    Abstract:

    BACKGROUND: The chemosterilisation technique has been demonstrated to reduce the population and fruit damage of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), in citrus orchards. Field trials showed efficacy by reducing the fruit fly population, which was progressively achieved by continuous application of lufenuron to several generations. Different authors have suggested that field trials should be carried out in isolated or wide areas in order to reduce fruit fly intrusion and obtain best results. To this end, a wide-area trial over 3600 hectares has been under investigation in Valencia (Spain) since 2002 to validate the chemosterilisation technique against the fruit fly. The whole area was treated with 24 traps ha−1, using more than 86 000 traps in the field trial. RESULTS: A continuous decrease in fruit fly population was observed over the 4 years under trial. Moreover, results showed a significant reduction in persimmon damage in the Chemosterilant treatment area compared with a malathion aerial treatment area. In the case of citrus damage, no significant differences were obtained between malathion and Chemosterilant treatments. CONCLUSION: The Chemosterilant method reduces Mediterranean fruit fly populations, and therefore it is a candidate treatment to replace aerial treatments with insecticides in order to suppress this pest. In addition, the efficacy of Chemosterilant treatment is increasing year after year. The possibility of using this technique combined with other control methods is discussed.   • Comparison of the Sterilizing Activity of Two Chemosterilants Against the Longicorn,Anoplophora glabripennis

    Abstract:

    In order to filter out a Chemosterilant which can be directly sprayed to sterilize the adults of Anoplophora glabripennis(Motschulsky) efficiently and to extend the method in vast area,two Chemosterilants(wettable powder) which were developed by the study group,called CSⅠ and CSⅡ,were adopted on the comparing experiment with there sterilizing activity against the longicorn.The comparison of mating behavior,number of oviposited eggs,hatching rate and life table under artificial rearing,was carried out after spraying the two Chemosterilants on the adults of the longicorn by a spray method which imitated the outdoor spray on trees.The results showed that the treatment spraying with CSⅡ after diluting it 20 times gained best sterile effects on the pest.

    Based on the successful screening experiments on some Chemosterilants in lab and in the field,the Chemosterilant CSⅡ(wettable powder)developed by the study group and proved to have best sterile effect against Tetranychus viennensis was selected for the determination of the acute toxicity and sterility against two silkworm breeds Xinsong and Xinyue,Bombyx mori L.The toxicity was determined by feeding the larvae with white mulberry leaves saturated with CSⅡ and the sterility determined by observing the second generation come from the crossbreed of the 2 breeds.The results are as follows: (1) CSⅡhas no acute toxicity to the silkworm;(2) CSⅡ has evident impact on the pupation of the worm,but has no evident impact on the emergence of the worm and no sterility against the silkworm;(3) the percentage of pupation is 84% when the concentration of CSⅡis 1.0%.So it is admitted that CSⅡcan be used against tetranychid mites in the mulberry garden at the concentration of 1.0% when the purpose of the garden is just feeding up a lot of cocoons of the silkworm. 1.0%when

  • Tests of Chemosterilant CSII for controling tetranychid mite Tetranychus viennensis in field

    Abstract:

    Based on the success of indoor experiment on screening some Chemosterilants, the tests were carried out to control the tetranychid mites, Tetranychus viennensis Zacher, in apple and mulberry gardens respectively by spraying the wettable powder of Chemosterilant CSⅡ, in order to know the chemical effect in the fields. Results showed that spraying the Chemosterilant CSⅡ diluted 100 times resulted in evident sterile effect. In apple garden, the average numbers of treated mites and contrasted mites were 15.267 and 36.333, respectively; in mulberry garden, the average numbers of treated mites and contrasted mites were 0.367 and 5.300, respectively. So, in mulberry garden the sterile effect of the Chemosterilant CSⅡ was more evident than in apple garden.

    Abstract:

    Based on the success of the filtration indoor experiment on some Chemosterilants,it was carried out to control the Longicorn, Anoplyophora glabripennis (Motschulsky),by spraying wettable powder,Chemosterilant CSⅡ,during the greatly period of eclosion,in order to know the effect of it in the field.The field experiment obtained clear sterile efficiency to the pest.The compensation of total sterile mortality of egg and just hatching larva was 72.08%.
