  • characteristics of hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes in precipitation and the environmental controls in tropical monsoon Climatic Zone
International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, 2019
    Co-Authors: Yuchuan Meng, Yue Hu
    Abstract:

Abstract The characteristics of hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes and their environmental controls were investigated in five regions which were influenced by tropical monsoon climate from January 2015 to December 2016. The result showed that the local meteoric water line (LMWL) for each region deviated from the global meteorological water line (GMWL) in varying degrees and difference existed between wet and dry seasons. The isotopic composition and d-excess on temporal and spatial scales varied considerably among stations, showing the difference of the controlling air masses and the distance of water transport. Generally, the heavy isotopes depleted along the direction of monsoon flow. The influences of temperature and precipitation amount were studied by monadic regression analysis and bivariate regression analysis, the coefficients for both meteorological parameters were calculated. The “precipitation amount effect” was obvious in the whole area, while both positive and negative correlations were observed between temperature and isotopes, which showed the synergy of temperature and precipitation to stable isotopes.

  • precipitation stable isotope variability in tropical monsoon Climatic Zone of asia
IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, 2018
    Co-Authors: Yue Hu, Yuchuan Meng
    Abstract:

The temporal and spatial variability of precipitation stable isotopes in tropical Climatic Zone of Asia are analyzed based on the data provided by GNIP during the study period, which is from January 2015 to December 2016. Results indicate that the monsoon activities are the major parameters that control the characteristics of precipitation stable isotopes on both temporal and spatial scale. On the annual scale, the extreme values, average values and the variation ranges of δ18O and d-excess vary considerably among stations, showing differences of the controlling air masses. The monthly variation of δ18O and d-excess have significant regularities, which are strongly correlated to the distance of water transport and the location of moisture sources respectively. The spatial distribution of stable isotopes in months of different seasons is generally consistent with the tropical monsoon circulation during the four seasons, as values decrease along the path of monsoon flow in summer and winter, and show features of transition periods in spring and autumn as a result of barometric movement. It can serve as a useful tool to contribute valuable information for the research of regional monsoon and water circulation.

  • a passive design solution to enhance thermal comfort in an educational building in the warm humid Climatic Zone of madurai
    Journal of building engineering, 2018
    Co-Authors: S Subhashini, K Thirumaran
    Abstract:

Abstract Thermal comfort levels in the classrooms of a naturally ventilated (NV) educational building in Madurai have been evaluated by qualitative and quantitative analysis and the thermal discomfort Zones have been identified. Considering shading of building envelope as one of the best passive cooling techniques, this study has explored the possibility of designing a shading device using solar charts and shadow angle protractor for the classrooms in the case study building, to reduce the heat gain from the windows and external walls. Hand tools and manual presentation techniques in architectural design are always preferred to the complicated, skilled based computer drawings for low height buildings. Now-a-days there are lots of simulation tools for designing buildings, but they are dependent on the weather files in a particular format for that region, which makes it a challenge to arrive at proper solutions for all regions. Hence, this paper is focused to give an insight to budding architects and engineers to use simple methods to design low energy buildings in a better way for any particular region using the local Climatic data alone.

  • Energy monitoring and conservation potential in school buildings in the C′ Climatic Zone of Greece
    Renewable Energy, 2009
    Co-Authors: A Dimoudi, P. Kostarela
    Abstract:

Energy efficiency is very important in school buildings as it is associated with comfort and air quality conditions in their interior and energy costs of these buildings are associated with their main operational costs. Moreover, school buildings differ from other types of buildings because they are the places where children are educated and have the opportunity to learn how to become environmentally-aware citizens. There is an increasing awareness throughout Europe for promotion of sustainable solutions in school buildings involving energy efficient technologies and measures. The aim of this article is to assess the energy performance, based on monitored data, of school buildings in the C′ Climatic Zone of Greece, a region with the lowest air temperature during winter period. It also demonstrates, through simulation studies, the potential for energy conservation of school buildings in this region. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
