  • A sustainable energy-aware resource management strategy for IoT Cloud Federation
2015 IEEE International Symposium on Systems Engineering (ISSE), 2015

    Abstract:

The advent of both Cloud computing and Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the way to conceive distributed systems. Nowadays, we can talk about IoT Cloud to indicate a new type of distributed system consisting of a set of smart IoT devices or sensors interconnected with a remote Cloud infrastructure, platform, or software. Energy sustainability in IoT Cloud providers offers new tempting business opportunities for organizations, but at the same time it raises new challenges. In this paper, a flexible IoT Cloud Federation energy management strategy is presented for optimizing the allocation of geographically localized smart sensors. We define the concept of IoT Cloud Federation as a mesh of IoT Cloud providers that are interconnected to provide a universal decentralized sensing and actuating environment where everything is driven by constraints and agreements in a ubiquitous infrastructure. In particular, a dynamic algorithm able to improve energy sustainability in a federated IoT Cloud ecosystem is discussed. In addition, we analyze a use-case driven strategy that allows both IoT Cloud providers and brokers to determine the paths to reach possible destination IoT devices in which computational resources should be dynamically migrated in order to push down the energy consumption due to IoT distributed applications.

  • advance resource reservation and qos based refunding in Cloud Federation
    Global Communications Conference, 2014
    Co-Authors: Mohammad Aazam, Euinam Huh
    Abstract:

With rapidly increasing digital media, importance of Cloud computing is also scaling up. Cloud computing not only provides ubiquitous access, but also, ease of management for hugely increasing data. The next era is going to be of Cloud Federation, in which services would be brought up to the user through multiple Clouds, creating an inter-Cloud computing environment. One of the key entities in inter-Cloud computing is Cloud broker. Cloud broker plays an important role in Cloud Federation environment. Broker has to reserve resources and perform pricing and billing. At times, promised quality cannot be delivered. When a customer gives up the service without completely consuming it, service provider has to consider quality degradation factor, while refunding the remaining amount. We have proposed a model which addresses the issue of advanced resource allocation and quality of service (QoS) based refund. We have implemented and tested our model on CloudSim 3.0.3 toolkit. The results presented here justify and endorse our model.

  • game based distributed resource allocation in horizontal dynamic Cloud Federation platform
International Conference on Algorithms and Architectures for Parallel Processing, 2011
Co-Authors: Mohammad Mehedi Hassan, Biao Song, Euinam Huh
    Abstract:

In this paper, we propose a game-theoretic solution to the problem of distributed resource allocation in emerging horizontal dynamic Cloud Federation (HDCF) platform. It differs from the existing vertical supply chain Federation (VSCF) models in terms of establishing Federation and dynamic pricing. We study two resource allocation games - non cooperative and cooperative games to analyze interaction among CPs in a HDCF environment. We use price-based resource allocation strategies and present both centralized and distributed algorithms to find optimal solutions which have low overhead and robust performance. Various simulations were carried out to validate and verify the effectiveness of the proposed resource allocation games. The simulation results demonstrate that a cost effective resource allocation with robust performance is achieved in the cooperative scheme.

  • Distributed Resource Allocation Games in Horizontal Dynamic Cloud Federation Platform
2011 IEEE International Conference on High Performance Computing and Communications, 2011
Co-Authors: Mohammad Mehedi Hassa, Iao Song, Euinam Huh
    Abstract:

Distributed resource allocation is a very important and complex problem in emerging horizontal dynamic Cloud Federation (HDCF) platform. The HDCF platform differs from the existing vertical supply chain Federation (VSCF) models in terms of establishing Federation and dynamic pricing. There is a need to develop algorithms that can capture this complexity yet can be easily implemented and used to solve distributed resource allocation problem in HDCF platform. In this paper, we propose a game-theoretic solution to this problem that ensures mutual benefits so that the Cloud providers (CPs) are encouraged to form a HDCF platform. We study two resource allocation games - cooperative and non-cooperative games to analyze interaction among CPs in a HDCF environment. Also both centralized and distributed algorithms are presented to find optimal solutions which have low overhead and robust performance. Various simulations were carried out to validate and verify the effectiveness of the proposed resource allocation games.

  • FiCloud - Modelling Cloud Federation: A Fair Profit Distribution Strategy Using the Shapley Value
2018 IEEE 6th International Conference on Future Internet of Things and Cloud (FiCloud), 2018
Co-Authors: Antoine Bagula, Hope Mauwa, Antonio Celesti
    Abstract:

Cloud computing provides software (Software as a Service), platform (Platform as a Service) and infrastructure (Infrastructure as a Service) services to its users by integrating IT resources into a large-scale and scalable resource pool through the virtualisation technology. However, the single Cloud resource provider model currently implemented by many providers may fail short to meet the dynamic nature of Cloud users' requirements. Cloud Federation can mitigate this issue by optimising Cloud resource allocation through sharing and re-usability of available resources. This paper revisit the problem of Cloud engineering by tackling the key issue of the fair distribution of profit between Cloud resource providers, which, to the best of our knowledge, has only been scarcely addressed by the research and practitioners' community. We propose a method that enables the Cloud Federation to map the contribution of resources of the participants to the Federations into a quality of service metric used to achieve a Cloud Federation. Building upon a Federation game implementation, we reveal the possibilities and benefits of different Federation compositions using the Shapley value of each resource provider as a way of implementing a fair profit sharing strategy. Using extensions of the CloudSim package, we present simulation results that demonstrate the fairness of our proposed method and strategy.

  • Evaluating a Cloud Federation ecosystem to reduce carbon footprint by moving computational resources
2015 IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communication (ISCC), 2015
Co-Authors: Maurizio Giacobbe, Antonio Celesti, Massimo Villari, Maria Fazio, Antonio Puliafito
    Abstract:

Cloud Federation is an emerging topic towards new dynamic scenarios in smart ecosystems, where new more flexible energy management strategies are needed than the traditional, in order to optimize mobility and energy efficiency. In this paper we focus both on Cloud Federation and energy efficiency to enforce a dynamic energy management strategy for the whole ecosystem, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. More specifically, starting from our two-step approach, we evaluate a Cloud Federation ecosystem by moving computational resources among federated Cloud DCs in order to maintain, for a forecast period, the related workload at the best Green Destination (GD) powered by renewable energy sources. To this end we present and discuss two simulated scenarios, and their experimental results, thus to proving the goodness of our approach. Moreover, an energy comparison between the transfer and the maintenance phases for the computational workload is made.

  • an approach to reduce energy costs through virtual machine migrations in Cloud Federation
International Symposium on Computers and Communications, 2015
Co-Authors: Maurizio Giacobbe, Antonio Celesti, Massimo Villari, Maria Fazio, Antonio Puliafito
    Abstract:

Cloud Federation offers new business models to enforce more flexible energy management strategies. Independent Cloud providers are exclusively bounded to the specific energy supplier powering its Data Centers. The situation radically change if we consider a Federation of cooperating Cloud providers. In such a context a proper migration of virtual machines among providers can lead to a global energy cost-saving strategy. In this paper, we present an approach to reduce energy cost in a federated Cloud ecosystem. More specifically, we propose an algorithm that allows providers to determine a map of possible destinations for cost-evaluation. Furthermore, we introduce an additional algorithm to determine the optimum energy cost migration path, and, consequently, the best Cloud Data Center where virtual machines should be migrated in order to push down energy costs.
