People often turn to their mobile phones to seek that stimulation. In this paper, we tackle the challenge of automatically inferring Boredom from mobile phone usage. In a two-week in-the-wild study, we collected over 40,000,000 usage logs and 4398 Boredom self-reports of 54 mobile phone users. We show that a user-independent machine-learning model of Boredom --leveraging features related to recency of communication, usage intensity, time of day, and demographics-- can infer Boredom with an accuracy (AUCROC) of up to 82.9%. Results from a second field study with 16 participants suggest that people are more likely to engage with recommended content when they are bored, as inferred by our Boredom-detection model. These findings enable Boredom-triggered proactive recommender systems that attune their users' level of attention and need for stimulation.

Boredom: What Is It Good For?
The Function of Emotions, 2018Co-Authors: James Danckert, Jhotisha Mugon, Andriy A. Struk, John D. EastwoodAbstract:Boredom is an ubiquitous and consequential human emotion. This chapter argues that it functions as a self-regulatory signal indicating that our cognitive resources are not engaged. It provides a definition of state Boredom before developing the broad notion that trait Boredom represents a chronic disposition toward maladaptively responding to the Boredom signal (i.e., state Boredom). The chapter reviews the nascent research employing functional neuroimaging to understand Boredom and casts it as being mired in the “here and now” with no clear avenues for escape. Next, it outlines a specific hypothesis that trait Boredom arises in circumstances of regulatory non-fit – when our preferred mode of goal pursuit does not match our current behavior. Finally, the chapter explores the notion that state Boredom is not intrinsically good or bad. The signal itself does not evaluate what we are doing in any obvious way but merely indicates that change is needed.

Does state Boredom cause failures of attention? Examining the relations between trait Boredom, state Boredom, and sustained attention
Experimental brain research, 2016Co-Authors: Andrew G. Hunter, John D. EastwoodAbstract:Boredom is an important personal and social problem, but the phenomena itself remains poorly understood. Recent work has shown that Boredom is highly related to attention, and that this relationship may be instrumental in revealing Boredom’s causes and consequences. In this paper, experimental findings on trait Boredom, state Boredom, and sustained attention performance are presented. We demonstrate that trait Boredom uniquely predicts sustained attention performance, over and above depression and self-report attention problems. We also present exploratory findings consistent with the claim that attention failures may cause Boredom and that sustained attention tasks may themselves be boring. Discussion of each of these findings, and potential ramifications for cognitive research as a whole, is included.

Causes of Boredom: The person, the situation, or both?

EastwoodAbstract:Abstract Some theories emphasize the role of the situation, some emphasize the role of the person, and some emphasize the interaction between situation and person in causing Boredom. The present study examines these models by determining whether Boredom propensity (person) and/or experimental condition (situation) independently or in interaction affected state Boredom. The study also examined the relative contribution of behavioural activation and inhibition to state Boredom. Boredom propensity and condition significantly and independently predicted state Boredom, as did the interaction between behavioural inhibition and condition. Implications are discussed, including the possibility of two distinct causes of Boredom.

Eastwood, Alexandra Frischen, Mark J Fenske, Daniel SmilekAbstract:Our central goal is to provide a definition of Boredom in terms of the underlying mental processes that occur during an instance of Boredom. Through the synthesis of psychodynamic, existential, arousal, and cognitive theories of Boredom, we argue that Boredom is universally conceptualized as "the aversive experience of wanting, but being unable, to engage in satisfying activity." We propose to map this conceptualization onto underlying mental processes. Specifically, we propose that Boredom be defined in terms of attention. That is, Boredom is the aversive state that occurs when we (a) are not able to successfully engage attention with internal (e.g., thoughts or feelings) or external (e.g., environmental stimuli) information required for participating in satisfying activity, (b) are focused on the fact that we are not able to engage attention and participate in satisfying activity, and (c) attribute the cause of our aversive state to the environment. We believe that our definition of Boredom fully accounts for the phenomenal experience of Boredom, brings existing theories of Boredom into dialogue with one another, and suggests specific directions for future research on Boredom and attention.

Boredom an emotional experience distinct from apathy anhedonia or depression

Researchers have yet to agree on a unified definition of Boredom and many see it as a secondary symptom to other psychological states (e.g., apathy depression). We explored the relationship between Boredom and three phenomenologically related states; apathy, anhedonia and depression. Structural equation modeling revealed that although related to each state to varying degrees, Boredom is empirically distinct. Establishing Boredom as an independent construct provides an important step in bringing the field closer to a universally accepted definition of the experience, which will ultimately facilitate more effective assessment and treatment of Boredom.

HakanenAbstract:Purpose Job Boredom is an amotivational state at work, where employees lack interest in their work activities and have difficulties concentrating on them. Although recent research suggests that job Boredom may concern a wide range of industries, studies investigating the experience and its emergence in white-collar work are scarce. Thereby the purpose of this paper is to contextualize job Boredom by exploring the experience and its preconditions in white-collar work. Design/methodology/approach This inductive, exploratory study employed data from 13 focus group interviews (n=72) in four organizations to investigate the emergence and experience of job Boredom. Findings Three types of job Boredom was found. Each type involved distinct temporal experiences: inertia, acceleration and disrupted rhythm at work. The findings suggest that different types of job Boredom involve specific conditions that hamper the activation of individual capabilities and disrupt temporal experience accordingly. Research limitations/implications Extending the conceptualization of job Boredom may enable better understanding of the variety of consequences often associated with the phenomenon. Practical implications It is also important for organizations to recognize that there are different types and various preconditions of job Boredom in white-collar work, as it may have a negative impact on employee well-being and performance. Originality/value The results indicate that job Boredom is a more nuanced phenomenon than earlier believed. By identifying job Boredom in white-collar work as an experience with various forms and respective preconditions, this study expands the understanding of the phenomenon and its emergence.

Job Boredom and its correlates in 87 Finnish organizations.

SchaufeliAbstract:Objective: To investigate the correlates of job Boredom in 87 Finnish workplaces (N = 11,468) and to examine the associations between job Boredom, health outcomes, and job attitudes. Methods: We applied the Dutch Boredom Scale to measure job Boredom. Hierarchical logistic regression analysis and odds ratio estimates were used for further examination of the variables. Results: Male, under-36-year-old employees and employees working in transportation, manufacturing, arts, recreation, and entertainment experienced the most job Boredom. Job Boredom increased the likelihood of employees' turnover and early retirement intentions, poor self-rated health, poor workability, and stress symptoms. Conclusions: Job Boredom is a phenomenon that concerns a wide range of industries. We found a clear association between job Boredom and negative health- and work-related perceptions. The results support the notion that job Boredom can be harmful to employee health.
