Effects of experimental amitraz intoxication in cats [Efeitos da intoxicação experimental por amitraz em gatos]

Sixteen cats were randomly divided equally into two groups: amitraz group- animals received 1.5 % amitraz at 1mg/kg IV; and the control group- animals without amitraz. Physiological parameters from blood, cardiorespiratory system, and sedation indicators were quantified over time up to 360 minutes. Blood profile, urea, creatinine, alananine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase were not affected by amitraz. Sedation, loss of reflexes, hypothermia, bradycardia, bradyarrhythmia, hypotension, Bradypnea, mydriasis, besides transitory hyperglycemia, hypoinsulinemia and decrease of cortisol levels were observed in cats experimentally exposed to amitraz. The D2-adrenergic effects induced by amitraz intoxication in cats are very similar to the same effects reported in others species, contributing with more information about this type of intoxication to veterinary toxicology

The main clinical signs observed in common were sedation, hypothermia, bradycardia, bradyarrhytmia, hypotension, Bradypnea, mydriasis and transitory hyperglycemia, however the intensity of these signs was different among the species. The hypothermia was more accentuated in cats than in dogs. The dogs were more sensitive to the cardiorespiratory alterations presenting more significant decrease in the heart and breathing frequency, besides occurrence of larger bradyarrhytmia number. The cats presented more prolong mydriasis than the dogs. It was observed hyperglycemia and transitory hypoinsulinemia and transitory decrease of the plasmatic levels of cortisol, however the cats presented a hyperglycemia pick more accentuated and more precocious than the dogs, and regarding the plasmatic levels of cortisol, the dogs presented a decrease more accentuated than the cats. In the medium time of return of the sedation smaller in cat. yohimbine and atipamezole on the treatment of experimentally induced amitraz intoxication in cats
2006Co-Authors: Silvia Franco Andrade, Fabiola SangiorgioAbstract:Experimental amitraz intoxication and its reversal by atipamezole and yohimbine were studied in cats. Twenty four cats were randomly divided equally into 3 groups: Group A (amitraz); Group AY (amitraz/yohimbine) and Group AA (amitraz/atipamezole). Sedation, loss of reflexes, hypothermia, bradycardia, bradyarrhythmia, hypotension, Bradypnea, mydriasis, and initial transitory hyperglycemia occurred in Group A. Median intervals for sedation return, in minutes, were significantly lower in amitraz-intoxicated cats treated with either yohimbine or atipamezole. Yohimbine and atipamezole were very effective in the treatment of amitraz intoxication, although atipamezole was more effective in reversal of arrhythmias, mydriasis, and sedation induced by this acaricide in cats.

The main risk factors for sUDeP are associated with poorly controlled seizures, suggesting that most cases of sUDeP are seizure- related events. Dysregulation in cardiac and respiratory physiology, dysfunction in systemic and cerebral circulation physiology, and seizure-induced hormonal and metabolic changes might all contribute to sUDeP. Cardiac factors include bradyarrhythmias and asystole, as well as tachyarrhythmias and alterations to cardiac repolarization. Altered electrolytes and blood pH, as well as the release of catecholamines, modulate cardiac excitability and might facilitate arrhythmias. respiratory symptoms are not uncommon during seizures and comprise central apnea or Bradypnea, and, less frequently, obstruction of the airways and neurogenic pulmonary edema. Alterations to autonomic function, such as a reduction in heart rate variability or disturbed baroreflex sensitivity, can impair the body's capacity to cope with challenging situations of elevated stress, such as seizures. Here, we summarize data on the incidence of and risk factors for sUDeP, and consider the pathophysiological aspects of chronic epilepsy that might lead to sudden death. we suggest that sUDeP is caused by the fatal coexistence of several predisposing and triggering factors.

Parâmetros fisiológicos sangüíneos, do sistema cardiorespiratório e de sedação foram aferidos até 360min. Perfil sangüíneo, uréia, creatinina, alanina aminotransferase e aspartato aminotransferase não foram afetados pelo amitraz. Sedação, perda de reflexos, hipotermia, bradicardia, bradiarritmias, hipotensão, bradipnéia, midríase, além de transitória hiperglicemia, hipoinsulinemia e diminuição dos níveis de cortisol, foram observados nos gatos experimentalmente expostos ao amitraz. Os efeitos alfa 2-adrenérgicos induzidos pela intoxicação por amitraz em gatos são muito similares aos mesmos efeitos relatados em outras espécies, contribuindo com mais informações dessa intoxicação para a toxicologia veterinária.This work studied the effects of experimental amitraz intoxication in cats.
