    To study the response of cabbage butterfly, Pieris brassicae on cabbage, cauliflower, yellow sarson, gobhi sarson and Indian mustard, various life tables i.e., age specific and stage specific life tables have been constructed in controlled conditions (25±1°C, 65±5% R.H. and 12 h L:12 h D). The age specific life-table revealed that P. brassicae required maximum period of 42 days on Indian mustard and minimum 36 days on cabbage to complete the generation. The survivorship decreased gradually from an initial stage of development till culmination of the generation on each host plant. However, mortality showed a significant variation at different development stages of P. brassicae on each host plant. The apparent mortality and mortality survival ratio was found highest at pupal stage (15.91 and 0.19%) on Indian mustard and lowest at pre-pupal stage (3.39 and 0.04%) on cabbage. Similarly, maximum k-value (0.0753) was recorded at pupal stage on Indian mustard and minimum (0.0150) at pre-pupal stage on cabbage. On the other hand, survival fraction was recorded highest (0.97) at pre-pupal stage on cabbage and lowest (0.84) at pupal stage on Indian mustard. The life-table parameters revealed that cabbage is the most preferred food of P. brassicae than other Cole Crops.

  • Postemergence Herbicide Weed Control in Cole Crops Study

    Weed control ratings at 3 weeks after treatment (WAT) showed that knotweed (Polvgonum argyroColeon) and yellow sweetclover (Melilotus officinalis) were not controlled by oxyfluorfen (Goal®), pyridate (Lentagran ®), clopyralid (Stinger®), sulfentrazone (FMC), or carfentrazone (FMC). Carfentrazone at 0.50 lb AI /A gave good control ( >89 %) of London rocket (Sisvmbrium irio) and sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus). A lower rate at 0.125 lb AUA provided acceptable control (85 %). Carfentrazone at 0.50 lb AUA caused severe broccoli and cabbage injury and crop stand reduction. Sulfentrazone at 0.50 lb AI/A gave nearly acceptable control of knotweed, London rocket, and sowthistle. Cabbage was severely injured and broccoli appeared to be more tolerant and injury was marginally acceptable (15 %). Stinger and Goal gave nearly acceptable control of sowthistle. Goal at 0.094 lb AI /A gave 80% control of London rocket. Goal caused marginally acceptable injury (12 to 17 %) and Stinger caused minimal crop injury. Goal appears to be ineffective against weeds at less than 0.094 lb AI /A and crop safety is very marginal. Lentagran was relatively safe on broccoli and cabbage but did not control the existing weed spectrum. Introduction Currently, there is no effective and safe postemergence (POST) herbicide available for Cole crop production areas in the desert southwest. Broadleaved weeds, especially, are difficult to control and the mustard weeds are nearly impossible to control in the Cole Crops. Preemergence (PREE) herbicides supplemented by cultivations and hand -hoeing reduce most of the major weed infestations. Goal is labelled for use in transplanted Cole Crops and is phytotoxic when applied POST on Cole Crops. Lentagran is labelled for use in cabbage but has a limited weed spectrum which it controls. Stinger has previously demonstrated safety on Cole Crops but the weed spectrum appears to be limited. Sulfentrazone and carfentrazone are newly introduced herbicides that are being investigated for safety in several Crops. These field tests were conducted to evaluate and determine weed control efficacy and crop safety of POST applied herbicides for potential use in Cole Crops. Materials and Methods Two small plot field tests were conducted at the University of Arizona Maricopa Agricultural Center, Maricopa, AZ. The land was prepared per typical cultural practices and broccoli (cv. Captain) and cabbage (cv. Headstart) were planted on 40 -inch beds with two seedlines per bed in November 1996.     Abstract:

    It is very difficult to control winter annual broadleaved weeds in Coles Crops. Currently available herbicides do not provide broadspectrum weed control and hand hoeing is always the last option to ensure weed free fields for harvest. In continuing the effort to identify alternative herbicides for potential use in Cole Crops in the desert, three herbicides that indicated potential use in cruciferous Crops in other studies were evaluated. Clomazone (Command ®) and isoxaben (Gallery®) had exhibited tolerance by other crop species related to the Cole Crops. Napropamide (Devrinol ®) is commonly used in the production areas of coastal California.

  • Characterization of Fusarium Yellows Resistance in Collard.

    ABSTRACT The yellows disease of Cole Crops, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans, can be very damaging to collard. Growers in the southeastern United States frequently produce collard in hot, summer months when conditions for yellows development are favorable, and thus, incidence of this disease is increasing. A collection of essentially all U.S. commercial cultivars of collard, various landraces of collard, and other representative Cole Crops was evaluated for response to artificial inoculation with F. oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans under controlled-temperature conditions. In addition, the same collection was evaluated following transplanting for response to naturally infested soil in the field during summer 1997 and 1998. In all trials, genotype had the most significant effect on percentage of diseased plants, and genotype responses ranged from resistant (0 to 20% diseased) to susceptible (61 to 100% diseased).     The effect of different host plants including cabbage, cauliflower, mustard, radish, and broccoli on biological parameters of Pieris brassicae (L.) was studied in the laboratory at 28°C, 65 ± 5% RH and 12L:12D photoperiod. Duration of each life stage, longevity, the intrinsic rate of natural increase ( r _m), net reproductive rate ( R _0), mean generation time ( T ), doubling time (DT), and finite rate of increase (λ) of the cabbage white butterfly on the different Cole Crops were estimated. Differences in fertility life table parameters of the P. brassicae among host plants were analyzed using pseudo-values, which were produced by Jackknife re-sampling. The results indicating that cabbage might be the most suitable food for P. brassicae due to the shorter development time (16 days), longer adult longevity (12 and 9 days for female and male, respectively), higher fecundity (281 eggs/female), higher intrinsic rate of natural increase (0.1156 females/female/day), lower doubling time (6.00), lower larval mortality (70.33%), and higher yield of adult (30%). Therefore, it can be concluded from the present study that P. brassicae prefers cabbage for fast and healthy development with low larval mortality and highest number of adult yield than other Cole Crops.

    The effect of different Cole Crops was studied on biological parameters of Pieris brassicae (L.) in the laboratory at 28 °C, 65% RH, and 12L:12D photoperiod. The results indicated that host plants significantly affected the life history, i.e. survival of developmental stages, oviposition period, and sex ratio of P. brassicae. Comparative study on different host plant revealed that P. brassicae required a maximum of 40 days to complete generation on cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli. The survivorship and expectation of life declined gradually with the advancement of age; the life expectancy of newly deposited eggs was 23.96 days while it was 8.12 days at the time of adult emergence on cabbage. However, the fluctuations of mortality parameter were seen on all the Cole Crops. On cabbage, 100% hatching of eggs with low larval mortality were noticed. The highest net reproductive rate (R0) occurred on cauliflower, i.e. 27.1 followed by cabbage 24.89, females per female per generation. Intrinsic rate of increase (rm), was found to be highest (0.09558954) on cauliflower followed by broccoli and cabbage, 0.078886 and 0.077551 females per female per day, respectively. The smallest rm (0.059469 females per female per day) occurred on radish which shows that P. brassicae did not perform well on radish. In addition, P. brassicae may double in 7.2 days on cauliflower, 8.7 days on broccoli, and 8.9 days on cabbage. The sex ratio was computed as 1.5:1, female:male, respectively on cabbage.
