Aim: To study the prevalence of symptoms of SRBDs and their relation to problem behaviours in South Indian children. Methods: A population-based, cross-sectional survey of school children in the Kerala state of South India was conducted. The parent completed questionnaire in Malayalam language contained the 22 symptom items of the SRBD scale of the original Paediatric Sleep Questionnaire (Chervin RD et al. Sleep Med. 2000; 1[1]:21-32). Children with severe learning difficulties, known syndromes or craniofacial/neuromuscular abnormalities were excluded from the study. Results 4135 subjects (47.2% males) took part in this study. The mean (SD) age was 10.2 (3.1) years. Snoring was more common in males (12.2% vs 9.8%, p 0.33 in 9.97% children, with a male predominance (p 0.33 were significantly more likely to have parent reported EDS (odds ratio [OR]: 4.5, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.7-5.6, p Conclusions Symptoms of SRBDs are common in South Indian school children. These symptoms are associated with EDS, hyperactivity and attention deficit. Our findings emphasise the need for heightened awareness of SRBD in children among both parents and health care professionals.

Identification of growth processes involved in QTLs for tomato fruit size and composition

The aim of this study was to assess the growth processes controlled by the main QTLs for fruit size and composition. Four nearly isogenic lines (NILs) derived from an intraspecific cross between a tasty cherry tomato (Cervil) and a normal-tasting large fruit tomato (Levovil) were studied. The lines carried one (L2, L4, and L9) or five (Lx) introgressions from Cervil on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, and 9. QTLs for fruit size could be mainly associated with cell division processes in L2 and L9, whereas cell expansion was rather homogeneous among the genotypes, except Cervil for which the low expansion rate was attributed to low cell plasticity. The link between endoreduplication and fruit size remained unclear, as cell or fruit sizes were positively correlated with the cell DNA content, but not with the endoreduplication factor. QTLs for fruit composition reflected differences in water accumulation rather than in sugar accumulation, except in L9 for which the up-regulation of sucrose unloading and hexose transport and/or starch synthesis was suggested. This may explain the increased amount of carbon allocated to cell structures in L9, which could be related to a QTL for fruit texture. In Lx, these effects were attenuated, except on fruit size and cell division. Finally, the region on top of chromosome 9 may control size and composition attributes in tomato, by a combination of QTL effects on cell division, cell wall synthesis, and carbon import and metabolism.

salt and genotype impact on plant physiology and root proteome variations in tomato

After a 14 d period of salt stress in hydroponic conditions, the genotypes exhibited different responses in terms of plant growth, particularly root growth, foliar accumulation of Na(+), and foliar K/Na ratio. As a whole, Levovil appeared to be the most tolerant genotype while Cervil was the most sensitive one. Roma and Supermarmande exhibited intermediary behaviours. Among the 1300 protein spots reproducibly detected by two-dimensional electrophoresis, 90 exhibited significant abundance variations between samples and were submitted to mass spectrometry for identification. A common set of proteins (nine spots), up- or down-regulated by salt-stress whatever the genotype, was detected. But the impact of the tomato genotype on the proteome variations was much higher than the salt effect: 33 spots that were not variable with salt stress varied with the genotype. The remaining number of variable spots (48) exhibited combined effects of the genotype and the salt factors, putatively linked to the degrees of genotype tolerance. The carbon metabolism and energy-related proteins were mainly up-regulated by salt stress and exhibited most-tolerant versus most-sensitive abundance variations. Unexpectedly, some antioxidant and defence proteins were also down-regulated, while some proteins putatively involved in osmoprotectant synthesis and cell wall reinforcement were up-regulated by salt stress mainly in tolerant genotypes. The results showed the effect of 14 d stress on the tomato root proteome and underlined significant genotype differences, suggesting the importance of making use of genetic variability.

integrative approach of tomato fruit texture using multiblock analysis

Texture is a complex trait for which several QTL and genes were found. However, interactions between the molecular, histological, physical and biochemical components of fruit texture have been rarely investigated. In this work an integrative approach based on multiple co-inertia analysis (MCOA) was applied to point out links among the different levels: from protein to fruit, then to identify main physiological mechanisms involved in fruit texture. Three contrasted parental lines (‘Cervil’, ‘Levovil’, ‘VilB’) and three derived QTL-NILs harbouring texture QTL on chromosome 4 and 9 were analyzed. Measurements were performed at cell expansion stage, at red ripe stage and after 7-days postharvest storage at 20°C. To increase texture variability, water deficit was induced by decreasing water supply by 40% from flowering of the third truss. Three blocks of data (texture, physico-chemical traits and proteome datasets) were analysed. Results showed a common multi-scale structure obtained from the three datasets with a main contribution of texture and biochemical blocks. At all levels, MCOA outlined strong genotype discrimination, indicating that the genetic factor was the main factor of variability, in contrast with water deficit. The first common component separated the genetic background and correlated with firmness and sugar traits. The second component represented QTL effect. The percentage of the variance of the protein block taken into account to build the common structure was low. Proteins which mainly contributed to the common components at the three developmental stages were implicated in carbohydrate metabolism. Multiple co-inertia analysis provides an interesting tool to characterize complex trait such as fleshy fruit texture by integrating several levels of studies.
