    Abstract:

    We introduce virtual prepaid tokens (VPT), a novel billing scheme that allows users to obtain access at Wi-Fi hotspots without having an account with a hotspot provider or a physical prepaid token (PPT). Upon arrival at a hotspot, a user buys a VPT online, using a third-party payment server with which the user already has an account. Experiments show that users can buy a VPT and gain full Internet connectivity in less than 15 seconds, i.e. much less time than it would take to create another account or to buy and activate a PPT. VPT can be used in hotspots that use a Captive Portal or IEEE 802.1x for user authentication. The latter alternative enables better security. We also contribute a novel technique that allows a single access point to authenticate users by either method. Hotspots can use this solution for migrating to 802.1x without disrupting legacy Captive-Portal users. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed technique has little overhead and interoperates broadly.

    Abstract:

    Academic and commercial 802.11 hotspots often use an SSL-secured Captive Portal to authenticate clients. Captive Portals provide good usability and interoperability, but poor security. After a Captive Portal has authenticated a client, session hijacking and freeloading allow attackers to capture or use the client’s session. Freeloading does not require special tools and, surprisingly, is strengthened by the (widely recommended) use of personal firewalls. We propose and evaluate novel defenses against these attacks, session id checking and MAC sequence number tracking, both of which are transparent to clients and do not require changes in client computers. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed defenses are effective against the mentioned attacks and have little overhead.

    In order to quickly and properly handle a computer security incident or a network failure, it is necessary to identify a suspicious host and its user, and a network authentication is then necessary. Regarding wired LAN, web authentication can be feasible because a user does not need to configure his or her host in advance. There are, however, severe issues of web authentication that incurs very long delay. This paper reveals that the cause of this long delay is mainly by Windows update before an authentication. This paper then proposes the feasible web authentication using Captive-Portal detection that achieve simultaneous authentications of more than 40 clients.

Advertising media can be determined by location by combining 2 methods ie eoip and bridge for lan network while eoip, vpn and bridge on wan network. The results of this research has been working optimally and implemented in the network lan STIE Perbanas Surabaya while for wan network has been tested using the internet network in several locations civitas house.

    Dewasa ini penggunaan akses internet semakin tinggi baik itu sebagai kebutuhan pokok dalam menjalani dan mendukung pekerjaan setiap orang. Dengan dukungan teknologi terkini berkembang pula aplikasi, media dan cara mudah dalam mengakses jaringan internet baik itu melalui teknologi kabel maupun wireless. Salah satunya yang diminati saat ini adalah akses internet menggunakan jaringan hotspot, selain mudah dalam penggunaannya jaringan hotspot juga tidak membutuhkan banyak biaya dalam media atau perangkatnya. Sehingga pada saat ini sistem hotspot banyak digunakan oleh semua kalangan seperti ISP, perkatoran, sekolah, perguruan tinggi, hotel dan cafe. Media Hotspot memberikan metode keamanan melalui authentifikasi user melalui Captive Portal. Dalam Impementasi hotspot pada kampus STIE Perbanas Surabaya menggunakan Mikrotik Router sebagai Captive Portal dan user manajemen, sedangkan untuk wireless access point media yang digunakan untuk memancarkan wireless menggunakan controller accees point unifi. Hasil penelitian dapat bekerja dengan optimal pada manajemen tatakelola Captive Portal hotspot mikrotik yang mampu meningkatkan keamanan akses jaringan pada STIE Perbanas Surabaya. Sehingga mempermudah admin jaringan dalam memantau aktivitas user wifi yang sedang menggunakan jaringan hotspot. Berdasarkan hasil uji coba tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa sistem Captive Portal mikrotik hotspot dan unifi controller ini dapat diterapkan pada sistem hotspot STIE Perbanas Surabaya.
