    Abstract:

    We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence and species of gastro-intestinal helminths and haemoparasites in 100 chickens kept under extensive management systems in Ghana, West Africa. All the examined chickens (100%) were infected with gastro-intestinal helminths; a total of 18 species were detected. The species and their prevalences were: Acuaria hamulosa (25%), Allodapa suctoria (20%), Ascaridia galli (24%), Capillaria spp. (60%), Choanotaenia infundibulum (13%), Gongylonema ingluvicola (62%), Heterakis gallinarum (31%), H. isolonche (16%), Hymenolepis spp. (66%), Raillietina cesticillus (12%), R. echinobothrida (81%), R. tetragona (59%), Strongyloides avium (2%), Subulura strongylina (10%), Tetrameres fissispina (58%), Trichostronygylus tenuis (2%), and finally one unidentified acanthocephalan (1%) and one unidentified trematode (1%). Thirty-five per cent of the chickens were infected with the haemoparasites Aegyptinella pullorum and Plasmodium juxtanucleare (prevalences 9% and 27%, respectively). Association between chicken sex and prevalences was not significant. An over-dispersed distribution was seen for most of the helminth species.

    Choanotaenia atopa (Cestoda: Dilepididae) is described (host: domestic cat from the vicinity of Manhattan, Kansas); its natural host is presumed to be a rodent. Choanotaenia atopa is morphologically similar to cestodes of 6 species, all from rodents, formerly placed in the genus Rodentotaenia Matevosian, 1953, and subsequently removed to the genera Choanotaenia Railliet, 1986, or Monopylidium Fuhrmann, 1899. The systematic position of those cestodes is discussed; Monopylidium and Rodentotaenia are treated as synonyms of Choanotaenia. Choanotaenia atopa is distinguished by size and form of rostellar hooks, regularly alternating genital pores, and other characters in genital organs.

    The present communication deals with a new species of the genus Choanotaenia, Railliet, (1896) from the intestine of Venellus indicus at Kinwat, Disrict Nanded. (M.S.), India. The new species Choanotaenia intestinalis Sp. Nov. is characterized by having scolex medium, globular to oval in shape, suckers four, oval to rounded, overlapping each other, rostellum armed having 10–12 hooks in a single circle, neck short, mature segment longer than broad, somewhat squarish in shape, testes oval to rounded, 14 in numbers, mostly post-ovarian, cirrus pouch elongated, placed 1/3 rd from anterior margin of the segment, cirrus small, tube like, within the cirrus pouch, genital pore marginal, unilateral, vagina posterior to cirrus pouch, ovary dumbel shaped, gravid segment broader than long, egg capsules 50–60 in numbers, having single egg in each egg capsule.
