    Abstract:

    Field surveys of the exotic leafminers, Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) and L. sativae Blanchard, as well as their associated parasitoids, were undertaken in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan in 2009. The surveys, conducted one and two decades after the initial invasions of these species in the area, respectively, revealed that only L. trifolii emerged from all nine leaf samples, suggesting that L. trifolii populations have revived after the marked declines that followed the outbreaks of this pest in the early 1990s. Of the 15 parasitoid species collected during the survey, five species, Dacnusa sasakawai Takada, Diglyphus isaea (Walker), Chrysocharis pentheus (Walker), NeoChrysocharis formosa (Westwood) and NeoChrysocharis sp., were relatively abundant, and four species were new parasitoid records for Liriomyza in the prefecture. Based on these findings, the relationship between local parasitoids and exotic leafminers is discussed

    Abstract:

    In order to examine the relative abundance of indigenous parasitoids against three leafminer species, Liriomyza trifolii, L. sativae and Chromatomyia horticola, kidney bean plants infested with larvae of each species were exposed in vegetable gardens or grassland to different seasonal conditions (spring, summer and fall). Abundant parasitoid species were Chrysocharis pentheus, Diglyphus isaea and D. minoeus in spring or fall, and NeoChrysocharis formosa, D. albiscapus and D. pusztensis in summer. Also, abundant parasitoid species varied among the different field conditions; however, within the same season and field the dominant parasitoid species were similar in all three leafminer species tested. Our findings indicate that the dominant parasitoid species did not exhibit any strong preference in the field between the three host species, namely L. trifolii, L. sativae or C. horticola.

    The seasonal abundance of hymenopteran parasitoids reared from the agromyzid leafminer Chromatomyia horticola was monitored on garden pea in Shizuoka, central Japan, for 17 months between 2004 and 2005. The leafminer was abundant during the cool seasons (December to May) but parasitoid populations generally lagged behind the leafminer by approximately two months. Twenty-one parasitoid species were reared from C. horticola, and the most abundant parasitoid species were Diglyphus isaea, D. minoeus and Chrysocharis pentheus, comprising ca. 90% of the total number caught. Diglyphus isaea and D. minoeus were abundant during the cool season (December to May), while C. pentheus was abundant in the warm season (May to June). Other common parasitoid species were Dacnusa nipponica, NeoChrysocharis formosa and Halticoptera circulus. The effects of two insecticides, malathion and tralomethrin, on parasitoid populations were investigated both in the cool and warm seasons. The insecticides caused a reduction in the density of most parasitoid species for at least one month and resulted in resurgence of the leafminer. However, the density of H. circulus increased after insecticide applications, suggesting that this parasitoid was tolerant to both insecticides but H. circulus could not reduce C. horticola populations when insecticide applications were made to the crop. These studies provide insight into the development of integrated control strategies of leafminer pests in field and glasshouse crops.

    Abstract:

    The leafminers Liriomyza trifolii and L. sativae are exotic crop pests in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, and were first recorded in 1990 and 2001, respectively. From surveys conducted in the Prefecture between 1992 and 1994, seven parasitoid species were reared from L. trifolii, of which NeoChrysocharis formosa and Chrysocharis pentheus were the most abundant. Surveys in 2004 and 2006 recorded 12 parasitoid species from L. sativae, and the most abundant parasitoids were once again N. formosa and C. pentheus. In both surveys, high female ratios were found in populations of N. formosa, suggesting that this species is parthenogenetic. Our surveys indicate that N. formosa and C. pentheus are the dominant parasitoid species of exotic invasive Liriomyza spp. and may play a key role in regulating their populations.

    マメハモグリバエの生物的防除法を開発する一環として静岡県における寄生バチの発生実態を調査し,あわせて各種殺虫剤の散布が寄生バチに与える影響を圃場試験で検討した。1) マメハモグリバエの寄生バチは各地の露地および施設栽培圃場から採集されたが,殺虫剤の散布後まもない圃場からはほとんど採集されなかった。2) マメハモグリバエの寄生バチとして,コマユバチ科で3種,コバチ上科で13種(ヒメコバチ科9種;コガネコバチ科2種;ツヤヤドリタマバチ科1種;ツヤコバチ科1種)の合計16種が確認された。3) ヒメコバチ科に属するHemiptarsenus varicornis, Chrysocharis pentheus, NeoChrysocharis okazakiiおよびN. formosaの4種は各地から広く採集され,これら寄生バチが優占種となっている圃場も多かった。施設栽培ではH. varicornisが年間を通して採集され,最も重要な寄生バチとなっていた。4) 非選択的殺虫剤(permethrin, ethofenprox, methomyl, prothiofos)を散布すると寄生バチの寄生率は著しく低下し,その後マメハモグリバエが多発した。一方,選択的殺虫剤(fenpyroximate, dicofol, fenbutatin oxide, pyridaben, buprofezin, flufenoxurone)を散布した場合は寄生バチの寄生率が低下せず,その後マメハモグリバエは減少傾向を示した。

    Abstract:

    A new combined molecular and morphological phylogeny of the Eulophidae is presented with special reference to the subfamily Entedoninae. We examined 28S D2–D5 and CO1 gene regions with parsimony and partitioned Bayesian analyses, and examined the impact of a small set of historically recognized morphological characters on combined analyses. Eulophidae was strongly supported as monophyletic only after exclusion of the enigmatic genus Trisecodes. The subfamilies Eulophinae, Entiinae (=Euderinae) and Tetrastichinae were consistently supported as monophyletic, but Entedoninae was monophyletic only in combined analyses. Six contiguous bases in the 3e′ subregion of the 28S D2 rDNA contributed to placement of nominal subgenus of Closterocerus outside Entedoninae. In all cases, Euderomphalini was excluded from Entiinae, and we suggest that it be retained in Entedoninae. Opheliminae n. stat. is raised from tribe to subfamily status. Trisecodes is removed from Entedoninae but retained as incertae sedis in Eulophidae until its family placement can be determined new placement. The genera NeoChrysocharisstat. rev. and Asecodesstat. rev. are removed from synonymy with Closterocerus because strong molecular differences corroborate their morphological differences. Closterocerus (AChrysocharis) germanicus is transferred to the genus Chrysonotomyian. comb. based on molecular and morphological characters.

    We examined the sensitive stage to summer diapause induction of Chrysocharis pubicornis. Individuals of different ages were transferred from diapause-preventing (15°C–12L : 12D) to diapause-inducing conditions (25°C–16L : 8D) throughout the 22-day egg-larval period. Transferring 15-day-old (third instar larvae about to complete feeding) or younger individuals resulted in more than 60% diapause; however, less than 25% of larvae entered diapause when transferred at 18 days (full-grown, resting third instar) or older. This suggests that sensitivity is high in younger instars, but decreases in the last instar. Moreover, individuals transferred at 18 days emerged 15 days earlier than control individuals continuously reared at 15°C–12L : 12D. We also examined the effects of cooling treatment duration on diapause termination by exposing diapausing larvae to 15°C–12L : 12D for increasing periods, followed by transfer to 25°C–16L : 8D. The percentage of diapause termination and the time to adult emergence increased with the cooling period, and it took between 12 and 16 days for 50% of individuals to complete diapause. The diapause termination rate after 20-day cooling was similar to that under continuous cooling (<90%), but the time to emergence was significantly shortened by 15 days. The implications of our findings in an eventual biocontrol program are discussed.

The lower developmental threshold was 7.4 and 7.2°C, and the thermal constant was 297.4 and 307.5 degree-days for males and females, respectively. The effects of combinations of different temperatures and photoperiods on larval diapause induction and termination were also examined. Larval development showed a short-day type response affected by temperature. The percentage of individuals entering diapause increased with the temperature and photoperiod. The critical photoperiod for diapause induction was between 12 and 14 h at 25°C, whereas at 15 h and 20°C the diapause rate did not reach 50% within the photoperiod range tested. Regardless of the photoperiod, diapause terminated at 15°C but was maintained at 25°C. At 20°C, 90% of individuals terminated diapause at 12 h photoperiod but only 16% at 16 h photoperiod. A significant effect of the photoperiod on the post-diapause emergence pattern of wasps was observed at 15°C. From these results, it is considered that summer diapause enables C. pubicornis to synchronize its occurrence with that of the garden pea leafminer, Chromatomyia horticola.
