parsimony tree was generated from 83 morphological characters scored for 50 species, representing all recognised genera and some unplaced species that we considered may represent new genera. Phylogenetic analysis recovered the relationships between the recognised Australian genera of Bombyliinae and clarified generic limits. The group comprises five main clades, with the genus Pilosia being sister to the remaining Bombyliinae. On the basis of this analysis, four new genera are described: Lambkinomyia Li & Yeates, gen. nov., Dissodesma Bowden & Li, gen. nov., Nigromyia Li & Yeates, gen. nov. and Robertsmyia Li & Yeates, gen. nov. Ten new species are described: Dissodesma immaculata Li & Yeates, sp. nov., Dissodesma flava Li & Yeates, sp. nov., Dissodesma smarti Li & Yeates, sp. nov., Nigromyia collessi Li & Yeates, sp. nov., Nigromyia crocea Li & Yeates, sp. nov., Nigromyia flavimana Li & Yeates, sp. nov., Nigromyia longistriata Li & Yeates, sp. nov., Nigromyia pantherina Li & Yeates, sp. nov., Nigromyia parva Li & Yeates, sp. nov. and Nigromyia tomentosa Li & Yeates, sp. nov. Two new junior synonyms are identified: Apiformyia is a junior synonym of Eristalopsis and Brychosoma is a junior synonym of Staurostichus. The core focus is on nature discovery identifying and describing new species of plants and animals. The Bush Blitz program has enabled the collection and description of beeflies (Diptera, Bombyliidae) from surveys in Western Australia and Queensland. Three new species of Australian beeflies belonging to the Exoprosopini are described; Palirika mackenziei Lambkin, sp. n., Palirika culgoafloodplainensis lambkin, sp. n., and Larrpana bushblitz Lambkin, sp. n. Phylogenetic analysis of 40 Australian exoprosopine species belonging to the Balaana generic-group Lambkin & Yeates, 2003 supports the placement of the three new species into existing genera, and the erection and description of the new genus Ngalki Lambkin, gen. n. for Ngalki trigonium (Lambkin & Yeates, 2003), comb. n. Revised keys are provided for the genera of the Australian Balaana genus-group and the species of Palirika Lambkin & Yeates, 2003 and Larrpana Lambkin & Yeates, 2003. LambkinAbstract:Partitioned Bremer support examination of combined cladistic analyses indicates nodes at which the support from the partitions differs, and also identifies the location of character disagreement generated by the combination of data matrices. Significant character incongruence was found between mtDNA sequence data and adult morphological characters from three tribes of bee flies (Diptera : Bombyliidae : Anthracinae : Villini, Anthracini, Exoprosopini). Partitioned Bremer support quantitatively reveals the location of significant conflict between characters from the different partitions. Examination of several partitioned support measures show which characters contributed to the disagreement at that node. A very high value of increased support at another node occurred upon combination of the data partitions and was also examined using these support measures.

YeatesAbstract:Almost half of the 4547 described bee flies (Bombyliidae: Diptera) in the world belong to the subfamily Anthracinae, with most of the world's diversity in three cosmopolitan tribes: Villini, Anthracini and Exoprosopini. Molecular data from 815 base pairs of 16S mitochondrial DNA and morphological characters from species-groups of these tribes in Australia were analysed cladistically. The results show that the relationships between the anthracine tribes reflect those found in a previous morphological analysis. The genera of the Anthracinae in Australia are monophyletic, except for Ligyra Newman, and are assigned to tribes. Although simultaneous analysis of the combined molecular and morphological data produced clades found in both separate analyses, the different data sources are significantly incongruent. We use phylogenetic measures to examine support for the relationships among the Australian Anthracinae inferred by the molecular and morphological data.

An evolutionary radiation of beeflies in semi-arid Australia: systematics of the Exoprosopini (Diptera : Bombyliidae)

GreatheadAbstract:Almost half of the 4822 described beeflies in the world belong to the subfamily Anthracinae, with most of the diversity found in three cosmopolitan tribes: Villini, Anthracini, and Exoprosopini. The Australian Exoprosopini previously contained three genera, Ligyra Newman, Pseudopenthes Roberts and Exoprosopa Macquart. Pseudopenthes is an Australian endemic, with two species including Ps. hesperis, sp. nov. from Western Australia. Two new species of the exoprosopine Atrichochira Hesse, Atr. commoni, sp. nov. and Atr. paramonovi, sp. nov., are also described from Australia, extending the generic distribution from Africa. Cladistic analysis clarified the phylogenetic relationships between the recognised groups of the Exoprosopini and determined generic limits on a world scale. Inclusion of 18 Australian exoprosopines placed the Australian species in the context of the world fauna. The Exoprosopini contains six large groups. The basal group I contains species previously included in Exoprosopa to which the name Defilippia Lioy is applied. Group II contains Heteralonia Rondani, Atrichochira, Micomitra Bowden, Pseudopenthes, and Diatropomma Bowden. Colossoptera Hull is newly synonymised with Heteralonia. Group III is a paraphyletic assemblage of Pterobates Bezzi and Exoprosopa including the Australian Ex. sylvana ( Fabricius). Ligyra is paraphyletic, forming two well-separated clades. The African clade is described as Euligyra Lambkin, gen. nov., which, together with Litorhina Bezzi and Hyperalonia Rondani, form group IV. The Australian group V is true Ligyra. The remaining monophyletic lineage of exoprosopines, group VI, the Balaana-group of genera, shows evidence of an evolutionary radiation of beeflies in semi-arid Australia. Phylogenetic analysis of all 42 species of the Balaana-group of genera formed a basis for delimiting genera. Seven new genera are described by Lambkin & Yeates: Balaana, Kapua, Larrpana, Munjua, Muwarna, Palirika and Wurda. Four non-Australian species belong to Balaana. Thirty two new Australian species are described: Bal. abscondita, Bal. bicuspis, Bal. centrosa, Bal. gigantea, Bal. kingcascadensis, K. corusca, K. irwini, K. westralica, Lar. collessi, Lar. zwicki, Mun. erugata, Mun. lepidokingi, Mun. paralutea, Mun. trigona, Muw. vitreilinearis, Pa. anaxios, Pa. basilikos, Pa. blackdownensis, Pa. bouchardi, Pa. cyanea, Pa. danielsi, Pa. decora, Pa. viridula, Pa. whyalla, W. emu, W. impatientis, W. montebelloensis, W. norrisi, W. patrellia, W. skevingtoni, W. windorah, and W. wyperfeldensis. EvenhuisAbstract:A new genus of Phthiriinae, Hirsutophallus gen. nov. is described, based on the examination of male and female specimens from the Andean region of Bolivia and Argentina. Hirsutophallus gen. nov. contains several characters that distinguish it from other Phthiriinae genera, such as: prominent tip on the lateral margin of the scape; lower lobes on epiphallus; prominent lateral lobes on epiphallus, with dorsal macrosetae; penial guide of distiphallus with long and dense macrosetae on dorsal surface; gonocoxite with medial process large basally and acute apex in lateral view, with short apical and ventral spines and posterior process with ventral spines; gonostylus with row of spines on apical third of dorsal and ventral surface and furca with V-shaped sclerites, with very long and curved parallel arms. The new genus, endemic to the Neotropical Region, is described to accommodate Hirsutophallus andinus gen. nov. et sp. nov. An identification key to the genera of Phthiriinae is also provided. The species is described and illustrated in detail, including the male and female terminalia.

Adults can often be seen either resting and sunning themselves on trails, rocks or twigs or feeding on fl owering plants as they are nectar feeders. All known larvae of bee fl ies are predators or parasitoids of arthropods. The Brazilian fauna of bombyliids comprises at the moment 110 species of which 12 have been recorded to the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.KEYWORDS. The divergence between Nearctic and Neotropical clades is associated with a spatial disjunction along the Mexican Transition Zone, which supports evidence that an ancient Caribbean event was mainly responsible for the diversification of major lineages of Heterostylum . This biogeographic scenario, as well as alternative scenarios, was also analyzed and discussed along with the results obtained from an event-based biogeographical analysis (DIVA). Se presenta un analisis cladistico y biogeografico del genero Heterostylum Macquart (Diptera: Bombyliidae), un genero de mosca-abeja del Nuevo Mundo con 14 especies. Se obtuvo una hipotesis filogenetica basado sobre una matriz de datos con 27 caracteres, utilizando el analisis de cladograma y un programa de busqueda, TNT, y el programa de edicion de matriz y de visualizar el arbol, WINCLADA. Los estados de los caracteres fueron polarizados por el arbol de enraizamiento con el siguiente taxa del grupo externo: Toxophora aurea Macquart, Apiformyia australis Yeates, Triploechus novus Williston, T. bellus Filipos y T. heteronevrus Macquart. La monofilia de Heterostylum fue bien apoyado, y despues de aplicar parcialidad sucesiva, se encontraron 2 clados principales: el clan Neartica que incluye H. robustum (Osten Sacken), H. helvolum Hall & Evenhuis, H. deani Painter, H. croceum Painter, y H. engelhardti Painter, y el clados Neotropical con H. haemorrhoicum (Loew), H. rufum (Olivier), H. evenhuisi Cunha y Lamas, H. maculipennis Cunha y Lamas, H. ferrugineum (Fabricius), H. hirsutum (Thunberg), y H. pallipes Bigot. Para el analisis biogeografico derivamos un cladograma de area basada en la hipotesis filogenetica obtenida al analizar el patron de distribucion y la diversificacion espacial de Heterostylum . La divergencia entre los clanes del Neartico y Neotropico se asocia con una disyuncion espacial por la Zona de Transicion Mexicana, que apoya la evidencia de que un evento antiguo del Caribe fue responsable principalmente por la diversificacion de los principales linajes de Heterostylum . Este escenario biogeografico, asi como los escenarios alternativos, tambien fueron analizados y discutidos junto con los resultados obtenidos de un analisis biogeografico basado en eventos (DIVA).

During a one-year survey (2006) a total of 53 Bombyliid species dependent 26 genera were identified. Of these, eleven species including Spogostylum isis (Meigen, 1820), Spogostylum tripunctatum (Wiedemann, 1820), Cononedys stenura (Loew, 1871), Exoprosopa dispar (Loew, 1869), Exhyalanthrax macrops (Portschinski, 1887), Hemipenthes robusta (Zaitzev, 1966), Villa hottentotta (Linnaeus, 1758), Villa niphobleta (Loew, 1869), Legnotomyia trichorrhoea (Loew, 1855), Cytherea fenestrulata (Loew, 1873), Lomatia shelkovnikovi (Paramonov, 1924) are reported as new records for Iranian bee fly fauna.

More than 870 specimens from 72 localities were collected. Specimens of Bombyliidae collected previously from Jordan and preserved in the University of Jordan Insect Museum as well as in other Jordanian collections were studied. The specimens were found to belong to 131 species in 41 genera and eight subfamilies. Of these, 123 species are recorded for the first time. The number of specimens examined, localities, and dates in Jordan are provided for each species followed by remarks.

Three species in Pipunculopsis were invalid when originally proposed by Zaitzev in 2001. They are hereby validated with the criteria fulfilling Article 16.4.2 and the original authorship of Zaitzev should be kept since he provided the information to validate the names herein.

Characters separating them are provided and they are shown to be largely sympatric. Spogostylum umbra (Walker) and S. arugotense Zaitzev are confirmed as synonyms of S. ocyale and some published misidentifications are corrected.

Zootaxa, 2019Co-Authors: Magdi S Elhawagry, Hathal Al M DhaferAbstract:Bombyliidae, also known as "Bee flies", is one of the dipteran families that have species of potential use as biological control agents, as their larvae are predators or parasitoids of eggs, larvae, prepupae or pupae of other insects. The hosts of Bombyliidae are found within six orders of insects: Lepidoptera, Orthoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, and Neuroptera, in addition to the arachnid order Araneae (Spiders). However, almost half of all host records are from bees and wasps (Hymenoptera). The present work provides a catalogue of bee flies (Family Bombyliidae) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Old World synonymies, type localities, world distributions by biogeographic realm(s) and country, Saudi Arabian localities and dates of collection are provided. A total of 116 species belonging to 40 genera, 12 tribes and 10 subfamilies has been catalogued. Hosts and/or habitat data, where known, are given under the proper genera and/or species. Colored photographs of some species are provided.

ZooKeys, 2015Co-Authors: Magdi S Elhawagry, Hathal Al M DhaferAbstract:Five bee-fly species (Bombyliidae, Diptera) have been listed in this paper as new to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Four of the recorded species have been identified to the level of species, namely: Bombomyia discoidea (Fabricius, 1794), Spogostylum candidum (Sack, 1909), Exoprosopa linearis Bezzi, 1924, and Exoprosopa minos (Meigen, 1804), while the fifth one only to genus, Desmatoneura sp. The species have been collected from Al-Baha and Asir Provinces in the south-western part of the Kingdom. One of the four identified species, Exoprosopa linearis, has an Afrotropical affinity, and another two, Spogostylum candidum and Bombomyia discoidea, have considerable Afrotropical distributions, and this result agrees to some extent with studies considering these parts of the Arabian Peninsula, including Al-Baha and Asir Provinces, having Afrotropical influences and may be included in the Afrotropical Region rather than in the Palaearctic Region or the Eremic zone.

The species was collected from Garf Raydah Protected Area, Abha, Asir Province, south-western part of Saudi Arabia, using a Malaise trap erected in a site rich in olive, cactus and Juniper trees. The type locality has an Afrotropical influence, with the Afrotropical elements predominant, and a closer affiliation to the Afrotropical region than to the Palearctic region or the Eremic zone.

Zoology in The Middle East, 2014Co-Authors: Magdi S Elhawagry, Francis GilbertAbstract:The distributions of 229 beefly (Diptera: Bombyliidae) species across the eight Egyptian ecological zones, together with their faunal affinities to the main zoogeographical regions, were used to test the suggestion of Holt et al. (2013) that the SaharoArabian is a distinct region rather than a subregion of the Palaearctic. All Egyptian ecological zones but one have greater affiliation to the Palaearctic and SaharoArabian than to the Afrotropical region; the Gebel Elba ecological zone, the southeastern triangle of Egypt, has greater affinities with the Afrotropics. Affinities to the Saharo-Arabian region were not different from those to the Palaearctic. From its bombyliid fauna, therefore, the Saharo-Arabian region is so closely allied to the Palaearctic as to constitute merely a subregion of it. Sinai shows a high level of endemism reflecting its isolation from other parts of Egypt.

a preliminary study on the insect fauna of al baha province saudi arabia with descriptions of two new species

A total number of 582 species and subspecies (few identified only to the genus level) belonging to 129 families and representing 17 orders were recorded. Two of these species are described as new, namely: Monomorium sarawatensis Sharaf & Aldawood, sp. n. [Formicidae, Hymenoptera] and Anthrax alruqibi El-Hawagry sp. n. [Bombyliidae, Diptera]. Another eight species are recorded for the first time in Saudi Arabia, namely: Xiphoceriana arabica (Uvarov, 1922) [Pamphagidae, Orthoptera], Pyrgomorpha conica (Olivier, 1791) [Pyrgomorphidae, Orthoptera], Catopsilia florella (Fabricius, 1775) [Pieridae, Lepidoptera], Anthrax chionanthrax (Bezzi, 1926) [Bombyliidae, Diptera], Spogostylum near tripunctatum Pallas in Wiedemann, 1818 [Bombyliidae, Diptera], Cononedys dichromatopa (Bezzi, 1925) [Bombyliidae, Diptera], Mydas sp. [Mydidae, Diptera], and Hippobosca equina Linnaeus, 1758 [Hippoboscidae, Diptera]. Al-Baha Province is divided by huge and steep Rocky Mountains into two main sectors, a lowland coastal plain at the west, known as “Tihama”, and a mountainous area with an elevation of 1500 to 2450 m above sea level at the east, known as “Al-Sarat or Al-Sarah” which form a part of Al-Sarawat Mountains range. Insect species richness in the two sectors (Tihama and Al-Sarah) was compared, and the results showed that each of the two sectors of Al-Baha Province has a unique insect community. The study generally concluded that the insect faunal composition in Al-Baha Province has an Afrotropical flavor, with the Afrotropical elements predominant, and a closer affiliation to the Afrotropical region than to the Palearctic region or the Eremic zone. Consequently, we tend to agree with those biogeographers who consider that parts of the Arabian Peninsula, including Al-Baha Province, should be included in the Afrotropical region rather than in the Palaearctic region or the Eremic zone.
