    Abstract:

    Background: Scrub typhus is a lethal infectious disease vectored by larval trombiculid mites (i.e. Chiggers) infected with Orientia tsutsugamushi (OT) and recent decades have witnessed an emergence of scrub typhus in several countries. Identification of chigger species and their vertebrate hosts is fundamental for the assessment of human risks to scrub typhus under environmental changes, but intensive and extensive survey of Chiggers and their hosts is still lacking in Taiwan. Methods: Chiggers were collected from shrews and rodents in nine counties of Taiwan and were assayed for OT infections with nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR products were further sequenced to reveal probable OT strains. Rodents were assessed for OT exposure by immunofluorescent antibody assay. Lastly, incidence rate of scrub typhus in each county was associated with loads and prevalence of chigger infestations, seropositivity rate in rodents, and OT positivity rate in Chiggers. Results: Rattus losea was the most abundant (48.7 % of 1,285 individuals) and widespread (occurred in nine counties) small mammal species and hosted the majority of Chiggers (76.4 % of 128,520 Chiggers). Leptotrombidium deliense was the most common (64.9 % of all identified Chiggers) and widespread (occurred in seven counties) chigger species but was replaced by Leptotrombidium pallidum or Leptotrombidium scutellare during the cold seasons in two countie

    Abstract:

    Scrub typhus is a lethal human disease transmitted by larval trombiculid mites (i.e., Chiggers) that have been infected with the rickettsia Orientia tsutsugamushi. In total, 21 chigger species are known from Taiwan. We update the checklist of Chiggers of Taiwan based on an intensive survey of shrew and rodent hosts in grasslands and agricultural fields in lowland Taiwan, coupled with surveys of forests in one mountainous site and an opportunistic examination of submitted host specimens. Three new species of Chiggers, Gahrliepia (Gateria) lieni sp. n., Gahrliepia (Gateria) minuta sp. n., and Gahrliepia (Gateria) yilanensis sp. n., as well as 23 newly recorded chigger species, were discovered. Accordingly, recorded chigger species of Taiwan more than doubled from 21 to 47 species. Two new species and nine newly recorded chigger species were discovered in forests in one mountainous site in northeastern Taiwan, suggesting that many more chigger species may be uncovered, particularly in mountainous Taiwan. Further studies should also investigate O. tsutsugamushi infection in different chigger species to assess its risks to human health.

    The increase in global travel and trade has facilitated the dissemination of disease vectors. Globalization can also indirectly affect vector-borne diseases through the liberalization of cross-border trade, which has far-reaching, worldwide effects on agricultural practices and may in turn influence vectors through the modification of the ecological landscape. While the cascading effect of economic globalization on vector-borne diseases, sometimes acting synergistically with regional agricultural policy, could be substantial and have significant economic, agricultural, and public health implications, research into this remains very limited. We evaluated how abandonment of rice paddies in Taiwan after joining the World Trade Organization, along with periodic plowing, an agricultural policy to reduce farm pests in abandoned fields can unexpectedly influence risks to diseases transmitted by ticks and Chiggers (larval trombiculid mites), which we collected from their small-mammal hosts. Sampling was limited to abandoned (fallow) and plowed fields due to the challenge of trapping small mammals in flooded rice paddies. Striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius) are the main hosts for both vectors. They harbored six times more ticks and three times more Chiggers in fallow than in plowed plots. The proportion of ticks infected with Rickettsia spp. (etiologic agent of spotted fever) was three times higher in fallow plots, while that of Orientia tsutsugamushi (scrub typhus) in Chiggers was similar in both treatments. Fallow plots had more ground cover and higher vegetation than plowed ones. Moreover, ticks and Chiggers in both field types were dominated by species known to infest humans. Because ticks and Chiggers should exhibit very low survival in flooded rice paddies, we propose that farm abandonment in Taiwan, driven by globalization, may have inadvertently led to increased risks of spotted fever and scrub typhus. However, periodic plowing can unintentionally mitigate vector burdens. Economic globalization can have unexpected consequences on disease risk through modification of the agricultural landscape, but the outcome may also be influenced by agricultural policies, calling for further research on vector-borne diseases and their control from broader perspectives.

    We analyzed the spatial distribution of human cases of scrub typhus on the main island of Taiwan from 2003 to 2008 and implemented an island-wide survey of scrub typhus vectors (trombiculid Chiggers) in 2007 and 2008. The standardized incidence rate ‘SIR’ incorporating inter-district variations in population, gender and age was correlated with environmental and socioeconomic variables. Higher incidence and SIR rates were clustered in the less developed, mountainous regions of central and eastern Taiwan. Higher SIRs were also associated with a higher proportion of dry-field farmers in the population, a higher normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and lower mean annual temperature, but was not associated with rainfall. Small mammal hosts in high-SIR districts harbored more Chiggers and had higher rates of seropositivity against Orientia tsutsugamushi Hyashi, the etiologic agent of scrub typhus, compared to low-SIR districts. The concurrence of a higher proportion of dry-field farmers and higher NDVI has likely led to the clustering of scrub typhus in the mountainous regions of Taiwan. Further individual-level study of the risk factors associated with scrub typhus, and a better understanding of the effect of environmental factors on chigger abundance, should help to prevent scrub typhus in Taiwan.

    Summary 1. The role and influence of exotic species in indigenous vector-borne diseases are important but remain understudied. Ascertaining whether disease vectors prefer exotic vs. native hosts has important implications for human health. Moreover, evaluating whether exotic hosts are intrinsically less susceptible to vectors, or whether vector loads can vary with environment, is instructive for possible disease dynamics in the face of range expansion of exotic species. Rattus exulans has recently been recorded for the first time in eastern Taiwan, where scrub typhus is prevalent. We assessed the role of R. exulans as a host for Chiggers (larval trombiculid mites), and the degree to which vector loads of R. exulans exhibited spatial variation. 2. We deployed live traps in two villages in Taiwan that differed in human population density and in the incidence of scrub typhus. We recovered and tallied Chiggers from small mammals, and identified over one-fifth of Chiggers from each host to species. Chiggers were assayed for Orientia tsutsugamushi (OT) infection with nested-PCR. 3. R. exulans was the most common small mammal species captured (31AE4% total captures), and supported about one-fifth of total Chiggers recovered. Leptotrombidium imphalum dominated the chigger assemblage of most native species (>90%), but Gahrliepia spp. was commonly found in R. exulans (39AE1%). We detected OT in the genus Leptotrombidium (39%) but not in the Gahrliepia. Prevalence and loads of Chiggers in R. exulans were about 5· and 17· higher, respectively, in the less densely populated village; a similar trend also occurred with native R. losea. 4. Synthesis and applications .C urrently,R. exulans appears to play a relatively minor role in supporting Chiggers. However, the fact that both prevalence and loads of Chiggers in R. exulans vary greatly with environment, along with the abundance of most exotic species and the ecological flexibility of R. exulans, implies a potential health risk as this species expands to areas with more Chiggers. Our study suggests that a clearer understanding of interactions among native and exotic hosts and native parasite species can facilitate prediction of the impact of exotic hosts on the dynamics of vector-borne diseases.

    Abstract:

    The African continent has 452 Chiggers (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae) in 61 genera. One of these, Elianella Vercammen-Grandjean, 1956, has only two species known for Africa. The objective of the present study is to describe a new species for Equatorial Guinea, with the aim of increasing knowledge so scarce for Africa. In this study, we provide drawings, measurements and microscopy images on a Microscope Zeiss for the new species described below. Also, this type of the new species is deposited in the USNM. We describe a new species of Elianella collected parasitizing the Bioko Forest Shrew, Sylvisorex isabellae Heim de Balsac (Eulipotyphla: Soricidae) from the insular Equatorial Guinea. Also, we are providing a key for the three species of Elianella. Finally, we are contributing to the knowledge of African species, due the fact this new species is the first chigger recorded to the Equatorial Guinea, on the west coast of Central Africa.

    Abstract:

    The Caribbean country Jamaica has only seven reported chigger species. Of these, one was recorded from bats. For the specimens examined in this study were provided drawings, measurements, and microscopy images on a Microscope Zeiss. This material is deposited in the Smithsonian National Chigger Collection. In the present study, we describe a new genus and species parasitizing the Antillean ghost-faced bat in Jamaica. This new genus can be separated from all other genera of this family for the following combination of features: (1) palptarsus with four branched and three nude setae; (2) 3-pronged odontus; (3) femur I divided into basifemur and telofemur; and (4) 3 σ on genu I. The description of this new genus contributes to the increase in the knowledge of Chiggers that parasites bats in Jamaica. Also, this is only the second record of a chigger parasitizing this host in this country.

    The Piaui State, Brazil, has never had its chigger fauna recorded. In this study, we examined Chiggers collected on marsupials, rodents, and lizards from the conservation unit Parque Nacional da Serra das Confusoes (PNSC). Herein we describe four new species, Paraguacarus klompenin. sp., Neoschoengastia ochoain. sp., Quadraseta welbournin. sp., and Susa bauchanin. sp. Furthermore, an additional seven species are reported: Eutrombicula alfreddugesi (Oudemans, 1910), Microtrombicula brachytrichiaBrennan, 1971, Microtrombicula rhipidomysiGoff, Whitaker and Dietz, 1983, Parascoschoengastia aemulata (Brennan and Jones, 1964), Parasecia validaBrennan, 1969, Pseudochoengastia petrolinensis Jacinavicius, Bassini-Silva and Barros-Battesti 2019, and Quadraseta flochi (Brennan and Jones, 1960). This is the first report of Chiggers in Piaui State, which includes one of the most biodiverse areas in the Caatinga biome and is of particular importance to conservation. The genera Paraguacarus Goff and Whitaker, 1984 and Susa Audy and Nadcharam, 1960 are reported here for the first time to Brazil.

    Abstract:

    Chiggers have been studied throughout the world for their role in disease transmission. Venezuela has the largest chigger diversity in South America. In a review of Venezuelan genera, two monotypic genera described from Robinson's Mouse Opossum collected in Falcon State and after examination of the types of both genera, it was found that Delmohius hardyi Brennan and Goff and Carebareia johnstoni Goff and Brennan are the same species. Therefore, we are proposing the synonymy of Delmohius with Carebareia.

    Abstract:

    The Piaui State, Brazil, has never had its chigger fauna recorded. In this study, we examined Chiggers collected on marsupials, rodents, and lizards from the conservation unit Parque Nacional da Serra das Confusoes (PNSC). Herein we describe four new species, Paraguacarus klompenin. sp., Neoschoengastia ochoain. sp., Quadraseta welbournin. sp., and Susa bauchanin. sp. Furthermore, an additional seven species are reported: Eutrombicula alfreddugesi (Oudemans, 1910), Microtrombicula brachytrichiaBrennan, 1971, Microtrombicula rhipidomysiGoff, Whitaker and Dietz, 1983, Parascoschoengastia aemulata (Brennan and Jones, 1964), Parasecia validaBrennan, 1969, Pseudochoengastia petrolinensis Jacinavicius, Bassini-Silva and Barros-Battesti 2019, and Quadraseta flochi (Brennan and Jones, 1960). This is the first report of Chiggers in Piaui State, which includes one of the most biodiverse areas in the Caatinga biome and is of particular importance to conservation. The genera Paraguacarus Goff and Whitaker, 1984 and Susa Audy and Nadcharam, 1960 are reported here for the first time to Brazil.

    Abstract:

    Chiggers have been studied throughout the world for their role in disease transmission. Venezuela has the largest chigger diversity in South America. In a review of Venezuelan genera, two monotypic genera described from Robinson's Mouse Opossum collected in Falcon State and after examination of the types of both genera, it was found that Delmohius hardyi Brennan and Goff and Carebareia johnstoni Goff and Brennan are the same species. Therefore, we are proposing the synonymy of Delmohius with Carebareia.

    ENGLISHStudy of index diversity of ectoparasite species in the body of rat R. tanezumi and Polynesian rat R. exulans was conducted on the slopes of Mt. Merapi, Sukabumi village, Cepogo Sub District, Boyolali District, Central Java from May up to December 2008. The purpose of this study was to accounter index diversity of ectoparasite species in roof rat R. tanezumi and Polynesia rat R. exulans. This study was descriptive research. The method of study was by wire trap and ectoparasite processing by combing the hair. Five main groups of ectoparasites were found on the bodies of roof rat R. tanezumi and Polynesian rat R. exulans i.e mites, Chiggers, ticks, lice and fleas. It had been found 10 species of ectoparasites on the body of R. tanezumi. It was 2 species of fleas, Xenopsylla cheopis and Stivalius cognatus, 2 species of lice Polyplax spinulosa and Hoplopleura pasifica, 5 species of Chiggers Leptotrombidium deliensis, L. lacunosa,and Gahrliepia disparunguis, 2 species of mites larvae Laelap echidninus and L. nuttalli and 1 species of tick Ixodes sp., whereas in the bodies of polynesian rat R. exulans were found all of species ectoparasites, exceptly chigger L. lacunosa and ticks Ixodes sp. Species of Chiggers L. fletcheri and Celadonta were found too in the bodies of Polynesian rats R. exulans. Tujuan penelitian adalah mengetahui indeks keragaman ektoparasit pada tikus rumah Rattus tanezumi dan tikus polinesia R. exulans. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah survei rodent dengan perangkap kawat, serta pemrosesan ektoparasit dengan penyisiran. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lima kelompok ektoparasit telah ditemukan pada tubuh tikus rumah R. tanezumi dan tikus polinesia R. exulans.. Di tubuh tikus rumah R. tanezumi telah ditemukan 10 jenis ektoparasit yaitu 2 jenis kelompok pinjal, Xenopsylla cheopis dan Stivalius cognatus, 2 jenis kelompok kutu Polyplax spinulosa dan Hoplopleura Pasifica, 5 jenis kelompok larva tungau Leptotrombidium deliensis, L. lacunosa, dan Gahrliepia disparunguis, 2 jenis kelompok tungau Laelap echidninus dan L. nuttalli dan 1 jenis kelompok caplak Ixodes sp.,sedangkan pada tubuh tikus polynesia R. exulans telah ditemukan semua dari jenis ectoparasit tersebut di atas L. lacunose. Jenis larva tungau L. fletcheri dan Celadonta telah ditemukan di tubuh tikus polinesia R. exulans.
