The first study evaluated a barrier teat dip product containing Chlorous Acid-chlorine dioxide as the germicidal agent, and the second study evaluated a sodium chlorite product with a barrier component as well as a sodium chlorite product without a barrier component. The Chlorous Acid-chlorine dioxide teat dip reduced new intramammary infections (IMI) caused by Staph. aureus by 91.5% and reduced new IMI caused by Strep. agalactiae by 71.7%. The barrier dip containing sodium chlorite reduced new IMI caused by Staph. aureus and Strep. agalactiae by 41.0 and 0%, respectively. The nonbarrier dip containing sodium chlorite reduced new IMI caused by Staph. aureus by 65.6% and reduced new IMI caused by Strep. agalactiae by 39.1%. Teat skin and teat end conditions were evaluated before and after the second study; no deleterious effects among dipped quarters compared with control quarters were noted for the two sodium chlorite products.

Both dips contained Chlorous Acid as the primary germicidal agent and lactic Acid or mandelic Acid as the Chlorous Acid activator. The dip activated with mandelic Acid significantly reduced new IMI by Staph. aureus and Strep. agalactiae . The IMI rate was reduced 68.7% for Staph. aureus and 56.4% for Strep. agalactiae . The dip activated with lactic Acid significantly reduced new Staph. aureus IMI by 69.3% but did not significantly reduce new Strep. agalactiae IMI (35.2% reduction) through the full 11-wk study period. Teat skin condition did not change from pretrial status after using either teat dip during the study.

Journal of Dairy Science, 1993Co-Authors: S P Oliver, M J Lewis, T L Ingle, B E Gillespie, Karl R MatthewsAbstract:The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a premilking teat disinfectant for the prevention of mastitis in dairy cows under natural exposure conditions. Predipping was compared with a negative control using a split udder experimental design. All teats were dipped after milking with the same teat dip. Percentage of quarters newly infected by major mastitis pathogens was 34% lower in quarters with teats predipped and postdipped than in quarters with teats postdipped only. New IMI by Streptococcus uberis and Staphylococcus aureus were significantly lower in quarters with teats predipped and postdipped than in quarters with teats postdipped only. Differences in incidence of clinical mastitis between treatment groups approached significance. Predipping and postdipping were no more effective against Gram-negative bacteria, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species, and Corynebacterium bovis than postdipping only. No chapping or irritation of teats was observed, and no adverse effects were noted using the test product as a premilking and postmilking teat disinfectant. Results of this study suggest that predipping and then postdipping with the test product was a more effective procedure against major mastitis pathogens than postdipping only.

Also the effect of a preceding A-stage was examined. Kappa number, delignification, and hexenuronic Acid removal were unaffected by the used dilution media and temperature. Increasing ClO2 charge resulted in a lower kappa number, increased hexenuronic Acid removal, and more efficient delignification. With a preceding A-stage the kappa number was lower throughout the D0-stage, but the kappa number reduction and the removal of hexenuronic Acid were slightly decreased. Chlorine dioxide consumption was practically independent of the tested variables; only dosage had an effect. The formation of chlorate and chloride was increased with higher dosages of ClO2, but the stoichiometry remained unchanged. This study investigated the oxidation kinetics of different aldehydes by Chlorous Acid. Reaction rates with Chlorous Acid at 25 °C were obtained for formaldehyde (11.0 M−1 s−1), vanillin (0.59 M−1 s−1), veratraldehyde (1.00 M−1 s−1), benzaldehyde (5.6 M−1 s−1), glucose (3.39 × 10−3 M−1 s−1), glycolaldehyde (39.0 M−1 s−1), and 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic Acid (5.2 M−1 s−1). The activation energies varied between 26 and 63 kJ/mol. The rate-determining step was shown to be the addition of Chlorous Acid to the aldehyde structure. The practical significance of the Cl(III) reaction with aldehyde structures in chlorine dioxide bleaching was discussed. It was concluded that various aldehydes present in cellulosic pulp are at least partly responsible for the consumption of Cl(III) in chlorine dioxide bleaching.
