BSSM based diets also caused significant reduction in PCV, RBC, WBC, Hb as well as MCV, MCH and MCHC similar to the results obtained on WBC differential counts of neutrophils and lymphocytes in comparison with the conventional diet (p < 0.05). Histopathological examinations on the liver samples revealed that the control diet presented livers that were normal in tissue morphology without inflammation or haemorrhage while the photomicrographs of the liver samples of Cockerels fed treated dietary BSSM at 17.50% inclusion showed morphological patterns indicating severe distortion suggesting evidence of haemorrhage and inflammation with numerous blood cells occupying the available hepatic sinuses. The poor results recorded on the biochemical, haematological and morphological parameters were reflected in performance characteristics as reduced feed intake, weight gain, growth rate, feed efficiency and high mortality were obtained on diets containing BSSM compared with the orthodox diet (p < 0.05). Findings of this experiment indicated that for optimum results, processed BSSM be included in diets below the 17.50% level considered high for the birds in this study.

Adult White Leghorn Cockerels (25 weeks of age) and adult Japanese quails (15 weeks of age) were used to determine the apparent digestibilities of amino acids in cereal grains. 3. The digestibilities of amino acids in sorghum determined with quails were similar to Cockerels, with the exception of histidine, which was significantly lower in quails. 4. In finger millet, the digestibilities of methionine and leucine were significantly higher, while that of histidine and cystine were significantly lower in adult quails than in adult Cockerels. 5. The digestibilities of pearl millet amino acids were similar in quails and Cockerels, except for that of histidine, which was significantly lower in quails. 6. Almost all the amino acids in maize, except histidine, had significantly higher digestibility values in quails than in Cockerels. Histidine digestibility of all the 4 cereal grains was significantly lower in quails than in Cockerels. 7. The amino acid digestibility values for certain cereal grains determined with Cockerels do not support their use in formulating practical quail diets. The amino acid digestibility values of maize were underestimated by using Cockerels while that of finger millet was overestimated.

Protein digestibility and energy metabolizability of finger millet and pearl millet grains in Cockerels and Japanese quails

Pearl millet was fed to Cockerels as per Farrell's “Rapid ME method” after 48 h fasting. Finger millet was force fed (50g) to Cockerels as per “Sibbald method”. Both the test ingredients were offered to quails as per “Farrell's method”. No significant difference was observed in nitrogen corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn) and nitrogen corrected true metabolizable energy (TMEn) values of pearl millet. In comparison to Cockerels, Japanese quails recorded significantly lower (P< 0.01) AMEn and TMEn values in both the cereal grains. The true protein digestibility of pearl millet in Japanese quails was significantly higher (P< 0.05) than the Cockerels (95.97 vs 88.82%). In contrast, the apparent protein digestibility of finger millet in Japanese quails was markedly lower (P< 0.01) than the Cockerels (64.35 vs 73.6%). The present observations indicated that the nutrients of pearl millet and finger millet grains were better utilized by Cockerels as compared to Japanese quails. Overall, the results revealed that the metabolizable energy and protein digestibility values of millet grains determined using Cockerels might not be suitable for application in practical quail diet formulation.

Neem (Azadirachta indica) Seed Cake in the Diets of Cockerel Chickens

OlayeniAbstract:Abstract: The response of cockerel chickens fed graded levels of untreated and treated neem seed cake as partial replacement of Soya Bean Meal (SBM) was investigated. A total of 180 Cockerels were subjected to an 8 week feeding trial in a 3x2 factorial design. There were 6 dietary treatments: diets 1 and 2 contained Untreated Neem Seed Cake (UNSC) at 10 and 20%, diets 3 and 4 contained Water Soaked Neem Seed Cake (WNSC) at 10 and 20 % levels while diets 5 and 6 contained Charcoal supplemented Neem Seed Cake (CNSC) at 10 and 20 % each replacing soyabean meal. The charcoal in diets 5 and 6 was added at a dose of 4 kg/tonne of feed. Results obtained showed that Feed Intake (FI), Body Weight Gain (BWG) and Feed Cost per kilogram Weight Gain (FCWG) were significantly different (p<0.05) across the treatments while feed gain ratio and feed cost did not show any difference among treatment means. Cockerels on WNSC diets had higher FI and BWG while those on UNSC had the least values. FCWG was similar in WNSC and CNSC and was better (p<0.05) than UNSC. Cockerels fed UNSC based diets produced least result in nearly all the carcass indices measured. Bigger breast plate, thigh, drumstick and back parts (p<0.05) were observed for birds on WNSC diets up to 20 % level of inclusion. Blood parameters did not show any significant differences (p>0.05) among dietary treatments. It is concluded that treated neem seedcake may replace part of SBM used in the diet of cockerel chickens at the levels studied. Apparent and True Digestibility of Amino Acids of Meat Cum Bone Meal and Fish Meal in Caecectomized Roosters

SharmaAbstract:The apparent and true amino acid digestibilities of silver fish meal and meat cum bone meal were determined using adult caecectomized roosters. Each test ingredient was offered to six caecectomized and six intact Cockerels individually. The apparent digestibilities of indispensable amino acids of fish meal, with the exception of methionine and threonine were significantly higher in caecectomized than in intact birds. Whereas the apparent digestibilities of methionine, cystine, threonine, valine and serine of meat cum bone meal were higher in intact birds in comparison to their caecectomized counterparts. The true digestibilities of all the amino acids of fish meal were similar between caecectomized and intact birds. In contrary, except arginine and phenylalanine, all the essential amino acids of meat cum bone meal had higher digestibility in intact as compared to caecectomized Cockerels. The intact Cockerels underestimated the apparent amino acid digestibilities of fish meal, while overestimated that of meat cum bone meal. When true amino acid digestibility was taken into account, no significant difference was observed for fish meal between caecectomized and intact Cockerels. On the other hand, the intact Cockerels overestimated the digestibility of meat cum bone meal. These results suggested that the amino acid digestibility values of meat cum bone meal and fish meal determined using caecectomized Cockerels might be appropriate and reliable for poultry diet formulations based on apparent digestible values. It also suggests that when the poultry diets are formulated on the basis of true digestibility values, the digestibility data of meat cum bone meal generated from caecectomized birds and that of fish meal generated either from caecectomized or intact Cockerels can be effectively applied.
