  • Commercial Broadcasting and local content cultural quotas advertising and public stations
    The Economic Journal, 2006
    Co-Authors: Martin Richardson
    Abstract:

This article considers two radio stations choosing combinations of local and international content to broadcast to consumers with preferences over those combinations. Station revenue derives from sales of advertising time, the demand for which depends negatively on its price and positively on the station's market share and consumers get disutility from advertising. This article derives the laissez-faire solution to this model and considers the consequences of a local content quota, an advertising cap and a non-Commercial public station for Broadcasting diversity and welfare with and without an externality attached to local content.

  • attitudes toward illegal immigration and exposure to public service and Commercial Broadcasting in france norway and the united states
    International Journal of Communication, 2015
    Co-Authors: Audun Beyer, Jorg Matthes
    Abstract:

This article investigates the relationship among political ideological orientations, exposure to news from public service and Commercial broadcasters, and attitudes toward illegal immigration. Based on a comparative data set of a survey administered simultaneously in the United States, France, and Norway, we hypothesize that Commercial news Broadcasting drives stricter attitudes toward illegal immigration than public service Broadcasting does. The findings suggest that political orientation is the strongest predictor of negative attitudes toward illegal immigration in all three countries. In addition, we find that exposure to Commercial news Broadcasting is positively related to negative attitudes toward illegal immigration in the United States, France, and Norway. Public service Broadcasting, in contrast, leads to more positive attitudes toward illegal immigration in the United States but not in France and Norway. The implications for future research are discussed.

    'Coimbra University Press', 2021
    Co-Authors: Roque De Freitas, marco
    Abstract:

Rádio Clube de Moçambique was a private Broadcasting company based in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) that expanded thoroughly after World War II, becoming one of the most important Commercial Broadcasting companies in Africa. Building on the analysis of magazines, financial reports, audio sources and interviews, this article intends to explore the history of RCM from its establishment in 1932, until the coup of State in April 1974. Following on concepts “radio-colonization” and “sonorous capitalism”, this article will explore the instrumentalization of radio Broadcasting systems for political and propaganda purposes, taking into account the economic, material and cultural dimensions of this institution, including the analysis of its programs.publishersversionpublishe
