    Abstract:

The annual publication of the students of Picture Butte High School, Picture Butte, Alberta. (Volume 1974-1975)pdfSerenity is neither frivolity, nor complacency, It is the highest knowledge and love, It is the affirmation of all reality Being awake at the edge of all deep and abysses. Serenity is the secret of beauty And the real substance of all art. Hermann Hesse Seek not to have that everything Should happen as you, wish, But wish for everything to happen As it actually does happen, And you will be serene. EPICTETUS What is the use of love, good fortune, knowledge, and riches, If you do not give yourself time To enjoy them in leisure. Gleichen-Russwurm IN DEDICATION TO MRS. MARION COURT The yearbook staff would like to dedicate the 1975 Tributeen to Mrs. M. Court for her many years of service to Picture Butte High School. Mrs. Court has been associated with the school for thirty-two years and retired in June, 1975. We would like to wish her the best in the future and to express our thanks for her guidance. 8 9 Editors Message Friends: This has been a year full of activities. The yearbook staff and myself sincerely hope we have captured the high-lites in everyone’s year. I would like to thank Mr. Ellefson, our staff advisor, for his help and encouragement throughout the year. A special thanks to Mr. Jensen and the Visual Communication classes for their picture processing; and to all those that had a part in producing the 1974-75 school term yearbook. I hope for continued success to all future graduates of Picture Butte High and remember: In spite of all our wanderings happiness is always found within a narrow compass and among objects which lie within our immediate reach. 10 Principal's Message Each school is different. Each graduating class is its own. The 1974-75 school year at Picture Butte High School might best be described as one of action, but action with direction. While this class will be remembered for its very fine academic record, it may not even be matched for its truly outstanding athletic achievements. The quality of leadership provided by the 1974-75 graduates of Picture Butte High School must be recorded as first rate. While these young people "may never pass this way again," they are certainly entitled to look back at their graduating year with a sense of pride in their accomplishments. It is after all, performance that really counts. The 1974-75 school year will also be recalled as the year Mrs. Marion Court concluded an outstanding career as a teacher. The contributions she has made to education in the Picture Butte community have been both generous and enduring. Her competent manner will be greatly missed in the administration of the educational program in Picture Butte High School. Mr. G. Hanna 11 Vice Principal's Message It is difficult to say good-bye to a school with which one has been associated for thirty-two years. However, I take with me many wonderful memories. Thank-you students of Picture Butte High. I wish for each of you, all that is good in life. "Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here" Desiderata My toast to you, your school motto: "Pour Bonheur, Honneur et Succes" Marion Court Congratulations to the Graduates of 1975. I sincerely hope that all of your plans materialize. Strive for individual superiority—but be yourself. Doug Dudley people 13 Teaching Staff Mrs. R. Ahluwalia Mr. D. Becklund Mr. J. Brosz Mrs. M. The student’s council, too, has had a successful year. Frosh Week was especially a notable activity, as it has been deemed the biggest success of the year. Although there were a couple of activities that did not turn out nearly as well, on the whole this year's council did a very commendable job. On behalf of the 1974-75 council, I would like to thank Mr. Becklund and Mr. Gibbons for their help this year; also to the students and teachers for allowing our council to be such a major part of the achool. Good luck to next year’s council. Shelley Dickout 40 JUNIOR HIGH STUDENT’S COUNCIL Standing: Mr. Luyten (advisor), Leonard Mrazek, Scott Richardson, Rob Moriyama, Cal Sucher Seating: Irene Sereda, Esther Oga, Terry Kariatsumari, Donna Thurlow Missing: MaryAnn Vogel During the 74-75 school year, the Junior High Student’s Council did not have very many activities, but the ones we did have were fun. In these activities, we did such things as; having record hops and Easter and Christmas assemblies. There was one problem about the record hops. Many people participated in them, but only junior high was invited. This caused alot of trouble for the older people, leading to fewer record hops at the end of the year. If the council had more cooperation from the students, it would have been a better year. However, the Easter and Christmas assemblies were more successful. The student’s council also donated a sum of money to the Band Scholarship and the Yearbook staff which was accumulated from the magazine sales. In the magazine sales, we raised a fair amount of money. We were quite pleased with the effort that the students put into it. Thanks alot! We decided to do something different this year. It was the kindergarten children’s first year at our school, so we helped them out by celebrating their Christmas and Easter parties with them. It was alot of fun. Next year let's get some new activities going by helping the student’s council. It might even be a better year than this one. Good luck! We would like to thank our staff advisor, Mr. Luyten, for influencing our ideas. The Mustangs, trailing 27-15 with less than three minutes remaining, got a touchdown and a two-point convert from star running back Paul Blayney to narrow the gap and then had several hundred chilly spectators on their feet when they recovered a Picture Butte fumble on their own 54-yard line. Five plays later, High River had marched to the 19-yard line, but the Picture Butte defence came up big, forcing Mustang quarterback Ray Tupkai to unload in a hurry and throw three incomplete passes. The Elks took over first and ten and, two plays later, the gun sounded with the Elks reigning as 1974 Foothills champions. The Western Division champion Mustangs had dominated the early going, but failed to get on the scoreboard when twice fullback Craig Spangler lost the handle on long passes with touchdown written all over them. A third-down gamble which turned into a 63-yard run by Hal Nummi set up the first Picture Butte major late in the first quarter. Only a diving tackle by Wade Cooper at the four-yard line prevented Nummi from going all the way. However, three plays later, John Deak took the ball from Elk quarterback Bryan Heninger and went five yards on an end-around play to open the scoring. Leroy Wamsteeker converted to give Picture Butte a 7-0 lead. Early in the second quarter, the Elks took a 13-0 lead on a 43-yard pass and run touchdown from Heninger to Rod Malchow. High River came right back with a touchdown of their own to narrow the gap to 13-7. Paul Blayney went over the goal line untouched from seven yards out to culminate a 54- yard drive that took ten plays, and Craig Spangler converted. Ray Tupkal’s 34-yard single cut the gap to 13-8 midway through the quarter and then Tupkai hit Spangler on a 38- yard pass play to put the Mustangs into the lead. Spangler added the convert to make it 15-13 as the two clubs headed for the dressing rooms. The cold weather began to take its toll in the third quarter, as neither.club could hang onto the ball long enough to sustain a scoring march. However, early in the final frame, pass interference and roughing penalties on the same play gave Picture Butte the ball on the Mustang 13- yard line. Four plays later, Heninger followed his left guard into the end zone from the one and Wamsteeker converted to regain the lead for the Elks at 20-15. Wade Richardson recovered a Mustang fumble minutes later at his own 40-yard line and, two plays later, Mike Oliver broke a pair of tackles at the line of scrimmage and romped 61 yards for a major score. Wamsteeker connected again on the convert to give the Elks their widest margin at 27-15. Blayney’s late touchdown was set up when a high snap forced the Picture Butte punter to run with the ball on third down. He was hauled down and the Mustangs took over on the Elk 38-yard line. A pass on the halfback option from Dave Percifield to Craig Spangler moved the ball to the three and Blayney spun over on the next play. Blayney was the outstanding individual on the field in a losing cause. He carried the ball 41 times to rack up 273 yards, and also caught a pair of passes for another 24 yards. Altogether the Mustangs rushed for 310 yards and passed for another 149. Spangler was the leading receiver in the game, hauling in five passes for 118 yards. Picture Butte compiled an amazing 438 yards on the ground, led by the 198-yard performance of Hal Nummi, who packed the pigskin 23 times. The Elks will be presented with the Foothills Football Conference Championship Trophy at the league’s annual awards banquet at Raymond Wednesday night. YARD STICKS - Picture Butte had some troubles in the first half, but once they settled down to their power running attack in the fourth quarter, their superiority showed through . . . only a couple of breaks put the Mustangs back in the game ... the outstanding defensive player of the game had to be Picture Butte’s Marvin Bebek, who was keying on Blayney and probably made as many tackles as the hard-running back made carries ... it was High River’s first loss of the season . . . they went through five league contests and a pair of playoff encounters unscathed. 57 Activities 59 Frosh Week Dress Up Day Athletics Awards JUNIOR HIGH GIRLS BASKETBALL Terry Kariatsumari Donna Thurlow JUNIOR HIGH BOYS BASKETBALL Rod Maichow Scott Richardson JUNIOR HIGH VOLLEYBALL Donna Thurlow Kevin Reiter CAREER ATHLETES Shelley Dickout Marvin Bebek Terry Hanna Bryan Heninger SENIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL Shelley Dickout MVP

The Rubik's Cube craze hit the school with full force; bewildered students were found everywhere solving the puzzle. The classrooms once again filled with familiar sounds of laughter and the latest gossip. And, as one can see here, a hearty lunch was enjoyed by all. There was quite an array of creepy creatures, ghostly ghouls, and lovely lasses. The Junior High Student Council organized a noon-hour dance and gave prizes for the best costumes. Senior high students also participated and had a great time. All in all, it was a wickedly fun occasion. 9 Frosh Day Once again the Grade Ten newcomers received their well-deserved welcome into Senior High. Each and every one of them were given a fair share of the festivities! Toilet paper races, broken eggs and a special noose for Jim Zalesak highlighted the bash. Despite a few runaways, the initiates were great sports and took the day in stride. 10 11 MONTREAL EXCHANGE The exchange between twenty Montreal students and twenty PBHS students was a "SMASHING" success. This fantastic trip took place in November (when they came here), and March (when we went there). The Montreal group was amazed at the "wide open plains", the "animals" on the farms, and the unique lifestyle we Albertans led. However, when we visited the dazzling city of Montreal, many surprises were to be found also. A highlight (for some) was meeting Prime Minister Trudeau in the House of Commons. And yet for others, a fantastic experience was seeing an NHL game at "The Forum". In general, we were all astounded by the variety of life in the East. Even though we all marvelled at the sites of this huge city, we definitely appreciated coming home to "GOOD OLE PICTURE Butte". 12 13 Bisons Front: David Smith, Rod Casson, Dean Savva Back: Henry Jones, Albert Wogen, Darren Mazutinec, Randy Hellwig Bisonettes Front: Judy Nemeth, Shauna Marshall, Tracy Lawlor, Debbie Dunn, Carolyn Odegard, Tammy Blair Back: Paula Koenen, Mr. Harvey (coach), Rosalind Harvey, Tammy Deimuth Cynthia Egger, Brenda Irvine, Erin Reiter, Peggy Vaner Linden (manager) The Bisonettes and Badgerettes had a very successful year. Though we may say we're glad to be leaving the "sometimes" everlasting grind of our school days, we all hold a lot of fond memories too. Some of us have known each other since kindergarten and others met when we started high school. Never-the-less, we all are a part of this school and this class, and that makes us each special. In our first home, our parents started us off in life with great aspirations and goals. For their encouragement and belief in us, we are grateful. They kept their cool when we brought home bad reports, and they continually urged us to turn off the T.V. to accomplish some studying. In our second home, the teachers continued to guide and inspire us in developing our individual ambitions whether it be seeking a fob, furthering our studies, or pursuing our special talents as singers, comedians or track-stars. We sometimes feel they pushed us a little too hard but without their concern, we wouldn't be here tonight. On this day, we also acknowledge the companionship and support from our friends. Their lending hand and listening ear were more than welcome in sharing the good and bad times throughout the years. Today we see graduation not as an end to twelve years of education, but rather as the beginning of our lifetime experience. We've matured not only through our academic education but through our social education as well, blow we must apply all the values we've learnt to successfully adapt to the world situation as it is today. This definitely is not the easiest goal to accomplish, lob opportunities are scarce, secondary education costs are continually rising, and competition is forever increasing. But these problems can be overcome with patience and dedication on our part. Together, we’ve all had the same basic start with our education but the different paths we choose to follow will separate and acknowledge us as individuals. We all look forward to being noticed as an adult but we also hold some fears for the responsibility and demands that adult life entails. Our dreams for tomorrow can only become reality if we continue to work and strive for our goals. We are the masters of our own destinies so it's up to us to make the most of our lives. As we embark on our own journey, let us view life with open minds. Even with all our education, we still have a lot of knowledge and wisdom to aquire so let us respect the words and thoughts of others. It's our decisions, judgements, and actions that shape the foundation for the future society. So now as we prepare to live our adult lives, let us remember who we are and what we stand for. I hope we all find love, happiness, and enjoyment as we seek to fulfill our destinies. Abstract:

The annual publication of the students of Picture Butte High School, Picture Butte, Alberta. (Volume 1968-1969)pdfI j TRIBUTEEN MRS. RUBY COOK Friendship’s gold That never turns to rust, The gold of wisdom, Love and hope and trust, The gold of quiet, And the gold of peace, The gold of living With its rich increase, God’s gold of faith, The gold of true success, And most of all, the gold of happiness. Our most fitting tribute is the high esteem felt by present and former students and staff Fellow Students: This year it has been my pleasure to be the Picture Butte High School’s Yearbook Editor. First of all, I would like to express my thanks to all those who co-operated with me and my staff, and a special thanks goes to my co-workers without whom this book could not have been assembled. We have done our best and we feel we have a good yearbook. To those who are not satisfied with it I would like to say one thing: A school yearbook is only as successful as you make it. Did you do your part? This has been a year of many new faces and a new school, a year of work and of play, and for the Grade Twelves, a final step onto the bright horizon of the future. 1 would like to express my sincere good wishes to the graduating class and I would like to thank the whole student body of P.E.H.S. for making this, my last year, one full of memories, memories preserved forever In the Trlbuteen. May this book bring back as many wonderful memories for you as it will for me. In a dynamic society such as ours, the role of both the teacher and the student is ever changing as we attempt to provide that atmosphere or situation which will best achieve our purpose. Despite this changing nature of the school situation, it seems there are two attributes which students must attain in order to achieve maximum self-realization These attributes have remained constant within this dynamic society. A student must develope respect - a respect for his culture and a respect for his fellow man, a respect for his school and the rights of the people in that school. A student must develope and build a respect for the purpose of school. The second attribute which a student must attain is that of self-discipline. Through self-discipline the student will contribute to that atmosphere which will allow him to receive the maximum benefit from school. The development of self-respect and respect for the objectives of education will be realized most readily by that student who is self-disciplined. Front- Tom Haney- Boy’s Sports Rep. The 1968-69 academic year In the Picture Butte Junior High Is noteworthy since this was the first year of Its establishment and also for Its achievements In the area of student government. The Idea of student government In such an early stage Is almost always taken lightly by both the students and faculty. Not so by the Picture Butte Junior High. The principal of self-government that has always been fostered by the Senior High Is now Installed deeply within the Junior High. It must be responsible to those It serves and Its objectives must be the welfare of the governed. It Is a great honor and privilege to write a summary of the year’s activities. The year has flowen by very quickly. Embarking on Its first year the council did Its best to fulfill the desires and wishes of the students. The dances and assemblies were a success due not only to organization but to the spirit and participation of the students. A few projects were initiated, some successful, others not. Athletics were very successful as shown by the basketball and track and field squads. It was gratifying to see the students participating In all the activities. I would like to extend my appreciation to Mr. Dudley and all the teachers for their tolerance and advice. The members of the council also deserve congratulations for the time and effort they put In. I hope I have contributed something, however small to the betterment of the school. In return for all that it has given to me. Finally I would like to wish good luck to the new president. Abstract:

The annual publication of the students of Picture Butte High School, Picture Butte, Alberta. (Volume 1980-1981)pdfDedicated to Mr. Hanna Mr. Hanna In September, 1966, Mr. George Hanna was appointed Principal of P.B.H.S. and served his last year in the 1980-81 school term. In his fifteen years as Principal, approximately twelve hundred and fifty students graduated from P.B.H.S. which included daughters Donna and Bev, and sons Terry and Murray. Mr. Hanna also spent eight years as coach of the school's senior boys basketball team. "P.B.H.S. will always have pleasant memories for Rosalie, myself, and our family. We leave with many good feelings for the school and its students." Our best wishes to you always Mr. Hanna. Good luck at Kate Andrews High School. In Memory of KARRI SUCHER February 4, 1966 - July 30, 1980 It's hard to endure the pain of having to part with someone who has been a part of you, Sharing your dreams, your hopes, your laughter. But having still the memories of the happy times as well as the troubled times between friends puts a smile on our faces. Within its walls we matured chosing both our friends and our foe. We developed scholastically and socially to become people as well as students. Though many days did seem to last an eternity, each made us more aware of the people around us, and, of course, each eventually did end. We must thank our parents for kicking us out of bed on those cold mornings, and our teachers for waking us up. If it were not for their persistence and guidance we wouldn't be here today. But as we leave this second home of ours, we must carry with us the many values we have learned. -Let us respect those whose experience and stature deserve our respect, but not so much as to defeat the purpose of human equality. -Let us tolerate those whose ideals and opinions may be different than ours, but not so much as to ignore their presence. -Let us accept those things we cannot change but not be so blind as to forget the difference between right and wrong. -Let us understand what must change but not be so neglectful as to not voice our opinions on what should be changed. -Let us listen to what will aid our personal development, but not conform so much as to lose our individualism. -Let us be grateful to those who have brought us so far, for without the help of our parents and teachers the future would not have looked so bright. -Let us be thankful for our friends,-their companionship and support can smooth the roughest roads we may travel. -Let us continue to learn, but not become so involved in our education as to forget the small pleasures in life. But most of all-Let us care for ourselves and our world, since our decisions and our values will shape the society we now enter, we are new adults, but let us never forget who we are, where we have been, and what we stand for. Abstract:

The annual publication of the students of Picture Butte High School, Picture Butte, Alberta. (Volume 1971-1972)pdf1972 SO IT GOES YEAR AFTER YEAR EACH EVENT KEANS SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO EACH STUDENT: BUT EACH STUDENT ALWAYS HAS A SPECIAL FEELING FOR WHAT WAS HIS We have discovered many nrecious things in this school-friendshin, knowledge, hanpiness. We worked, we learned, we lived. We were challenged by our teachers and our parents, and we shall continue to be challenged as we begin the new 1ife that lies beyond. Although we will be separated our memories of P3HS will linper on. 4 Lane of Memory Along- the lane of memory The blossoms never fade, For near and far, still cherished are The friendships we have made. - Sdpar A. Guest 5 You are and you will always be The dearest kind of friend to me — For friends who accent us as we are. Are the most treasured friends by far. 6 7 FOR OTHERS YOU WILL FIND, AS YOU LOOK BACK UPON YOUR LIFE, THAT THE MOMENTS THAT STAND OUT ARE THE MOMENTS WHEN YOU HAVE DONE THINGS FOR OTHERS - Henry Drummond This year has been one, fall of new faces and memories, laughter and sadness. I have attempted to capture a few of these precious moments, and preserve them on paper for you. I would like to thank Mr. Young for his assistance throughout the whole year. He seemed to be around whenever I needed him. But most of all, I would like to thank my wonderful staff. They worked hard, with and without me, to create this yearbook for you. The time it took to complete this yearbook has been well worth it - a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun. We, the yearbook staff of 1972, are very pleased with the results, and we hope you will be, too. In closings THE PROPER OFFICE OF A FRIEND IS TO SIDE WITH YOH WHEN YOU ARE IN THE WRONG. NEARLY ANYBODY WILL SIDE WITH YOU WHEN YOU ARE RIGHT. - Mark Twain 9 My best to you - MY GOAL Give me a will to win. not a comnetitive snirit; but a will to work until the finish line is behind me. Let me see the signs that show I’m progressing, .just often enough to snur me on. but not too often that I might begin to glory in my own sneed. Show me why this race must be run, and how the nrize will be worth all to the winner. Let my mind be clearly acquainted with all the rules. Keen me conscious that the officials of this race are my friends and that at the final cross of the line there will be only one Judge. Let me see the neonle on the sidelines only as those whom I may insnire to .join with me in this all-important race. May I never stumble over a nebble but may I always take those in stride, never slowing my race for their cause. Keen me aware of the fact that there is a way over even the boulders in my oath when I follow the chartered route. When as the wjnner I break the ribbon, may I be one to welcome those who ran right behind me all the way! - Janet Kee ARTHUR RIDEWOOD, M.D. He debated whether as a noet to have dreams and beans or as a physician have a long car and caviar Dividing his time between both he died from a nervous breakdown caused by worry from rejection slins and final notices from the Finance company. - Frank Marshall Davis 10 Congratulations and best wishes to the erads of 1979. I hone your nlans and your dreams become realities and I am confident they will if your continue to strive. Then, the lives of those around you will be enriched because you have much to offer. 11 ” LIFE IS A GRINDSTONE. Who knows? But we can be sure that we are looking at nart of Canada's next governing citizens. We will then be the "establishment'. It will be our decisions that will make or break Canada. So let's make some decisions to end wars, end pollution and control our nonulation explosion. It is not enough that Canada "stand together. understand together" but that the world must also understand together. 1972 This year, we, the council, tried our best despite some restrictions placed upon us. We are sorry we could not have a band, instead of the usual record hops, and the weather kept our swimming and skating parties from existing. We still had fun though. The record hops always had something new and exciting. The Sadie Hawkins Day had many interesting and complex costumes, and those who didn't dress up regretted it later. All in all, we didn't have a bad programme. On behalf of the Student's Council, I would like to thank Mr. Dudley for his assistance throughout the year. I would like to thank the students, who gave me the chance to make a contribution to my school. It was very enjoyable. We have waited a long time and now it is difficult to realize that this is our graduation. This evening brings us closer together. and as we recall common memories, we feel pride, elation and anticipation. We are proud of our accomplishments, elated with the evening’s honor, and are anticipating tomorrow’s success. But why are we graduating? To find those responsible, we need only to look around. Our first thanks go to our parents. They started by piving us life and have not stopped the flow of rifts. Without their encouragement, their time, their work, and their countless other devotions, we would not be here tonight. We must also thank our teachers. They, as well, have been generous with patience and understanding, and have always been around when they were needed. And we must thank each other for making school life more interesting and enjoyable. These twelve years of friendships have taucht us how to "get along" with each other: this may well be our key to success. But let us not forget the friends we have made while acquirinp this understandinp. 'We will miss each other but if we must be separated, let that be merely a physical separation. FRIENDS I WILL REMEMBER YOU THT'.tv OF YOU PRAY FOR YOU AND ’-HEN ANOTHER DAY IS THROUGH I’LL STILL BE FRIENDS WITH YOU Thank you parents, teachers, and classmates for the abundant knowledpe, the invaluable experience and the everlastinp friendships. What does this next year hold for us. That will depend on us as we must make things happen. All of us have the potential to learn, but potential alone is insufficient. A more important factor we have in our favor is ambition. We shall set our goals high enough to provide a challenge, yet close enough to be attainable. As we pre varied individuals, we have a variety of goals. Some of us will be attending post-secondary institutions, while others will be working in the practical world as a few of us are already. Whether we work directly with people as teachers, nurses, lawyers, or indirectly for them as engineers, electricians, accountants, we «re all basically humanitarians, and are aiming to improve tomorrow’s world. Our main target should be a time of understanding where war and segregation and other present evils of society are uon-existpnt. In doing this we must remember who we are and be honest with ourselves. We shall aim not for materialism, as materialism is too low a goal: but for a greater wealth, one described by William MacDonald . FOR THIS IS WEALTH - TO KNOW MY FOOT’S RETURNING IS ALWAYS MUSIC TO A FRIEND OF MINE. I would like to thank my fellow graduands for this honor given me and I can think of no better way to close than with Picture Butte High’s meaningful theme: Pour Bonheur, Honneur, et Succes, for happiness, honor and success. 28 Spade 11 Aldridge, Sharon Amundson, Alberta Amundson, Roland Baker, Carol Barvir, Gerald Batty, Laurie Benci, Dennis BergenHenengouwen, Joanne Bochensko, Irene Bodnar,Ken Boras, Robert Bosnjak. Abstract:

Feeding rats on a high-fat diet containing Butter naturally enriched in cis-9, trans-11 CLA prevented hyperinsulinemia and increased HDL cholesterol, which could be associated with higher levels of cis-9, trans-11 CLA, vaccenic acid, oleic acid and lower levels of short and medium-chain saturated fatty acids from Butter naturally modified compared to control Butter. On the other hand CLA-enriched Butter also increased serum triacylglycerol levels, which could be associated with concomitant increases in the content of trans-9 and trans-10 C18:1 isomers in the CLA-enriched Butter.201

  • inactivation of salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium and escherichia coli o157 h7 in peanut Butter cracker sandwiches by radio frequency heating
    Food Microbiology, 2013
    Co-Authors: Jaewon Ha, Donghyun Kang
    Abstract:

Abstract A multistate outbreak of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium recently occurred in the USA, which was traced back to various food products made with contaminated peanut Butter. This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of radio-frequency (RF) heating to inactivate S. Typhimurium and Escherichia coli O157:H7 in peanut Butter cracker sandwiches using creamy and chunky commercial peanut Butter and to determine the effect on quality by measuring color changes and sensory evaluation. Samples were treated for a maximum time of 90 s in a 27.12 MHz RF heating system. Samples were prepared in the form of peanut Butter cracker sandwiches and placed in the middle of two parallel-plate electrodes. After 90 s of RF treatment, the log reductions of S. Typhimurium and E. coli O157:H7 were 4.29 and 4.39 log CFU/g, respectively, in creamy peanut Butter. RF treatment of chunky peanut Butter for 90 s also significantly (P   0.05) different from the control. These results suggest that RF heating can be applied to control pathogens in peanut Butter products without affecting quality.

  • Destroying and Creating History: Butte, Montana’s Model City Program, 1968-1975
ScholarWorks at University of Montana, 2021
    Co-Authors: Stefanek, John C
    Abstract:

In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed the “Model Cities Act” into law. A part of Johnson’s Great Society, Model Cities was a national urban renewal program that sought to renew all aspects of society and included anything from the creation of parks and recreational facilities to increasing funding for senior citizens’ programs. My research examines the implementation of Model Cities in Butte, Montana. Whereas Model Cities was most visibly seen in metropolises like Detroit and Baltimore as a means to curtail riots and racial strife, the Butte program, in the words of the program’s director, James Murphy, wished to drag Butte into the twentieth century. I note that Butte, given its background as a resource extraction mining town, was in need of Model Cities. Lacking infrastructure and plagued by environmental woes, the Butte program had much potential due to its focus not only on urban renewal but social uplift. However, the program was also a source of great controversy. In attempting to urbanize and modernize Butte, one of the program’s largest endeavors was the destruction of hundreds of old buildings. I argue that the Butte program engaged in physical and cultural destruction to reform Butte. As urbanization became a more pressing issue in Montana, the replacement of historic buildings with new ones was meant to help detach Butteians from the past and make Butte a thriving urban center. And with a host of new social programs that targeted health issues like alcoholism, the program attempted to sever a longstanding Butte culture that resisted social aid and state assistance. I conclude that the program was partially successful in that it brought modern infrastructure and social programs to Butte but was unable to destroy Butte’s nostalgia of the past. My research is a thematic reconstruction of the Model Cities program in Butte from 1968-1975. This project examines the developments of three key goals of the program: economic development, physical environment, and social services. I tell the story of the Butte program through these three themes and explore how policies changed and developed from 1968-1974. Most essential in examining these themes are primary sources from the archival collections at the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library, Montana Historical Society, and the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives. The most present sources are Senator Mike Mansfield’s papers, which contain Buttiean concerns about the program, letters to Butte officials such as Mayor Mario Micone, and the outline of the Model Cities program. This research is the first substantive scholarship on the Butte program. Other scholars have overlooked the program but this paper places Model Cities as one of the key urban developments in Montana in the twentieth century and the most important urban renewal program in Butte’s history. Additionally, this paper contributes to the understanding of federal policymaking of the 1960s-1970s in showing the transition from LBJ’s Great Society to Richard Nixon’s New Federalist approach to urban renewal

  • THE RADICALISM OF REBECCA FELTON: REFORMING SOUTHERN MASCULINTY and CREATING AND DESTROYING HISTORY: Butte, MONTANA’S MODEL CITY PROGRAM, 1968-1975
    University of Montana, 2021
    Co-Authors: Stefanek, John C
    Abstract:

This professional paper is made up of two individual papers required for the M.A. degree in history. In my first paper, I discuss the radical suffragist Rebecca Felton. In 1897, Felton spoke to the Georgia Agricultural Society. Felton, a native Georgian who would later become the first female U.S. senator, gained prominence in the U.S. South as a politician, suffragist, and white supremacist. Her speech, “Woman on the Farm,” discussed the economic struggles of southern farmers. Felton’s speech also addressed a variety of controversial issues including agricultural economics on the farm, prison reform, and temperance. From the 1870s until her death in 1930, Felton used these specific issues to attack what she saw was the greatest threat to southern white women: southern white men. While Felton lived from 1835-1930, this analysis primarily examines her life from the 1880s-1920s. These years take place during the Progressive Era to compare Felton’s activism with other reformers at the time. Felton adopted the issues of prison reform and temperance—while sometimes overlapping with both southern suffrage and progressive movements—as her own issue of reforming southern masculinity to protect white women. In conducting this research, the Rebecca Latimer Felton Papers available digitally through the University of Georgia Library were essential. These papers document her life from 1851-1930 and remain the most detailed regarding Felton’s life and career. These papers have been utilized in some form in any modern study on Felton. Throughout these papers are Felton’s correspondence, personal papers, drafts of speeches and sermons given, and articles written throughout her career. In my second paper, I discuss the impact of the Model Cities program in Butte, Montana in the 1960s-70s. Whereas Model Cities was most visibly seen in metropolises like Detroit and Baltimore as a means to curtail riots and racial strife, the Butte program, in the words of the program’s director, James Murphy, wished to drag Butte into the twentieth century.
